For Whom the Monster Roars, The Monster Roars at Me
I have ridden out many many hurricanes here in South Florida. However, I have never seen anything like this one. The winds are more powerful and it’s larger than any other storm. Momentarily, its track is coming from the south but the path will go through the southernmost portion of Florida and then hit me directly.
I am on a barrier Island. I am in a very strongly constructed structure with no direct exposure to the wind. Still, the winds of this thing are so much greater than the average hurricane that I can’t take that for granted. Of course, it is storm surge that is the real threat to my position. Normally the angle of attack would minimize the storm surge. However, this thing is so big and powerful that anything is possible with it. It’s the perfect storm.
There is one flicker of light left. The storm might turn north early and go past us out at sea. If it continued its early turn it could even miss the continent completely and dissipate in the Atlantic. Increasingly, this is looking like a false hope. I hate retreating. As I have joked before “digression is the better part of valor.” This time I am forced to get to the point and admit that discretion will be the better part of valor in this. I have an offer of safe haven and I will take it. I still have the one last hope to ride it out but that will run out very shortly.
For whom the monster roars, the monster roars at me.
Hashem, Gd of Israel, turn back from Your flaring anger and relent from the evil meant for Your people.
You Who become favorable through compassion and become appeased through pleas. Become favorable and appeased to the poor generation, for there is no helper. Our Father, our King, be gracious with us and answer us, though we have no worthy deeds; treat us with charity and kindness, and save us.
Hashem, Gd of Israel, turn back from Your flaring anger and relent from the evil meant for Your people.

Texas Dunkirk
It surprised everyone. First, the Gulf effect happened in spades. A nothingburger of a storm got out over the Gulf and from only a tropical storm it popped up to a cat 2 hurricane. As it approached the Texas coast it made it to cat 3 and then a cat 4. This level of storm ripped up people on the coast completely and destroyed power lines across a very large area.
However, this was just Harvey’s opening gambit. Two freak high-pressure systems now took over and revealed Harvey’s truly diabolical nature. One high-pressure system hanging over central Texas stopped the forward progress of Harvey. The second hanging over the Gulf stopped Harvey from going back out to sea. Trapped on the Texas coast Harvey’s forward speed slowed to 2 mph. Having dumped 25″ of water on its initial attack, already causing massive flooding, now would for the next 3 days dump another 30″ of water on an already flooded area.
Tens of thousands of people are trapped. You can get a few miles from them on the interstate but then 5′ to 15′ of water stands between you and them. In desperation, the Governor requested anyone with a small boat who would be willing to volunteer to help in the rescue. As the sun was going down on Sunday people with tiny fishing boats were plucking people off of roofs. The waters were treacherous, filled with debris. They brought them back to the safe spot on the interstate. A newsman was covering from there. As he talked you could watch the people exhausted wet and sick being carried out of the boats. The brave boaters who had been at it all day long went back to get more.
The newsman asked a woman where she was from. She said the name of her housing complex and said that over 1,000 people were in her complex and very few had evacuated. They were still waiting to be rescued. Behind the newsman, a small trailer unloaded a swamp buggy. The owner had driven all night, 1,200 miles from Florida. The big prop cranked up and off he went immediately to get survivors. He had the fastest boat and probably would be able to get many people out. Unfortunately, there was only about an hour and half of daylight left. While we were watching, the rain had let up. Now a band of rain came through and they were all once again in a downpour.
It will be a wet, dark, cold night. It will rain all night. Hopefully, people will have hung onto a little food and fresh water. They may get hypothermia. They may come down with pneumonia. Tomorrow morning the rain will keep coming down, but the boats can go out again. There will be more boats. There are helicopters from the National Guard, Coast Guard, and Navy. The people will just have to hang on and wait for rescue. Many of their saviors were their own neighbors and many were from far away.
At a moment like this everyone can see what really matters. It is said that he who saves a single human life saves the entire world. Today and tomorrow and the next day and the next day, a whole lot of worlds will get saved.
Sorry Rich, You Got It Wrong

The Breitbart Presidency – Rich Lowry
It doesn’t take political skill or crisis-management ability to show largeness of heart. Future historians will marvel that one of the most damaging events in the early Trump administration came in a botched response to a neo-Nazi rally. Even Jake and Elwood Blues could have gotten this right.
Mr. Lowry is referring to a scene in the movie “Blues Brothers”. Let’s take a look at what he is referring to.
In this wonderfully comic movie scene, as the bluesmobile picks up speed and drives directly at the crowd of Nazis, all of the Nazis manage to jump off the bridge into the water to the approval of the crowd and almost everybody who saw the movie. This, of course, isn’t real life but just a movie. Events are scripted and acted the way we would want them to be. Nobody actually gets hurt but the Nazis are humiliated.
Unfortunately, real-life happened in Charlottesville, not a movie. What Rich and others need to ask themselves is what if the shoe was on the other foot, what if an Antifa protester had driven a car into the Nazis and something much more real would have happened than the scene in Blues Brothers. A car traveling only 30 mph closes upon someone on foot in very little time. Especially if one is distracted or can’t directly see the vehicle as in a demonstration or a crowded shopping area. The likelihood that multiple people would be unable to avoid the oncoming vehicle is very high. What if it was the Nazis that were run over. Would that be funny like in Blues Brothers? What if a Nazi was dead and 10 or 20 wounded. Would that be OK because they were Nazis?
We are stumbling towards anarchy in this country. Pulling down the statue of Robert E. Lee sounds harmless but where will it end. Who determines what will be acceptable and what won’t, a duly elected American Government or a Vigilante Army of political radicals looking to score a propaganda splash.
In light of what was really happening, Trump’s reaction was the proper reaction. He condemned all of the violent behavior. I hate Illinois Nazis too. In fact, I hate all Nazis and I’m glad to mention it. However, I don’t think you give up on the rule of law because a rag tag gang of idiots decide to call themselves Nazis and get a permit to march. It would be nice if everything that happens could follow a script so that what we want to happen always happens. Unfortunately, real-life isn’t that simple. Maybe we all ought to think it through a little more.

Perle’s of Wisdom from the “Prince of Darkness,” or Neocon Vindication Day
Jonah Goldberg, not your ordinary fire breathing war monger, has reached back in time and remembered a conversation involving the Neocon’s Neocon Richard Perle. Perle often referred to since that time as the “Prince of Darkness” is making some rock solid sense.
Perle of Wisdom on North Korea
Mr. Perle: No, I don’t think we need to launch a strike tomorrow, but I think unless you have decided that you will launch a strike before you will allow North Korea to become a significant nuclear power, and I think in practical terms, that means before you allow them to reprocess the fuel they now have into plutonium — once you make that decision, then I think it’s fine, sit down at the table, but make sure that your allies know that you’ve made that decision and that the North Koreans know that you’ve made that decision.
Mr. Wattenberg: So you agree with Paul and the rest of the panel that we ought to proceed with the negotiations?
Mr. Perle: Only after we make the decision that if the negotiations fail, we will do what the Israelis did and end the program in that way, because if you don’t make that decision first, there is a risk that you go on negotiating past the point at which they take irreversible action and become the nuclear power we’re trying to prevent them from becoming.
There has been way too much demonization of the Neocons. Most of it motivated by left-wing, politically correct foreign policy wishful thinking. We collectively decided to live in a foreign policy safe space blaming the Neocons for frightening us with all of their hardball talk. Now we are being rudely evicted from that safe space by reality in the form of a fat little murdering tyrant with a bad haircut and a robotic killer regime.
Put Richard Perle next to Kim Jong Un, and the Prince of Darkness starts to look like the Angel Gabriel.
Rationalization and Charlie Gard
Our ability to rationally evaluate and make choices upon our evaluation is what places us above the animals. Yet, our very rationality can sometimes work against us. We become too subtle and too arrogant. After our first clear ethical response, we start rationalizing to obtain a result that, however unethical, benefits our narrow interests. We can rationalize away the most basic human right. Because a few parents risk the health of their children, this serves as an excuse for a single-payer administrative state to remove all parental rights and make choices that are only appropriate for parents to make. After waiting 11 months for the child to die, now an immediate mercy killing is justified to save the face of the institution. Of course, we’ll rationalize this by talking about the best interests of the child determined by medical science, not emotion. Oh, what a brave new world.
Those who never accept an ethical view of life always assert an all-powerful state above the rights of individuals. They are a crafty enemy not to be underestimated.
Still, it is possible to overcome the enemy and return to the right path.
VP Mike Pence: ‘We Hope and Pray that Little Charlie Gard Gets Every Chance’
On Monday afternoon, High Court Judge Mr. Justice Francis, who made the initial High Court ruling in April, said the case would be listed for a full day Thursday. The judge explained a final decision may not come until Friday, meaning more delays to Charlie receiving treatment.
Chief Executive of Americans United for Life, Catherine Glenn-Foster, who is close to the Gard family, said on Sunday: “[Chris and Connie] are stressed as anyone would be in this situation, where their own parental rights are being stripped away by an institution that was hired to care for their son and instituted to care for the most vulnerable among us.
“That very institution hired to care for Charlie is trying to strip him of his rights and his parents of their rights to even just take him to get a second opinion.”

Post-Natal Abortion: Update
Recently I did two relevant posts to the case of Charlie Gard and his parents. The first was about the general subject of Death Panels and their relationship to Single-Payer Health Care. I called it Death and Power. It was mostly a response to the Democratic chorus in Congress screaming that the Republican health care plan was going to kill people. Although I wrote this post before the Charlie Gard affair became prominent in the news, I still think it is relevant background.
I wrote my “Post-Natal Abortion” specifically about Charlie Gard and his parents’ situation. Since that time a series of events have begun to change the playing field.
Trump Backs Fight to Save Baby Charlie Gard, Would Be ‘Delighted’ to ‘Help’
Pope Francis Reverses Vatican Judgment on Charlie Gard Case, Siding with Parents
U.S. Pro-life Leaders: ‘We Are All Charlie Gard’
All through these high-profile endorsements of Charlie’s case (even Cher threw her support to Charlie) the Great Ormond Street Hospital and the European Court of Human Rights remained intransigently fixed in their position. Charlie must die and soon. Yet, incredibly there is now a sign of movement. On Sky News:
Baby Charlie Gard: Great Ormond Street considers fresh evidence
Great Ormond Street Hospital has applied for a new court hearing on the Charlie Gard case “in light of claims relating to potential treatment”.
In a statement, the hospital said: “We have just met with Charlie’s parents to inform them of this decision and will continue to keep them fully appraised of the situation.
“Two international hospitals and their researchers have communicated to us as late as the last 24 hours that they have fresh evidence about their proposed experimental treatment.
“And we believe, in common with Charlie’s parents, it is right to explore this evidence.”
Just amazing! Stay tuned, don’t touch that dial.
Post-Natal Abortion
I have been waiting for this. The left knows no morality but its blind faith that Socialism will “help” people. When you make a deal with the devil, it’s a lose-lose proposition. You corrupt yourself and any personal moral principles that you have, and then comes the big kick in the backside. Socialism doesn’t work. Now not only did you lose your own moral code, but the people you were going to help are hurt as Socialism destroys the valuable existing institutions.
An all-knowing, all-seeing, single-payer healthcare system with an all-powerful administrative state making the final judgment will now override all moral considerations and all rights of the individuals involved. They are helping people?! There will be no appeal and no way to sue the government.
Baby Charlie Ordered to Die by EU Court To Have Life Support Turned Off Friday
Once you are in this Orwellian world, your only hope is to put enough pressure on the government by media coverage to scare them assuming you can get the media’s attention to do it.

When Sarah Palin said that there would be death panels she was naive. A single-payer system is one big death panel.
I’m Out of Rehab
Good Day Ricochet,
Yesterday they decided I was strong enough to be released from rehab and I am back in my apartment. I can walk without the walker. I have good strength in legs and arms and a reasonable amount of balance. My endurance ability was what was in major question. The first week of rehab was depressing because I didn’t feel like my endurance was improving. Suddenly in the second week I began to come on. I could walk farther and still not be tired. I soon abandoned my walker and got my sea legs back.
I am still wearing the life vest. I must pass my cardiologist’s standards on heart function before he will let me free of the vest. I am confident I can do it now.
Thanks so much for all of your good wishes and prayers.

Jim
Jonah Remains Unconvinced
Author’s note: This post was written one week ago but not published until today.
Recently, I found myself in the odd position of mildly criticizing one of our own. Jonah Goldberg is bright, engaging, and really more fun to read than almost anyone else on the right. However, I am incapable of giving a blanket endorsement to anybody. I don’t think Jonah would fault me. In fact, that is why he is so tough on Trump. I made it clear in my recent post, “Jonah Has Tweet Envy,” that I wasn’t demanding he cease criticism of Trump or was I questioning his loyalty to conservatism. I think the way I phrased it was that his analysis was shallow and his style counter-productive. I predicted blowback from this criticism in the form of a battalion of straw men launched at me and “my kind.” In Jonah’s defense, he did nothing like that. Instead, he seemed to be responding with an interesting new proposition of his own that clarified why he sees Trump in an extremely negative light.
When conservatives said “Let Reagan be Reagan,” they were referring to a core philosophy that Reagan had developed over decades of study and political combat. When people said “Let Trump be Trump,” they meant let Trump’s id run free. The former was about staying true to an ideology, the latter about giving free rein to a glandular style that refused to be locked into a doctrine or even notions of consistency. That’s why saying “Let Trump be Trump” is almost literally the opposite of saying “Let Reagan be Reagan.”
Although I never used the analogy or the phrases of “Let Reagan be Reagan” and “Let Trump be Trump,” it is certainly a reasonable response to my piece. The proposition that, “’Let Trump be Trump’ is almost literally the opposite of saying ‘Let Reagan be Reagan,’” should require a response from me. Here goes.
The idea that Ronald Reagan was seen in a glowing conservative light when he was elected in 1980 is what I would call 20/20 hindsight. We know now more than 35 years later how groundbreaking and successful Reagan’s presidency was. However, in 1980 this was anything but obvious. Remember, the difference that got Reagan elected was the Reagan Democrats voting for him. I was one of them. Being of a consistent philosophical bent (what Jonah thinks of as all important) I first changed my registration in 1980 and Reagan was the first Republican I voted for.
That was the easy part. My parents had evidenced their complete disdain as they couldn’t believe anybody could vote for “a B-movie actor for president.” I didn’t have the heart to tell them that to me he wasn’t a B-movie actor. The B movies were eliminated by television in the 1950s. I would come home from elementary school and turn the TV on in the late 1950s. My two favorites were “The Lone Ranger” and “Death Valley Days.” On “Death Valley Days,” a former B-movie actor had taken over as the announcer. He wore his cowboy hat jauntily to one side and was really pretty good at his job. You see Jonah, in 1980 I was voting to make the announcer from “Death Valley Days” the President of the United States. Better not to mention this to Mom and Dad.
The real reason for my voting for Reagan can be summed up in two words: Jimmy Carter. Carter’s insane obsession with the environment which resulted in the destruction of an already soft American economy was just stupid. His capacity to imagine Communism as a positive force in the world was frightening. He was the first American President to undermine the State of Israel.
Understanding all of this at a philosophical level and knowing from my very recent experience at university that these attitudes were endemic to the left and would be endemic from now on in the Democratic party, I made my decision to make a clean break. Ronald Reagan was not a plus. He was, in fact, an extreme negative. First, there was the seriousness issue. I really did think of him as the announcer from “Death Valley Days.” However, watching the industrial heartland of America being wrecked because those who were its assumed defenders had been seduced by a hopeless ideology was way too painful for me to ignore. The Carter Administration needed to end before it did any more damage. I closed my eyes and voted Republican for the first time. Then Reagan won.
I had no idea what to expect. The next thing I know, Edward Teller was on television describing “Star Wars.” If Reagan was a bad joke to my parents, Edward Teller was Satan himself. (The Satan in Judaism is not exactly Christianity’s Satan. Close, but not exactly.) I face-palmed and cried, “What have I done?” As if to answer this very question the Soviet Union collapsed under the pressure of Reagan and Star Wars. Western Civilization moved upward and into the light. After that, I didn’t worry so much. I knew that it wasn’t just that the Democrats were wrong but that much of conservatism was right.
Thus, for this Reagan Democrat, Ronald Reagan represented anything but a “core philosophy that Reagan had developed over decades of study and political combat.” He was a blind gamble to get rid of the Carter insanity. After the fact, I realized that there was a good reason to be conservative and as idiosyncratic as Reagan was, he got the job done. All’s well that ends well.
Now, what of Trump? Jonah is right that Trump is a very different case than Reagan. However, Obama-Hillary is a very different case than Carter. Carter represented the new left-wing ideology. Obsessive about the environment, blind to the threat by Marxism, and incapable of understanding the economy enough to break the malaise.
Obama-Hillary represented something even worse. Oh, of course, they doubled down on the left-wing ideology. However, it was the identity politics, victim-mongering, and deconstructionism that was new. If Jimmy Carter said something absurd you could debate him and win. If Obama-Hillary said something absurd and you made that point in a debate, you were a racist or a sexist. Obama-Hillary had perfected playing the race and gender cards to a science. A fawning, brainless, spineless media ensured that this fuzzy act could be maintained against all odds ad infinitum. Thus a clearly defined ideology became useless in attacking this bizarre cult-like gang of idiots who now covered Washington DC like some sort of bleach-resistant fungus.
In short, I don’t think even Reagan could have defeated Obama-Hillary and the transgendered, victim-mongering, sexual-schizophrenic Democrat loonies. Little did anyone, least of all me, know that there was a strange orange-haired being in the universe that had the odd characteristic of killing the fungus that was growing all over Washington DC. His very presence seemed to damage the up until then unstoppable fungal growth. Jonah, rather than continue to wildly rip the strange orange creature that neither you nor I fully understand, we should give thanks to a beneficent G-d who has heard our prayers and delivered us from the scourge of Obama-Hillary. Some things are just beyond our ability to predict or control.
Let Trump be Trump and let the fungus among us continue to die.
Good Shabbos.
No. 1 Played Woodward. No. 2 Is Woodward. Will Reality Please Stand Up?
Bob Woodward is a real person. He was central to the Watergate investigation that brought Richard Nixon down. Robert Redford is an actor who played Woodward in a movie about Watergate. Mr. Woodward is still very much alive and is an associate editor at the Washington Post. Incredibly, the new swirling controversy around allegations of Trump’s team and Russia have prompted the Washington Post to give a long column space to the actor who played Woodward and not Woodward himself. Redford responded by writing an essay full of vague innuendo which fueled the narrative about Trump and Russia. It is doubtful that the real Woodward would have written such a piece.
Meanwhile, a story much more akin to the real Watergate has been brewing. Trump, the Trump Team, and who knows how many other innocent Americans, have been surveilled by what is called incidental surveillance. This means that they were not the subject for which the warrant for the surveillance was issued. They were accidentally surveilled. By law, the raw surveillance data can not be released and any report that refers to the surveillance must have the names redacted or as it is called in the trade “masked.” The illegal unmasking of an incidental surveillance is a federal felony with a huge 10-year jail sentence attached. We take a very dim view of using foreign espionage techniques on innocent American citizens. Susan Rice, Obama’s National Security Advisor, was requesting and gaining access to the incidental raw data on Trump and his team for over a year. At some point, some of this raw data was illegally leaked (unmasked) in conjunction with the running narrative about Trump and the Russians. The target of the illegal leak was forced to resign.
No other proof has been given of the Trump/Russia narrative. It is all innuendo repeated ad nauseam by the media. Meanwhile, there is clear documentation in possession of Nunes and the House Intelligence Committee that Rice was repeatedly gaining access to raw incidental surveillance data about Trump and his team. Now the old Watergate question has arisen: Did the President know about Rice’s actions and when did he know it? Charles Krauthammer is very unimpressed by the Democrats pretending the unmasking, a federal felony with a 10-year jail sentence, is not an issue.
A lot of the media are playing along with it, but it’s not going to work, because you have to ask yourself, “Where does Rhodes or Senator King get the divine authority to decide what’s the issue and what’s not the issue?” There are several issues. The Russian intervention is obviously an issue, and it’s simply cheap and I think it’s not credible to say this other story is just a smokescreen. Clearly there were some improprieties in the gathering of information about the Trump people. There probably was a felony committed in the leaking of the information about General Flynn. The story today about Susan Rice is, well, if she did order or allow herself to go in and unmask all these people, the question is this: Was it in pursuit of national-security interests (in which case it’s proper) or was it not (in which case it’s improper, possibly illegal)? That’s an important story because you don’t want to have — look, it could be the reverse four years or eight years from now — one party that controls the intelligence apparatus and gets the information using the information as a weapon against the other party. This is an issue that, until this election campaign, was one about privacy and the misuse of power that Democrats would’ve argued. Now they are pretending it is not an issue. It’s an issue. There are several. The idea that there can only be one at a time is simply silly and partisan.
If any of you remember a 1950s TV show entitled, “To Tell The Truth,” three people were put on stage and they all claimed to be a certain individual. They each had time to tell the panel their story. The panel was to judge who the real person was and who the two imposters were. At the climactic moment, the moderator would say, “Will the real Mr. so-and-so please stand up?” At this point, all I have to say is “Will the real Bob Woodward please stand up?” Bob, I think you owe us your honest evaluation. What will it be: vague innuendo and sketchy narrative or a paper trail that goes directly to White House with the purely partisan political motive as clear as day?
C’mon, Bob … just for old times sake.
Nunes: Walking Barefoot on Glass in Front of a Hostile Media
Victor Davis Hanson’s latest column for National Review is titled “Devin Nunes and Washington’s Riddle Wrapped in a Mystery inside an Enigma“:
The beleaguered Intelligence Committee chairman is the latest target in a partisan smear campaign. He must not step down. Devin Nunes (R., Calif.) will not step down from the chairmanship of the House Intelligence Committee. He is the new target in an already long line of those targeted by the media for forced resignations — Steven Bannon the purported anti-Semite, Sebastian Gorka, the alleged closet Nazi, Jeff Sessions the supposed Russian patsy, and now Devin Nunes, the purported partisan naïf. Nor should he resign — especially given the wider and bewildering landscape of the politicization and corruption of the intelligence community over the last months and the dangerous state in which we all find ourselves vi-à-vis the intelligence agencies and the transition of presidential power.
VDH has hit the target’s bullseye again. Devin Nunes made no mistakes. This is an incredibly dangerous high stakes game where the politicization and corruption of the intelligence community brought about by the previous administration must be stopped dead in its tracks. Nunes may be unorthodox but both his tactics and his purpose are right on target. A hallmark of democracy is the peaceful transition of power. A lame-duck administration used the intelligence community to damage the incoming administration from the other party with a vicious smear campaign. The intelligence gathering rules were changed so they could widely disseminate raw intelligence data which included incidental surveillance of the Trump transition team. Then one of the transition team members was illegally unmasked and the information leaked. As Trey Gowdy repeated a number of times to make sure that Comey understood, illegally unmasking someone who has been incidentally surveilled is a federal felony with a whopping 10-year jail sentence attached to it.
In America, we take a very dim view of using espionage surveillance techniques to smear innocent American citizens. Much less to smear an incoming Administration. From a @JamesMadison post today, “Putin’s Dilemma,” I gather that the Russian government does this kind of thing all the time. I think we need to understand what is at stake. The phony Democrat narrative is just smoke blown in everyone’s face. The real threat to America is to become like the Russians and that threat isn’t going to come from Putin or FSB but from BHO and his angry bitter lapdog minions in Congress and media who can’t for one minute let go of their partisan cabal and care for the national interest.
Given this bizarre house of mirrors, Nunes seems to have decided to bypass the usual intelligence channels and go instead directly to the press and the president. In this way, interested parties may examine for themselves the explosive information that was directed his way.
Let the Truth Decide
Now that news of these latest disclosures is in the public domain, their validity eventually will rise or fall on their own merits. I think the very point of Nunes’s public announcement was to warn that what has so far been leaked to news agencies is not necessarily the truth, and to prod reluctant and possibly politicized agencies to cooperate with the committee’s review — and thereby to get to the bottom of a strange and sad chapter in American history. He has likely succeeded, and we should expect lots of investigations about what was heretofore selectively and opportunistically leaked classified material.
Please read Dr. Hanson’s full article. You will be glad you did.
Mr. Juncker, I Have Only One Question
I’ll back Texas independence, EU’s Juncker warns Trump
“The newly elected US president was happy that the Brexit was taking place and has asked other countries to do the same,” European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker said. However, he warned, “if he goes on like that I am going to promote the independence of Ohio and Austin, Texas, in the United States of America.”
In February, Juncker said he was under the impression that the Trump administration did not know the European Union “in detail,” adding, “But in Europe, details matter.”
I’m very sure that details do matter. Of course, the EU is the greatest example of the Super-Administrative State. The Super-Administrative State simply adores details. They conflate every tiny issue into a myriad of complex detail. Relentlessly complex detail makes a bureaucrat feel safe in their unwarranted power. We have an American devotee who said: “We must pass the bill to find out what’s in it.” An incredible 2,600 pages of law was transformed into 90,000+ pages of regulation. With little surprise, the bill was and is one of the greatest disasters yet produced by the fans of bureaucracy.
If Mr. Juncker thinks Mr. Trump is unaware of the details of the EU, I think Mr. Juncker is incredibly unaware of the details of Texas or Ohio. He has no idea of the likely response to his comments by the average Texan and it would be very good for Mr. Juncker’s health and self-esteem if he never finds out.
Now that we have dealt with the details, I can ask Mr. Juncker my one question. “Mr. Juncker, when were you elected by the proper legal vote of the 500,000,000 citizens of the EU?” You see Mr. Juncker doesn’t think it is important for the Chief Executive of a Nation to be elected by its citizens. Mr. Trump and Theresa May have both been elected by the citizens of their countries. Both will be required to stand for re-election by the citizens of their countries. Perhaps Mr. Juncker should think long and hard about this before he criticizes the American President or the British Prime Minister again.
The Captain of the Nevada: Dec. 7, 1941

Author’s Note: I read “Day of Infamy” by Walter Lord when I was 11 years old. It is still the best first-hand account of the attack on Pearl Harbor. A great read you won’t be able to put down.
At 8 am on Sunday, Dec. 7, 1941, the 183 Japanese planes of the first attack wave descended on Pearl Harbor. Admiral Nagumo’s attack fleet was less than 100 miles from Pearl. Luckily the Enterprise, the huge American aircraft carrier, was at sea. Not so lucky was the fact that the American battleship fleet was anchored and inert, tied up in a neat row called Battleship Row in Pearl Harbor. The battleships were huge sitting targets. Even if someone had sounded an alarm when the planes were spotted on radar, it wouldn’t have made that much difference as it takes two hours for a battleship’s boilers to come up to full pressure so she can move properly. All of the battleships at Pearl had dead cold boilers that morning. Completely tied up at anchor, after coming up to full boiler pressure, it would have taken another 45 minutes with the help of multiple tugboats to get a battleship away from Battleship Row and moving.

It was Sunday morning and almost everyone was at Sunday morning services. However, to this fact and everything I stated in the preceding paragraph, there was one exception. The Battleship USS Nevada had about one-third of her crew and one officer and one quartermaster aboard. The boilers of the Nevada were at about half pressure. She was making repairs, even on Sunday morning.
The Japanese planes of the first attack wave descended without any warning whatsoever. Seeing the sitting ducks on Battleship Row, the pilots converged instantly for the attack on the American ships.
The Nevada was the last ship on Battleship Row in position 8. Ahead of her at anchor was the Battleship USS Arizona. In the first 15 minutes of the attack, a bomb struck the Arizona perfectly penetrating her forward deck armor and exploding her forward ammunition magazine. The entire ship detonated in a huge explosion. The explosion killed 1,117 of her crew of 1,400. Half the ship was gone and the other half was a burning inferno.
All of Pearl Harbor was mad confusion. People running everywhere trying to get to their posts, pinned down by strafing Japanese planes. On the Nevada, the highest ranking officer was Ensign Joseph Taussig, Jr. He was the youngest officer, just out of the Naval Academy and had only been on the Nevada a few days. Also aboard was Quartermaster Chief Robert Sedberry, a man with many years of experience. Ens. Taussig manned the forward anti-aircraft battery himself. A shell smashed his leg, it would later be amputated. Still conscious, he continued to command the anti-aircraft defense. Meanwhile, Sedberry and others made the decision to take the ship into action. They must swing the ship free from her berth without the aid of tugboats, without two hours to bring the ship to full steam, without a civilian harbor pilot, without the navigator, and without the captain. Sedberry manned the helm.
She got past the burning remains of the Arizona just barely. As the Nevada slowly pulled free of her anchorage and steamed down past Battleship Row wild screaming cheers were heard all over Pearl. There she was, the Nevada moving! She was heading for the harbor mouth. She was heading out to sea for the counter attack! As she got about dead center of Pearl Harbor, out of the sky came 171 Japanese planes, the second wave attack.
The Japanese pilots of the second wave were greeted by a riveting sight. Most of the American ships were in flames but a single American battleship was moving out to sea. They knew very well that this ship had 14-inch guns on board. These guns could fire accurately over 20 miles. This ship could do over 30 knots (about 35 miles per hour). In two hours at full speed, she would be in range of their attack fleet. A single 14-inch shell would pierce the unarmored deck of any of their aircraft carriers. One shot might easily sink a Japanese carrier.
The entire second wave descended on Nevada. It is interesting to note that it is not so easy to hit a moving target as it is to punch holes in a sitting duck. However, Nevada wasn’t moving that fast and there were 171 planes to get her. Soon Nevada was on fire from one end of the ship to the other. She had been torpedoed and was taking on water. Ens. Taussig, although severely wounded, continued anti-aircraft fire at the Japanese planes. Chief Quartermaster Sedberry had been radioed a final order. If the Nevada sunk in the harbor channel she would plug Pearl Harbor for a prolonged period of time. Most of the crew had already abandoned ship. The Quartermaster and a few men guided the huge ship towards Hospital Point just inside the harbor mouth to the east. There they beached the Nevada in the sand like a giant canoe. Still conscious, Taussig was carried off the ship.
What is significant about this? Why am I relating this story? Simply because human events, their outcomes and their significance, are so hard to predict. At first, you might think the Nevada‘s short but glorious cruise a total waste and insignificant. However, because she was moving when the second wave appeared, most of the Japanese planes wasted their bombs attacking her. If the Japanese pilots had instead found all of the American ships out of action, they would have immediately turned their attention to the rest of Pearl Harbor’s extensive military facilities. The dry docks most of all. Back in Tokyo, Admiral Yamamoto received the full report. He was furious about the second wave and its failure to bomb the dry docks. He said:
“I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve.”
Because of Nevada, most of Pearl remained intact and was fully operational in short order. With Pearl Harbor’s facilities, The American fleet quickly recovered. At the Battle of Coral Sea, the Japanese found themselves to be less than invincible and suffered major damage.

With the help of a brilliant American code breaker, The American fleet ambushed the Japanese fleet at Midway. This battle crushed the Japanese and broke the back of their fleet. Midway was measure for measure for Pearl Harbor. Nevada‘s short but heroic effort did more than just lift the spirits of the men fighting and dying at Pearl that day. She made it possible for the counter attack to take place.
One should always remember that G-d is in control of events. Sometimes we can foresee events and sometimes not. It is therefore important to serve in the moment both dutifully and creatively and leave the rest to G-d. This is why freedom is so important. Even a young ensign or an old quartermaster might make contributions that affect the outcome of the entire war. When men are free, they hold themselves to a higher standard than any tyrant can obtain from his lackeys. No matter how much power the tyrant holds, the free man will prove superior.
Authors Note: I first posted this in 2012. I made some small changes for a repost in 2013. No changes but a minor title change for 2014. No changes but a little grammatical polishing for 2015 and 2016. The photos of “Battleship Row” and “free and heading for the harbor mouth” were added in 2016.
Facebook Accused of Political Bias

First, let me say that I am a total supporter of the internet. It needs no changes. Let it continue to grow and thrive. However, one of my fundamental assumptions has always been that there is really no incentive for internet providers to be biased. Any such suggestion of real bias would immediately lose them a huge market share. Their own self-interest is in maintaining a completely unbiased mode of operation. Actually, this is the least expensive, least complex form of online operation so why not do it purely from a business standpoint?
We have reached the day that my fundamental assumption must be tested. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. The Social Justice Warrior environment is so mindlessly one-sided that it doesn’t realize that it is itself the threat to social justice. Brendan Eich, a very hard working, personally hands-on tech entrepreneur, believed that marriage was between one man and one woman. He quietly donated $1,000 to an organization that supported his point of view. He was outed by the SJWs as not being politically correct and driven from his own company.
In this insane environment, we shall now look at another high-tech phenomenon. Mark Zuckerberg is no technical genius. I don’t think he can write a line of code himself. He is, however, a marketing genius. He created a fabulous marketing scheme called Facebook. He gave people free access to their own easy-to-use personal website. He pitched keeping in social contact with others. By selling advertising on top of this model, Facebook took off and has made Zuckerberg hugely wealthy. With wealth has come fame, power, and influence.
This would all be fine because that is what America is all about. Unfortunately, absolute power does corrupt absolutely and Mr. Zuckerberg needs to be called to task. From many different sources, there have been complaints of full-scale content bias manipulations by Facebook. Zuckerberg blows it off and sticks to a story of total innocence. This has held back the tide of anger in the past, but no more. The Senate is investigating claims that Facebook censors conservative news.
One odious example of this censorship occurred last year. In the midst of knife-wielding terror attacks in Israel, Shurat HaDin – Israel Law Center received information that many of the terrorists were being recruited on Facebook. So they decided to do an experiment, placing two Facebook pages online simultaneously. One page was full of real hate speech against Palestinians. The second page used the exact same language as the first but with one change: “Israeli” was substituted for “Palestinian.” They immediately reported both pages to Facebook. Immediately, the page that had hate speech against Palestinians was taken down. The page that had hate speech against Israelis was left up with Facebook claiming that they couldn’t determine if it constituted hate speech. Shurat Hadin tried to contact Facebook and Zuckerberg directly but were given no hearing. The result was Lakin v. Facebook.
The Complaint was filed in response to a wave of terror attacks beginning in October 2015 by which Palestinians attacked people with knives, axes, screwdrivers, cars and Molotov cocktails for no reason other than a perception by the attacker that the victims are Jewish. Many of these attackers were motivated to commit their heinous crimes by incitement to murder and the glorification of violence against innocent civilians they read on Facebook.
Zuckerberg did not respond.
The Complaint alleges that Facebook is much more than neutral internet platform or a mere “publisher” of speech because its algorithms connect the terrorists to the inciters. Facebook actively assists the inciters to find people who are interested in acting on their hateful messages by offering friend, group and event suggestions and targeting advertising based on people’s online “likes” and internet browsing history. Additionally, Facebook often refuses to take down the inciting pages, claiming that they do not violate its “community standards.” Calling on people to commit crimes is not constitutionally protected speech and endangers the lives of Jews and Israelis. Shurat HaDin will pursue the claims against Facebook on behalf of its 20,0000 clients until Facebook makes it (known that it) will not allow itself to serve as a tool for terrorists to transmit their rabble rousing messages to their followers and that incitement to anti-Semitic violence will not be tolerated on its website.
G-d will be watching and all the money and fame in Silicon Valley will not excuse Zuckerberg’s conduct if he continues to ignore this.
I like the internet but not that much.
Too Big to Jail

HRC looked almost human as she relentlessly stumbled through hours of inept questioning except for Jim Jordan. However, the 15 effective minutes were lost by a blind MSM and a limp public.
The former Secretary of State is already guilty (smoking gun and all) of multiple felonies including breaking the espionage act to the tune of a ten-year jail sentence, not to mention her repeated perjuries before Congress. She and Bubba are obviously guilty of a massive multi-billion dollar extortion scam (Clinton Cash) which is the motive for her having the illegal private server in the first place.
Incredibly, we finally have an explanation for it all. She’s “Too Big To Jail!”
“She’s too big to jail,” said national security attorney Edward MacMahon Jr., who represented former CIA employee Jeffrey Sterling in 2011 in a leak case that led to an espionage prosecution and 3½-year prison term. He cited a pattern of light punishments for top government officials who have mishandled classified information while lower level whistle blowers such as Sterling have faced harsh prosecutions for revealing sensitive information to expose waste, fraud or abuse in government.
Yep, it’s so simple. Why didn’t I think of it. Sometimes you just need an expert to clear things up for you.
Pardon me for a minute, I need to go throw up.

The Case Against Obama: Why John Yoo is Wrong
John Yoo argues that Obama’s executive action on Iran does not violate the law:
Today, conservatives disagree with President Obama’s use of these constitutional reservoirs of power to reach for the mirage of a rapprochement with Iran. But those same powers have served presidents from Lincoln, who invoked broad executive power to fight the Civil War and free the slaves, to FDR, who brought the nation into the war against the Axis powers, to Truman and Reagan, who, respectively, oversaw the Cold War at its beginning and toward its end. The next president will need those powers again when he or she quickly turns policy toward Iran in the opposite direction.
In the next weeks, conservatives will have ample opportunity to persuade the American people against the Iran deal on its merits. Presidential candidates will explain the steps they will take to undo the damage that Obama has inflicted on our national security. But they will make a serious mistake if they seek the short-term political end of defeating the Iran deal by crippling the Presidency’s long-term powers to defend the nation.
In contrast, Andrew McCarthy argues, in the National Review, that Obama deserves impeachment for his deception over Iran:
The Constitution forbids providing aid and comfort to America’s enemies. And the Framers’ notion that a president would be punishable for deceiving Congress regarding the conduct of foreign affairs meant that lawmakers would be obliged to use their constitutional powers to protect the United States — not merely shriek on cable television as if they were powerless spectators.
Well?
John Yoo’s defense of presidential power has good historical precedent. Mr. Yoo proves himself not to be a sunshine patriot, but a man who believes in his country deeply. However, Mr. Yoo has entirely missed the central issue. It is not long-term presidential power that is at issue. It is the intentional deception of Congress to the end of providing aid and comfort to an American avowed enemy.
The Corker Bill was passed while the President was deceiving Congress about the nature and scope of the agreement that was to be crafted in Geneva. Even after the signing of the agreement, the so-called side deals have not been completely disclosed to Congress. These side deals contain absolutely critical elements that Congress would never have considered.
The extent of the deception is huge. The agreement in reality constrains Iran in almost no material way regarding nuclear weapons, and thus releases all sanctions upon Iran in exchange for nothing. The Iranian regime has been an avowed enemy of America since its inception. On a weekly basis, for 35 years, mass rallies have been held in which the phrase “Death to America” is screamed repeatedly. The signing of the agreement has not only brought no change in this behavior, but prompted both the chief negotiator and the Supreme Leader of Iran to reiterate their contempt for America and their willingness to do everything in their power to damage it.
In his deception about the nature of the negotiations with Iran, the President has shown both total contempt for the Constitutional authority of Congress and wilful, treasonous behavior in consort with an enemy of the United States of America. That is the issue.

Foreign Policy Black Comedy: The Prince of Fools

You must give John Kerry credit. Who else could play the idiot with a straight face like he can. Just today — again — he knocked me to the floor with a comment so devoid of intelligence, so totally inane as to astound beyond all credence. Truly he is the Prince of Fools.
U.S. ‘disturbed’ by Iranian leader’s criticism after deal:
DUBAI, (Reuters) – The United States said on Tuesday it was very disturbed by anti-U.S. hostility voiced by Iran’s top leader after a nuclear deal, as both countries’ top diplomats sought to calm opposition to the accord from political hardliners at home.
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said a speech by Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on Saturday vowing to defy American policies in the region despite a deal with world powers over Tehran’s nuclear program was “very troubling.”
“I don’t know how to interpret it at this point in time, except to take it at face value, that that’s his policy,” he said in the interview with Saudi-owned Al Arabiya television.
“But I do know that often comments are made publicly and things can evolve that are different. If it is the policy, it’s very disturbing, it’s very troubling,” he added.
The man has just concluded a complete major treaty with the Iranians. He just ran to the U.N. so he could lift vitally important sanctions from Iran, giving them the green light for further aggression. He did this before Congress, as agreed, could have a say, and as if the Congressional right to ratify treaties, under the Constitution, were something that could be waved. Now, he’s “disturbed” that the hideous tyrannical regime with which he’s been negotiating for years is just what it appears: a lawless monster intent on the destruction of America, Israel, and any rival in the Middle East.
“If it is the policy, it’s very disturbing, it’s very troubling.” The Supreme Leader of an absolute theocratic dictatorship publicly announced this, to mass rallies, and Kerry says “If it is the policy.” He’s just given away the store at the U.N., and now, a few days later, he is very disturbed and troubled.
Absolutely amazing! This is for the Idiot Olympics. Kerry is in a class by himself.

What’s With Those Postulates?
As you may or may not know Euclid created what we know as geometry about 2,300 years ago. The first five statements, now called postulates, are to be accepted as self evident principles (a priori concepts). Incredibly after 2,300 years the five postulates are still very much presented exactly as they were when Euclid first divulged them.
There have been some additions. Additional dimensions (Euclid worked with just two), the real number line allowing for trigonometry, and non-Euclidian geometry. Non-Euclidian geometry sounds ominous but isn’t quite as radical as one might first expect. The first four postulates are kept exactly as before and the fifth postulate is “tweaked”. Immediately a whole plethora of non-Euclidian geometries are generated. One is reminded of that scene in “Raiders of the Lost Ark” when the bad archeologist lifts the top of the Ark of the Covenant and innumerable radical entities are suddenly released.
If you reflect on all this for a moment you realize just how strange this all is. 2,300 years and the same postulates!? One little tweak and a Pandora’s Box of non-Euclidian geometries are formed!? There is something contained in these postulates that is incredibly powerful and incredibly durable.
What if we now change our focus to Marriage. For about 1,000 years Marriage in the West has been defined strictly as Heterosexual Monogamy. There has been very little change and almost no challenge up until now! Yes, suddenly we have embarked on a radical redefinition of Marriage. For the moment it is limited to removing the Heterosexual requirement of the formula. Most who have anything like a sense of possibility see that it won’t be long before the Monogamous side of the formula is also removed.
One can almost feel it. Just as one tweaks the fifth postulate of Euclid’s geometry and multitudes of non-Euclidean geometries are formed so we will shortly see multitudes of new relationships all crying out for the title Marriage. Of course, non-Euclidean geometries only cause problems for mathematicians. As Marriage regulates the Family and the Family is the basic building block of society, the disruption caused by non-Euclidean Marriage, whoops sorry non-Heterosexual Monogamous Marriage, could be very much greater.
….hmmmmm
