Sullivan and the Beast

We don’t traffic in gossip and conspiracy theories here at Ricochet, but I can’t be the only one who’s wondering why, exactly, Andrew Sullivan is packing up and moving to the Daily Beast. In honor of Andrew, I’m waiving the rules on gossip and conspiracy theories, just for this thread. If he takes exception, all he has to do to put the persistent rumors we’re about to start to rest is provide documentary evidence that we’re wrong. Can’t be fairer than that, can you?

Remind me never to cross you, Claire.  I did buy TINA in the end, honest!

Tina: “A rarity, he is willing to admit mistakes and change positions (sometimes radically) in the face of new evidence.” Absolutely brilliant. I wonder how she would describe Charles Johnson.

As for conspiracy theories: The Rand Corporation, in conjunction with the saucer people, under the supervision of the reverse vampires, are forcing [Andrew Sullivan] to go to [The Daily Beast] in a fiendish plot to eliminate the meal of dinner.

We’re through the looking glass, here, people…

How is it that a person of so little actual accomplishment attracts such attention?

Bjarni, we do not mock Charles Johnson on this site.  Certainly not in a Claire thread (no matter how wide she leaves the door).  That’ll get you booted into the Outer Darkness, where there is wailing and gnashing of teeth.

The metaphors in Sullivan’s life provide fodder for some of the snarkiest material ever. Fish in a barrel. Used to read him religiously, he is very erudite but became crazier and crazier as time went on and I imagine there were many like me who just couldn’t continue. Maybe when he started in on Jonah….that could have been the point of departure.

I’ll pass on the opportunity to make fun of someone who is smarter, more depraved, and vastly better educated.

The man cannot hold down a job to save his life. I did not make it as far as the Jonah stuff. He is the NASCAR of the columnist schtick, they watch to see who he is going to try to bump into the wall next. No yellow flags recognized there.

Just a few little things the Sullivan could clear up if he doesn’t mind:

    • Is it true he is the love child of Tina Fey and Tina Brown?
    • Is it true he is bearing the love child of Tina Fey and Tina Brown?
    • Is it true he has human ancestry? Strict proofs required.
    • How much did he pay Squeaky Fromme?
    • How much did he pay Sara Jane Moore?
    • Why did he instruct Muslim Brotherhood demonstrators to hide their identities from Western media?
    • Who bankrolled his 9/11 conspiracies?
    • Why did he come between Ling-Ling and Hsing-Hsing?
    • Is it true he is bearing Charlie Sheen’s love child?
    • Is it true Charle Sheen is bearing his love child? Remember, strict evidence, hormone levels, all that stuff. (I told Charlie to stay away from that stuff, but Rob told him he could handle it.)
    • Are those his real teeth?
    • If he was rocketed here from another planet, how can he be carrying Nancy Pelosi’s love child?
    • Is it true he is about to leave the Daily Beast for the View?
    • Is it true he is bearing a Barbara Walters, Whoopi Goldberg love child?

    All unanswered charges are true.

So Sullivan is leaving The Atlantic and going to The Daily Beast? That move will raise the average level of sanity in both places.

Apparently Conor Friedersdorf’s plan – sneaking into Sullivan’s office each night and moving every object on and around his desk a quarter-centimeter to the right – finally paid off.

It’s just so annoying that his main issue used to be National Security and Democracy, and then he suddenly changed his mind and said “you know what’s really vital to the future of the nation?  Gay marriage, that’s what.”

    Um, what?

Well, that and Sarah Palin’s fine washables.  That part I totally get.

Perhaps he keeps posting craziness about Sarah Palin in order to provoke Todd or Track to come visit him and give him a physical beating.  Sounds like something he’d treasure the memory of forever.

Wait – is Andy taking his entire Daily Dish wrecking crew (Conor, et al) over to the Daily Beast with him? Or does the Atlantic get to keep full custody of them?

His obsessive pursuit of the afterbirth should disqualify him for publication in any reputable outlet. He would be fine, though, penning his keen inquisitive insight in numerous conspiracy rags.

I’m not suggesting that he is a rabble rousing sycophant – I’m just asking questions.

Perhaps he is just biding his time for OJ to get out of jail. Then they could team up, and work together to find both the Real Killers  and the Placenta.

I found it very curious, considering Andrew wrote a scathing essay about Tina Brown a few years ago, ripping on her for having no principles and only caring about “what’s hot”. But that was back when he was comparatively sane. She must be throwing a ton of Barry Diller’s money at him and (I guess?) a column in her newly-revamped Newsweek. It just doesn’t seem like enough. Maybe he’s feeling the hate from the other Atlantic bloggers who got sick of his anti-Israel tirades.
