There are some memories we just put away. I’m not talking repressing trauma or avoiding thoughts of personal failure. I just mean that something was a regular, repetitive event in one’s life, that decades after you stop doing it, you just haven’t thought or reminisced about it in ages. Then something happens that brings the […]

There are only a handful of basic plot structures in fiction. One of them is “if this goes on.” So in that vein I will offer this “meditation” on the usurpation of power by a “gang of five” on the U.S. Supreme Court which has effectively made them five “philosopher kings” (see Plato’s Republic). They […]

How I Came to Be Ever-Skeptical of Elites First, some necessary background. People always told me I was smart, but maybe I wasn’t smart enough to believe it. Certainly I didn’t believe my mother, who I loved dearly but she wasn’t especially gifted in the brains department, and I was always skeptical of everything (but then, […]

John Adams predicted it! I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, […]

Admiration is not always the immediate reward for heroes. Those that choose to do what is right are at times on a very lonely and perilous path. The story of the Ulma family in war torn Poland is heartbreaking and tragic. Their story will move you to anger and some tears. Their story is not […]

If you are celebrating the birth of freedom, with flags flying, grills sizzling, watching a parade, waving your sparklers, or just quietly contemplating our fundamental liberties that we sometimes take for granted, please review these stories. It is a time of growing uneasiness and lest you think it’s just you, it’s not. Everything is […]

Britain’s Constitutional Crisis

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIWmIb0NnFk

The leading candidates to replace David Cameron as leader of the Conservative Party, Michael Gove and Theresa May, have both said they won’t trigger the Article 50 process until the end of the year. This has annoyed François Hollande, who responded much like a woman whose husband tells her he’s leaving her but refuses to move out. “The decision has been taken,” he said, “it cannot be delayed and it cannot be cancelled. Now they have to face the consequences.” A speedy Brexit, he said, “would avert all the uncertainties and instability, especially in the economic and financial domains. The faster it goes, the better it will be for them.”

What if the delegate revolt against trump succeeds. The delegates vote and trump receives an incredibly small margin of the delegate votes and instead Senator Jefferson Sessions of Alabama is voted in by the margin of 55% as the nominee. How would you feel? Is his nomination good for the party and with independents? Would […]

I recently read Elie Wiesel’s, Night and A Jew Today and blogged on each of them. If it’s OK, I’m linking those blog entries here, for anyone who’s interested.  I’m sure he’s at rest, but I’m sorry he’s gone. He leaves us too soon. We need his voice. I think of David French’s recent article in NRO […]

Dear Barack: Why Ahmed, But Not Hallel

On September 14, 2015, 14-year-old Ahmed Mohamed, was arrested at MacArthur High School in Irving, TX, for bringing an alleged fake bomb to school. He claimed that it was a pencil box filled with reassembled clock parts. His teacher thought it resembled a bomb and called the authorities. This led to his eventual suspension from his high school.

Enter the national mainstream media. The story quickly went viral, and led to another soul-searching discussion of how Islamophobic America is (“See Something, Say Something” be damned). #IStandWithAhmed became a worldwide trending hashtag, and tech companies flooded Ahmed with offers of jobs, internships, tours, and other gifts.

Alright, it’s an awful recording of karaoke at a sweltering outdoor bar at a formerly undisclosed location. I can make lots of excuses, and in fact I will in the comments. But it picks up in the second half. So imagine you are on your third of three rationed vodka Red Bulls of the night, […]
