It’s like Russiagate all over again, this time with the Post Office. The news is filled with reports of President Trump’s “assault” on the U.S. Postal Service. The president, Democrats say, is deliberately slowing mail delivery and crippling the Postal Service so that it cannot handle an anticipated flood of voting by mail in the presidential election. Former President Barack Obama says Trump is trying to “kneecap” the Postal Service to suppress the vote. Speaker Nancy Pelosi says the president is trying to “sabotage” the Post Office. The only problem: It’s just not true. Herewith, a commonsense explanation of what’s going on.

Several of my close relatives worked their entire careers at the Postal Service, and I have a lot of respect for the whole operation. But they can have some rather unique… issues… that might seem incredible if you don’t see them for yourself.

For example, one place I lived at, had a carrier (person delivering the mail each day) who had gotten a DUI with their personal vehicle, and could not drive the mail delivery vehicle. But due to union rules etc, she couldn’t be moved to a different position. So for at least several months, another person just drove her around on her route. Two people to do one job.

In another situation, an outgoing-mail box was positioned within the required height level, but the person who worked that route was too short to reach it. They cannot be required to use a step-stool or something, so the outgoing mail was simply not collected. Eventually, people noticed that their bill payments etc, were not being received. But all they could do was start taking their outgoing mail to another location that the carrier could reach without assistance, or a location that was on a different carrier’s route.

Indeed, I believe it’s still the official rule that outgoing mail is not REQUIRED to be collected by ANY carrier, except for those specific street boxes that are ONLY for outgoing mail. And those might be picked up by entirely different people anyway.

Thanks for the insight. No wonder the combo of union and government work is such a bad idea. Public Sector Unions delenda est.
