Is there anyone 10 years ago that would have said that the current democratic nominee was way more in bed with Wall St than the republican? Is there anyone 10 years ago who would have predicted that the democratic candidate would be more inclined to neoconesque foreign intervention than the republican? Anyone would have predicted […]

What are you sensing around you as we land on the end of this month and spiral toward the end of the year, the end of the battle for the presidency? Seems everything is on fire . . . .  I apologize to Frost and appeal to your forbearance for my usurping and distorting his timeless powerful poem […]

It may seem odd that a religious institution would have a Just War Doctrine. The Catholic Church has been around for over 2,000 years. The papacy had been in existence for 900 years before there was a king of England. The Church has seen the rise and fall of empires. As an institution it has directly […]

Group Identity Convenience

Avik Roy has started a firestorm. (Spoiler alert: Take your blood pressure meds before listening to to this week’s podcast.) As noted by King Prawn, Roy has decided that the GOP is the worst thing that the Left claims it to be – racist.

“The fact is, today, the Republican coalition has inherited the people who opposed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 — the Southern Democrats who are now Republicans,” Roy says. “Conservatives and Republicans have not come to terms with that problem.”

A demonstration of night flying is not required or even invited for the private-pilot, airplane-single-engine-land checkride, but you must have logged a certain number of takeoffs and landings (presumably matched), as well as cross-country time at night before even taking the practical exam. I have not flown at night since those exercises. But I’d like […]

I’m currently a world away from the problems happening in Europe. Yet, I lived in Italy for a year, and have traveled to many places in Europe, so I’m still very interested in what’s happening there. An acquaintance of my mom has family visiting Germany. She provided an update regarding how their trip started, and […]

The Flagship podcast featured the race baiter, Avik Roy. Listening to him I was so fascinated to hear left wing memes about race come out of his mouth. Let’s admit it, NR has lost control of a huge chunk of their base and their ability to influence the GOP is in the toilet, too. I […]

The Cult and The Heresy

I love your hair!

She ran her hand through the longer part on top and pulled my head to the side, walking in a circle around me to inspect the back. Close inspection, passing, she moved to the other side, also passing, and as she stood there rubbing my head, nose buried, smelling the earthy citrus of my now-dried liquid pomade, her sister sat giggling on a mattress beside me, no longer needing to “translate,” now making faces at sour-skittles and daring me to try the yellow ones. Speech impaired by down’s syndrome is sometimes a nearly impossible barrier, but good hair is apparently the language universal.

A Response To Avik Roy

Avik Roy has been a bit of an intellectual force in the Conservative Movement for a few years. I first came across his name in the pages of National Review probably sometime in the aftermath of Barack Obama’s 2008 win. I did not read him as avidly as I did others, but I did not pass over his work as I do some of the others who are now writing for that magazine. Frankly, there is not anyone writing there that I “just have to read” for fear of missing something. So I am familiar with Roy.

Roy’s most prominent work, in my view, was teaming up with Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal during this year’s Republican primary to help craft a conservative answer to Obamacare. The premise was that it is not enough to say you want to get rid of Obamacare, but you must be able to bring a replacement to the table in order to win the debate and win the people. Roy and Jindal were correct, unfortunately the voters seemed to have moved on. Roy also has a book How Medicaid Fails the Poor which was an expanded precursor of the types of themes he and Gov. Jindal brought to the debate about Obamacare.

Robert McReynolds published a nice refutation of Avik Roy’s latest call to cry havoc and release the collective dogs of white guilt. I actually think Roy has some misguided merit to his ideas but misses the mark with typical beltway arrogance of intellect. Why can we now have conversations about race in 2016 that were […]

The national party candidates have thrown my own political station into stark relief. As a fiscal conservative, social moderate, hawkish Republican, I’ve managed to get along under the big tent without too much discomfort. Until now. And the women in my life have clarified my political world. My wife, a personal finance operator who makes […]

Brooklyn is a romantic period drama that came out last year, based on the 2009 novel of the same name. It wasn’t a smash hit (the Honest Trailers video for the Oscar nominees made the following crack about Brooklyn: “I’ll be honest. I haven’t seen Brooklyn, and neither have you. You can only see so many movies”), but […]
