Love the chosen stone, although he would be one for Veteran’s Day rather than Memorial Day. He was too tough to die for his country.
My 9 year old is VERY impressed. As am I.
This incident is well recounted in Nathaniel Philbrick’s Bunker Hill. I recommend everything Philbrick has ever written.
Fortunately, this book seems to be available in every format from 8″ floppy on up.
That is amazing – truly amazing! When I lived in Boston, my sister who was visiting, my good friend Terese and I rented a canoe to go down the Sudbury River in either Concord or Lexington – I forget. There are monuments all over telling about how the local farmers and townspeople lay in wait in the woods to guard their territory from the British. Suddenly, out jumped 3 Minuteman in full period costume including bayonets to tell the story! He asked me where my shoes were – I said I’m getting ready to canoe!
Our country is full of so many heroes. I was doing some expenses this morning and I noted today, actually printed on an Ace Hardware receipt under the address and phone number it says: “You O Lord, are a shield about me….and the one who lifts my head.” Psalm 3:3.
I think that is the perfect message for today. Thank you all for your service and Happy Memorial Day!
Hmm . . . Perhaps I’ve had it wrong all this time. I thought Memorial Day was to honor all deceased persons who had served in the military, regardless of whether they had died in war or later, and that Veteran’s Day was for living veterans. Am I wrong?
Yes, I checked, and I see now that I have been mistaken. Oh well. I’ll continue to look for excuses to honor those who served bravely, and no doubt suffered much as a result. And all the more honor to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Well . . .
Up to you, but this is what the various days are supposed to mean.

I won’t complain if you find ways to do that every day of your life.
I can’t get the media in my parts to care at all for this story:

Great piece. It should be its own post.
Great book.
Left for dead – close enough! Besides, there was no uniform to take off.
To me he is a hero among all the others. Thanks, Ricochet
