In this AEI Events Podcast, Rep. Adam Smith (D-WA) and AEI’s Leon Aron discuss the threat Vladimir Putin’s regime poses to Western countries and institutions, particularly the United States. Rep. Smith argues that the US must deter Russia by providing Ukraine with more military assistance and forward-deploying troops in the Baltic States.

Dr. Aron and Rep. Smith agree that Putin prolongs his regime by using a false historical narrative based on resentment toward perceived Western affronts to maintain a besieged “us versus them” mentality; it is crucial to deter Putin and turn his foreign policy into a source of embarrassment and defeat, rather than pride.

It’s a shame this congressman ruins a discussion that is mostly common sense by lobbing hand grenades of Democrat lunacy every few minutes. An example:

“I think it’s even more important that we find ways to get messages to the Russian people … Putin has managed to gain a monopoly on the media – and again, there are certain domestic U.S. analogies that are troubling that we can get into…

Such as, congressman? What politician controls the television news? Do enlighten me.

Obviously, Smith is implying that 1) the Trump administration controls Fox News and talk radio, and 2) the vast majority of Americans tune into both Fox News and talk radio and absorb their message like zombie-sponges.  This ignores the fact that virtually every major (and not-so-major) newspaper in this country has a severely Left-leaning, pro-Democrat slant; that both CNN and MSNBC are unabashedly Left-leaning and pro-Democrat; that the three major broadcast networks are Left-leaning and pro-Democrat; the government-funded broadcasters, PBS and NPR, are so far Left they would make Trotsky proud; and Hollywood is so far Left that the only difference between award shows like the Emmys and Oscars and the Democratic National Convention coverage is that the latter runs about an hour shorter.

No, no – it’s President Trump. He’s brainwashing 95% of America with Fox News.

I really would like to visit Representative Smith’s parallel universe to see what it’s like.  I bet it has a roaring economy and much less crime – but it’s so hard to find gender-neutral potties, boo hoo!

Haha, it took perseverance for me to finish this podcast. I’m not surprised he is so smug and snarky after realizing he’s been a politician since he was 23 years old.
