The annual Conservative Political Action Conference had its share of controversies this year, as it usually does. In the context of a maturing Trump era, however, they merit renewed scrutiny. What does this conference and say about the movement it seeks to represent? The COMMENTARY podcast’s hosts break it down. Also, new information about how the Broward County Sheriff’s Office failed its constituents. Does that mean the gun control debate is off track?

Granted I was listening with half an ear at work, but the moment Noah started to tsk-tsk Sohrab, the gibberish quotient went way up.  It wasn’t that, as I often think, Noah was talking gibberish.   Noah and John were not clear about things like pronouns and quotation marks, so I found it hard to tell when they were speaking for themselves and when they were improvising a dialogue between Lacanians, Foulcauldians, and Trumpkins.

I must admit I rarely listen all the way through Commentary podcasts as the anti Trump vitriol is just too much to take and until now, have not even bothered to comment on this podcast site. In this particular podcast, however, I was so incensed by the droll snide comments related to CPAC attendees jeers against the democrat who spoke that I felt it necessary to set the record straight.

I don’t know if any of Commentary’s editors actually were present for this panel discussion, or just watched video clips. For the sake of argument and the video they saw of the jeering, let’s just take it as truth that there was jeering. However, before blaming all of CPAC for this bad behavior, it would have been better for you to first read the op-ed piece in the WSJ of the liberal who attended CPAC (“A Hillary Staffer Goes to CPAC” by Annafi Wahed). Having been to CPAC conferences in the past, this was more my experience than the one you saw.

I also take issue about your commentary of how unwelcoming Republicans are to new immigrants becoming citizens. Instead of the emotionality of seeing your friends becoming citizens, have you participated, as I have as a member of the local Republican Party club, to welcome these new citizens as they leave the ceremony with a smile, handshake, welcome greeting, and a new voter registration package?  Get out of New York City more often and see this nation at work!  Even those of us conservatives who live in California have a more tolerant view of the people than you appear to have. Get off that high horse of yours and quit with the all too easy platitudes of anti-Trumpism.
