Heather Mac Donald joins Seth Barron to discuss homelessness on the streets of San Francisco and the city’s wrongheaded attempts to solve the problem.
“San Francisco has conducted a real-life experiment in what happens when a society stops enforcing bourgeois norms of behavior,” writes Mac Donald in City Journal. For nearly three decades, the Bay Area has been a magnet for the homeless. Now the situation is growing dire, as residents and visitors experience near-daily contact with mentally disturbed persons.
Mac Donald’s essay, “San Francisco, Hostage to the Homeless,” appears in City Journal’s Autumn 2019 issue; an adapted version was published in the Wall Street Journal.

Its one of those things: do I like this podcast because its very informative, etc, or do I not like it because its so dam depressing? Heather MacDonald is, as usual, great to listen to. Currently my brother and sister-in-law (who is undergoing some intense medical treatment) are sitting in their house in California with no electricity and no idea when it may come back on. I can’t believe there is not rioting in the streets in California but then half the state probably thinks any electricity at all is an improvement; 20% are not affected because they have generators or their electricity is not turned off; and the rest are trying to figure out to leave. Am I supposed to seriously believe that they’ve turned off the electricity at N Pelosi’s winery or there are homeless people sleeping among the vines??
