Afraid to be free, really!
The welfare state should be your family and non-governmental community.
And it used to be so. But it didn’t work perfectly. So, someone said, “Something’s got to be done!” And local government intervened because the people were horrified that someone slipped through the cracks.
But it didn’t work perfectly. So, someone said, “Something’s got to be done!” And state government intervened because the people were horrified that even more people slipped through the cracks.
But it didn’t work perfectly. So, someone said, “Something’s got to be done!” And Federal government intervened because the people were horrified that yet more people slipped through the cracks.
But it didn’t work perfectly. So, someone said, “Something’s got to be done!” And here we are today.
The real answer is to find that guy who keeps shouting, “Something’s got to be done!” and beat the snot out of him.
And that is termed, “Shifting the burden to the intervener,” by the way. Government intervenes and taxes the people then to do this new thing, and so the people say, “I’ve already paid for that. I don’t need to give to charity.” It’s now the job of “those people over there,” rather than the job of all of us.
