Donald Trump quotes Mussolini because he finds being a lion for a day “interesting,” lauds the Chinese massacre at Tieneman by saying China “nearly blew it” when it hesitated in mowing down its own citizens, and actively opposes the first and fifth amendments to the U.S. constitution. Donald Trump is a tyrant in waiting. No […]

This is both a Ricochet post and a memo to Rush Limbaugh, Mr. Conservative, who has surprisingly continued to cover for Donald Trump, focusing on Trump performances, antics, tactics, instead of Trump policies. Several takeaways from the last debate: More

I found this old handout on my hard drive. (I do not remember from whom I crimped it.) Thinking of Trump is what sent me searching for it. American writers appear to group themselves into two types, which Philip Rahv labels “paleface” and “redskin.” No love is lost between them. Henry James is the type […]

I’m sitting here listening to Massenet, the Meditation from Thaïs, and it strikes me that it might be the most beautiful piece of music I’ve ever heard. Do you have one that you think is the most beautiful?  More

http://reason.com/blog/2016/02/23/how-political-correctness-caused-college I’m a teaching assistant at a large public university. At some point in the last two years (around the Ferguson, BLM explosion of insanity), I noticed a change in my freshman students. They used to be kind of laid back and cool. Now they react hostilely to any little thing I say that could […]

Yes, #NeverTrump — that is where I am too. But there’s a risk of premature defeatism here. I vote tomorrow, and it’s still not over after that. We have, maybe, only a couple weeks to turn this around — but we have that time; let’s use it, and may God help us to use it wisely. Meanwhile, […]

An Appeal to Classical Liberals It is February 29th, and it seems as though God has had some mercy on us, and created an extra day for us to live in a world where Donald Trump isn’t the presumptive republican nominee. I suggest you open your windows and enjoy the natural light, before we start […]

Promoted from the Ricochet Member Feed by Editors Created with Sketch. The Bern’s Declining Flicker

Bernie-Sanders-Sad-400x240A quick update from a Millennial who’s been watching the race on the other side: Bernie’s not going to win. He got shellacked Saturday in South Carolina, doing significantly worse than expected. When your expected margin is losing by 38.8%, it takes losing by 47.5% to qualify as “significantly worse than expected.”

Bernie’s loss in South Carolina follows his loss in Nevada. The latter was due to his lack of support among Hispanic voters*, while the former was due to his lack of support among Black voters. With Super Tuesday featuring the large, minority-heavy states of Texas and Georgia, Sanders is looking at another rough night, though the contests in Massachusetts and Oklahoma look close.

Contributor Post Created with Sketch. White Supremacists for Trump!

Donald Trump had a little trouble avoiding the Caucasian of sin this weekend. He had a chance to take aim at the Ku Klux Klan but he wouldn’t fire until he saw the ayes of their whites. I’m thinking he didn’t hear the question properly — how about Jew?

I explain it all in today’s podcast.

Every four years the Mainstream Media plays the same game. They give great press to their “favorite” Republican right up until he gets the nomination. And then they lower the boom. The guy that they just finished praising as reasonable and well-respected suddenly becomes a Nazi. This time around they’ve selected Trump as “their” guy. They […]

Some folks, myself included, have responded to the debacle of Donald J. Trump’s candidacy with calls for the formation of a Conservative party. Might this not ensure, though, a generation of progressive dominance by splitting the vote on the right? After all, we do not have a parliamentary system whereby power might be shared between the […]

Contributor Post Created with Sketch. Identity Politics Have Infected the Right

In mathematics and computer science, a term, symbol, or variable with multiple meanings is called “overloaded.” Overloading can lead to confusion. One must understand the context in order to understand which meaning applies.

For better or worse, the term “conservative” has become overloaded. There is a conservative temperament; a conservative political philosophy; and a conservative political movement, all with some overlap but not the same things. Recent experience suggests that we can add another meaning of the word: “Conservative” has become an identity marker. Just as the Left has used identity — racial, ethnic, sexual, etc. — as a proxy for politics, the Right now does the same.

As a conservative, Donald Trump knows a lot about 1 Amendments. It’s the one about fair speech and it’s the very first one. It says that we have libel laws for people who write purposely negative and horrible and false articles about him. So we need to elect Trump president so he can open up […]
