    what have the proud boys ever done to warrant being called scum?  Is it the Fred Perry shirts?  Are bad whites always to be feared and marginalized if they dare to form a social organization?

    Do people have a constitutional right to have a police department that protects them from violence and criminals?  Would be great for the DOJ to push that idea in the federal court system.  Have the mayor of Portland hauled before a federal grand jury and force him to explain why Antifa and BLM are allowed to block traffic, damage cars and beat motorists.

    I really don’t know what the federal role there is in overseeing the execution of state government functions by state officials. I suspect there isn’t much of one, save in the case of a state infringing on constitutional rights or breaking federal law.

    It’s a tricky problem. Who amongst the framers could have imagined a governor or civic leader acting on the belief that the presence of an uncontested insurrectionist mob in their jurisdiction would be a political boon for them?

    John Podhoretz is correct about conventions.  I’ve been to two national conventions.  They are a week long series of parties with great food, drink and venues.  In the breaks between parties you go to the arena and be the studio audience with lots of yelling and screaming and other goofiness.  What’s not to like?

    14th amendment, equal protection clause: No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

    Portland is declining to enforce the law when the violators are BLM or Antifa thugs. DOJ should convene a grand jury in Portland to determine if any person within its jurisdiction is being denied the equal protection of the laws.

    I think there is another intended audience for the John Kasich pitch: Democrats who are afraid of the Commies in their midst. No Democrat could possibly be allowed to criticize AOC and the like on such a national stage, at this moment. Bring in the oppo squish and let him say that Joe ain’t gonna go all Comintern on ya.
