Gruesome and Effective
We live, let’s face it, in a world made up of weasel-words and euphemisms. All around us, there are softly-worded warnings and soothing messages — “contents may be hot” — and safety videos treating us like morons. (I mean, do we really need to see how the seatbelt works on an airplane?)
So it’s a refreshing change to see the safety videos now on display for the Los Angeles Metro. Here’s one that I particularly like:
I think she gets what’s coming to her.
The rest of them can be seen here.
Here’s another one I like a lot:
Jimmy learns an important lesson.
Am I a bad person because I enjoy these? I mean, yes, I know I’m a bad person. But am I a bad person because I enjoy these?

I love how after “Joan” gets turned into a puddle of goo, the other passenger just walks onto the train. That is so L.A.
I see your metro safety video and raise you forklift safety from Germany–as envisioned by horror filmmakers.
I’m posting a TinyURL to the YouTube instead of the direct YouTube link because I’m quite sure it’s graphic enough to violate the CoC. Consider yourself warned.

Yes, you are a bed person.
But that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy these…
In my Ohio high school driver’s ed class in the late 60s they showed us films like “Signal 30” and “Mechanized Death”. After you’ve seen “Red Asphalt” these dismembered stick figures are mild. I like the idea behind it though. You don’t get a 2nd chance to walk into a speeding train while listening to the Ricochet podcast.
You’re a good person, Rob — for enjoying these. I enjoyed them. I hate that they are lectures from some gummint organization. I’m sick of any such lectures or advice.
I’m not sure I want to ask you to elaborate … but I can’t resist. Are you saying it’s not the role of government to promote safety around government-owned infrastructure? Or what?
Plainly those trains are not safe spaces for
the JuliasJoan and Jimmie–the trains need to be slowed down. Drastically. And why are we touting all these racist “safety” messages? All of those behaving supposedly badly are black? What’s up with that?

You are a bad person for other reasons and the High Sparrow knows what they are. Or did know before he blew up, thank the seven gods.
Really uncanny – the one time I would expect gender-neutral names and situations would be with stick figures. But it’s ‘Joan’ looking at kitty pix and ‘Jimmy’ skateboarding. How quaint.
These are worse than the Red Cross safety poster!
The person on her phone is perfect. I’m surrounded by that every day.
As ever, the escalators on our local train service were out. As I walked up the stairs this morning, a woman in front of me was obviously in a hurry but was stuck behind two people climbing the stairs adjacent to one another, both with heads in their phones. She said “excuse me a few times” as she heard her train approaching but nothing….she finally pushed her way through, which angered the phone people.
Man I can’t wait to move into the mountains.
You beat me to it Misthiocracy!
Good point, but I can still be sick of mostly-unnecessary, condescending, smothering safety lectures that don’t assume responsibility or common sense on the part of “customers”.
You have to get up early in the morning to get up early in the morning.
You beat me to it, Rob.
The close-up of the sign shows a prohibition of food and drink. I can’t wait to see that video! I bet it’s epic.
You wuss. That was the fakest of fake blood. I’ve seen gorier bits on Saturday Night Live.
Yep. <grin>
Well, it’s a start.
Used to be, children learned those lessons at home, usually by the time they were about six.
My exemplars of the appalling things that happened to children who didn’t behave themselves and do as they were told came via Struwwelpeter, and Hillaire Belloc’s Cautionary Tales for Children.
No one worried that the stories were horrific and gory. Children were supposed to read about “George: Who played with a Dangerous Toy, and suffered a Catastrophe of considerable Dimensions,” and apply the lessons contained therein to their own lives.
Most of the time, it worked.
With me, anyway.
Am I the only one who thinks that the cop’s over-reaction caused Jimmy’s accident??
Then there was the woman reading a book while crossing the tracks. An AmTrack Express proved Darwin correct. (From Faces of Death series). So if I watch the entire series, does that make me evil ?
You may remember me from such safety films as “Lead Paint: Delicious But Deadly”, and “Lockerroom Towel Fight: The Blinding of Larry Driscoll”.
The destination cannot be reached until the journey is complete.

Storyboarding the new project:
It’s a beautiful day in Behaviorville and Joan is checking in on Ricochet.com
She’s busy telling her fellow members what she thinks of them.
Joan, this time your comments have really crossed the line!
THUD!
Uh, oh. Joan’s been warned for the last time.
Rob says Joan got what she deserved.
I happen to like this warning ad. Another Youtube, but I am linking it because it is very graphic. It is really over the top.
Note the final puff of smoke at the end.

Sure, sure, but I think that assumption was disproved long ago!
Also gruesome and effective….
I keep my ire-fire burning hot and ready.
EJ, do we, excuse me did we have a Joan?
