A Washington Ricochetti Goes to Georgia
Civility, sadness, inspiration, and great barbeque in the ATL.
I work for a large trucking company that has terminals all over the US, and recently had the chance to work at our Atlanta terminal. I hadn’t been in Atlanta for 30 years or so, so I jumped at the chance to see what had changed and what our operation looked like.
One of the first things someone from the Pacific Northwest notices when going to the south is the ease of engagement with others. Up here, the Seattle “freeze-out” is legendary; that Scandinavian reserve permeates a lot of interactions. In Atlanta, people are just more open; on the elevator, in the restaurant, in the hotel lobby. I probably said “howdy” to more strangers while I was in Georgia for a week than I have in three months in Washington.

From the WSJ: “We strongly support NATO,” Mr. Trump said Monday in remarks at MacDill Air Force Base in Florida. “We only ask that all of the NATO members make their full and proper financial contributions to the NATO alliance, which many of them have not been doing.” A reasonable statement if ever I heard […]

Ramesh Ponnuru is reporting in NRO that Neil Gorsuch will be Trump’s nominee tonight. From what I have heard, he would be a worthy successor to Justice Scalia, one textualist replacing another. He’s 49, so he likely would be on the bench for a very long time. Those who know more about the judge, please enlighten us […]

It’s a long shot, sure, but if no candidate gets a majority in the Electoral College, and the House cannot muster a majority of state delegations by Inauguration Day behind one candidate, whomever the Senate chooses as Vice President would be elevated to the Presidency via the Succession act of 1947. http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2016/11/08/what-happens-if-the-electoral-college-is-tied/ Preview Open

[Disclaimer: This is going to get into some theological depth. It’s not another endless discussion of Trump vs. Hillary. At least it’s mostly not about that. You’ve been warned :).] Eric Metaxas is an author for whom I have a tremendous amount of respect. He not only writes and researches brilliantly, but he is an active […]

For those of you in Western Washington, KTTH (one of the conservative radio stations in town) is hosting a “Freedom Series” forum on Donald Trump and the future of the Republican Party this Sunday at 3pm at the Kirkland Performance Center. The panelists include Michael Medved, Todd Herman, Jack Armstrong & Joe Getty (from the […]

Full disclosure: I am on record as being NeverTrump/NeverHillary. Going into tonight’s debate, I wondered if tonight would remind me of the 2000 Veep debate, when I came out of it wishing that the two men debating were at the top of the ticket rather than in the #2 spot. Coming out of it, that […]

Sadly, one of my beloved Seahawks has joined the quarterback who shall not be named in not standing for the national anthem. In theory, this is about the treatment of visible minorities in America. But what is it really about? Get one’s name in the media; Keep Caucasians on the defensive by forcing them to […]

As a Seahawk fan, I’ve long thought that Colin Kaepernick (QB of the San Francisco 49ers) was a schmuck, albeit an athletically gifted schmuck. Now, I think we have an incident that might bring even 49er fans around. From ESPN.com: Preview Open

I used to respect Sarah Palin. She showed tremendous star power in 2008 at the convention, and she made a lot of the right enemies. Sadly, she has become like her political mentor, a certain D. Trump; egotistical, vindictive, ignorant and hypocritical. Most recent example? Preview Open

Ok, ok, guilty as charged of a provocative headline. But through his ignorance, the impact of his policies would have the same effect as hatred. Example: Robert Bryce’s excellent takedown of Sanders’ “thoughts” on fracking: Preview Open

If (when, one hopes) Trump fails to get a majority of the delegates required to secure the nomination, we would have an “open” convention (brokered implies Reince Priebus, Sheldon Adelson & the Koch brothers in a back room, throwing darts at a board & coming out to tell delegates “Vote for him!”). The nearest comparison I […]

While it was predictable that Christie would endorse Trump (similar political styles, Tri-state association, etc., backing a perceived winner, the hit done on Rubio that Trump explicitly acknowledged in his introduction), that endorsement, in both the timing and content raise some questions: (h/t Todd Herman from KTTH radio in Seattle) Chris Christie is a former […]

A Refreshing GOP Town Hall on CNN, of all Places
Last night’s town hall on CNN was for the most part a refreshing change from the vitriol we’ve seen. Each candidate was alone on the stage with Anderson Cooper for about 40 to 50 minutes, taking questions from Cooper and from the audience. You had the obligatory “so-and-so said this about you” moments, usually from Cooper, but the overall tone was much more relaxed and substantive than I expected, and much more positive.
Carson was far more at ease than on a debate stage, and you got another reminder of what a nice, genial guy he is. Really good answer on medicine and why a lot of doctors are getting out of it.

We’ve seen the “House of Cards” speculation; how about a little “The West Wing”? To quote Mr. Robinson, this will take a few moments to set up, but you’ll understand what I mean. The following is from season 5, “The Supremes”. Preview Open

He started his career with one of jazz’s greats, Ramsey Lewis, then struck out on his own, forming EWF with his brother Verdine. […]

Why, in a relatively long front page article, did the WSJ not once mention eyewitness reports that this madman was specifically targeting Christians? The New York Times, I would expect aggressive indifference to Christians’ martyrdom (and that is precisely what this was), but not the Wall Street Journal. http://www.wsj.com/articles/authorities-report-multiple-casualties-in-shooting-at-community-college-in-oregon-1443725327 Preview Open
