DNC Day Two Wrap Up

Well, that horrible thing we’ve been expecting for the past four years has finally happened. Yesterday, Hillary Clinton was officially nominated for President. Two hours into the agonizingly long roll call, Bernie Sanders moved “in the spirit of unity” to suspend the convention rules and nominate Hillary Clinton by acclamation. And so it was done. Some Sanders delegates walked out when this happened, but it wasn’t as dramatic as it seemed. It was only a couple dozen delegates out of thousands.

So, what about the speeches? Well, the primetime portion was hosted by Elizabeth Banks, whose jokes were hit or miss. The speakers included Eric Holder, Howard Dean, Chuck Schumer, and Madeleine Albright (who took an anti-Russian stance).

But, of course, the real star, who overshadowed the entire evening, was Bill Clinton (and he knew it). He had the prime 10:00 ET timeslot and used it gave a speech that started with how in 1971, “I met a girl.” He told the story of courting and marrying his wife, of Chelsea’s birth, bringing his daughter to college, and so on. And all along the way, he told the tale of Hillary’s many accomplishments.

Bill rambled on in his hoarse old-age voice for 42 minutes. It was folksy and funny and sweet … or it would be if we didn’t already know about the Clintons. But the problem is that we do. We’ve heard Bill spin these yarns for decades now and unfortunately for him, we know too much.
