The discussion of extradition is woefully ill-informed. State Governors are directly involved in extraditions.
I think the group has overthought the matter with respect to other candidates’ positions. It seems reasonably clear that Trump is being railroaded for political reasons in connection with the charges related to the Stormy Daniels payments. To say so is to state the obvious and can be defended to independent voters. Paying a porn star hush money is bad, but not a crime. Other DAs and the US Justice Department looked at this issue, and decided not to prosecute. Having said that, we don’t want a president who pays porn stars and does the other non-criminal things he does. Banana Republics put the political opposition in jail on made up (creative) charges. The United States needs to be more judicious.
This case does not disqualify Trump because it is a criminal indictment, the underlying facts along with a host of other actions disqualify him for reasons the group has discussed many times.
Trump’s “felon status” if in fact, he becomes a convicted felon would not disqualify him from the Presidency. Eugene V. Debbs, The Socialist Party’s candidate for the Presidency in 1920, was incarcerated in an Atlanta prison under the terms of the Sedition Act(1918)during his run with 900,000 people voting for him.
The NTer wish list does not a disqualification make. This has also been discussed many times.
Is there any measurable public good achieved in indicting and prosecuting Trump?
Should a DA be breaking legal ground in a white collar case against a political figure of the opposing party?
We don’t know exactly what the charges are, but if they relate to a NDA, are such offenses regularly brought to court?
I think if the answer to any of those questions is “no”, then its a purely political prosecution. Republicans are right to object political prosecutions, and Democrats would be wise reconsider celebrating.
I think its wrong to assume Trump is stuck on 71M votes. Biden now has an otherworldly awful record now.
