So Now They’re Queer, Too

Bill deBlasio and Chirlane McCray are separating. From each other, that is, except they really aren’t. According to the interview they requested from the New York Times (who naturally and with alacrity responded to their summons), they will still be together, an undivorced but adulterous pair of sexegenarian empty-nesters dwelling as always in their Park Slope townhome. Bill will still be a straight white man and Chirlane will still be a black lesbian, and of course, they love each other as much as ever. And they will still be mindfully co-parenting their grown children. It’s just that they’ll be dating other people at the same time.

Why are Bill and Chirlane telling us this?

Since a member asked about the benefits of Quip, I figured it was okay to ask about another sponsor — Boll & Branch sheets. I have a 17 inch mattress on an adjustable bed. Does anyone have this set up? (Adjustable bed and thick mattress). I’ve been using Dream Fit sheets, which stay on beautifully […]

Having read about the Project Veritas undercover conversation with a Pfizer director, Dr. Jordan Trishtan-Walker, in which concerns were raised about the effects the mRNA product (it isn’t really a vaccine, right?) may be having on female fertility… And seeing this, in an article on the subject in American Greatness, Preview Open

Learned a New Word

Marambaia. It’s Portuguese, specifically Brazilian slang, for a sailor who cares little for the sea. Or for a sailor who is your boyfriend, possibly other girls’ boyfriend too, in any case definitely not taking you aboard his ship. You see him only on land; and maybe that’s where he should stay. I heard the word in a song recently, and was a little dismayed it was new to me. I should have known it already. This sort of stuff is in my line.

(Speaking of lines: I think most subscribers here have one, and it’s the right one for them. They are good fits. With a certain exception. I have no way of knowing for sure, of course, but I think Ricochet doctors doctor; and the nurses nurse; and the police police; the professors profess, the writers write; and the EMTs…emerge, swiftly and with good and welcome effect. And the engineers are the kings of engines and the librarians are the queens of libraries! But Ricochet lawyers…I have my doubts. Not about all of ’em. But some of ’em. Some of ’em, I sense, really lean on their secretarial staff. For everything.)

There’s nothing quite like a radical change in lifestyle, location, and vocation to bring out the podcaster in Ricochet’s Dave Carter.  After a year and a half’s hiatus, Dave is now safely and happily ensconced in Florida, on “The World’s Most Beautiful Beaches.”  As it turns out, the thing he most wanted to accomplish after getting settled in was setting up his in-home studio and firing up the microphone to talk with us.  And we’re glad he did!  Rob Long joins the fun, talking with Dave about the contrasts between New York City and Florida and pausing to counsel Dave on his unique sense of ebullient pessimism over the country’s trajectory. The conversation changes pace with Rob advising Dave on his new line of work in radio sales before the two discuss tentative plans regarding an upcoming Ricochet Meetup in New Orleans. The conversation concludes on a fun note, but not before Dave makes a shameless plug for his new internet radio station called The Tiger, Bayou Blues & Rock (which includes some notable and notably funny Christmas music for the holidays).

Finally, Ricochet’s Jenna Stocker calls in and Dave doesn’t miss the opportunity to solicit a comparison between the balmy weather in Florida and the single digit temps in Minneapolis where Jenna resides with her husband and delightful one year-old son.  The two discuss Jenna’s remarkable writings on her substack page, as well as The Federalist, Newsweek and elsewhere. Then Jenna turns the tables on our host and interviews Dave to find out exactly how his move to Florida went and what life is like now that he’s settled in (Hint: Dave’s attitude on the Christmas holidays has radically changed). You’ll want to listen in to learn more about this one.

My cat and I lead quiet lives, but more medical things happen to her than to me, so what usually piques my interest in such topics is something she underwent. Most recently, and as a condition for boarding, she needed a rabies shot. I have never needed one. As a condition for employment, or to […]

The ‘Big One’ and the Pacific Northwest

At odd intervals, I ponder the Cascadian Subduction Zone.

This is a 600-mile-long geological fault in the earth’s fractured crust that lies along the coast of the Pacific Northwest, extending from northern California all the way to Vancouver. The CSZ is a type of fault well-known for causing extraordinarily destructive, 9.0+  megathrust earthquakes. Because the fault lies under a pile of salty H2O, the quake itself will be followed by a huge, catastrophic tsunami. In emergency-prep circles, this one-two punch is known as “The Big One” and … oh yeah. It’s both inevitable and overdue.

Attention Democrat Voters!

The New York Times sent out an important signal Saturday regarding an imminent, significant change in the prescribed emotional orientation of the Left.

We will soon be directing y’all to shift the focus of your deepest, darkest, and most fervent loathing from the Donald to DeSantis.

Everyone has heard of Stalingrad but I had long been vague on why. The placename appears exactly once in Trout Fishing in America, as the final word in a chapter; Richard Brautigan seldom spoke pure nonsense but this was one of the times. I think in a collection of stories by Bruce Chatwin there was […]

Salena Zito is a champion of the common man in an uncommon time. She is one of the few reporters that has a finger on the pulse of the American electorate and saw the earthquake that was to be the 2016 election. In this, the fourth edition of No Dumb Questions, Ricochet Editor-in-chief Jon Gabriel sat down […]
