Tabula Rasa has a post outlining how he has come around on Ricochet 2.0. I thought I’d add my two cents. (NOTE: not my two thumbs or single sock). As I noted in my comment on Tabula’s post and many other times, I’m unhappy that it launched in this condition. There were too many bugs, […]

What’s Your Advice for A Happy Life?

Over the weekend, the Wall Street Journal ran a piece by Charles Murray adapted from his forthcoming book, The Curmudgeon’s Guide to Getting Ahead: Dos and Don’ts of Right Behavior, Tough Thinking, Clear Writing, and Living a Good Life, a volume that belongs on all sensible people’s bookshelves.

In the Journal column, he lays out five pieces of advice for living a happy life, which I’ve copied below along with brief excerpts of the accompanying explanations:

http://www.politico.com/story/2014/03/obamacare-in-oregon-a-failed-exchange-105189.html?hp=t3_3 Out here in Oregon, Cover Oregon and Gov. Kitzhaber have led the country in managing the nations most disastrous Health Care Exchange. For inexplicable reasons Oregon’s version of  Obamacare has received little to no national attention. As of today, the $300 million Cover Oregon website has signed up 0 people with only 300k Oregonians receiving […]

Am I The Only Person Who Doesn’t Care About the Noah Movie? — Tabula Rasa

Some things are best left to one’s imagination. That’s how I feel about most biblical “epics.”

That’s also why the new movie about Noah fails to engage my interest, even though I like its cast. My unwillingness to get excited about the movie is totally aside from the arguments that God is strangely left out, or that it is basically an environmental screed, or that its special effects are the main character.

And so our happy month is drawing to a close. Of course, if I’ve learned anything in the past decades, it’s that happiness is fleeting. Perhaps that’s why our Founders saw our right to pursue happiness, but said nothing of our grasping hold and maintaining it. Happiness comes and goes, and at times we eagerly […]

Upcoming Ricochet Meetups

As always, we’re delighted to hear from Ricochet members around the country who are organizing meetups with their fellow Ricochetti. Attending these events gives you the chance to experience the community aspects of Ricochet up close and personal — getting together in the flesh with your favorite online friends to talk politics, discuss culture, and forge friendships that will last a lifetime. Some of the upcoming events:

  • Charlotte, North Carolina (April 11-13)
  • Columbus, Ohio (April 15)
  • Round Rock, Texas (May 3)
  • Fargo, North Dakota (May 10)
  • Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (June 11)

Information on these and other (as yet unscheduled meetups) can be found at ricochetmeetup.com

In the spirit of the Jimmy Carter write in ballot yesterday that Sunday’s be New Music Sundays, I thought I might try extending the idea to identifying a theme per day of the week.  Monday’s are meant for getting and going despite our desire to do otherwise.   Music is a good partner in that […]

What the Chinese See in the Jews — Judith Levy

Here are a few things many Chinese people believe about Jews, according to a piece in Tablet Magazine by Clarissa Sebag-Montefiore:

  1. The Jews run the United States of America.
  2. The Jews control the international media.
  3. The Jews control the world’s money.

These tropes are obviously familiar. What makes them unusual in this instance is that the Chinese see these as features, not bugs.

Yep, I admit it. I hate the family dog. Okay, she is a pretty mutt, an American Eskimo, all white and longed haired. So it isn’t that she’s ugly. Heck, even if she were, I’m ugly so I could put up with that. It’s not that she is bad. Yes, she yaps, barks, and screeches […]

I’m really curious about the size factor.  Chris Christie is a big boy.   I’d hate to tell you about all the problems big boys get, but I will anyway.  Diabetes, Sleep Apnea, GERD, and an eternity of problems in addition innumerable fungi in your skin folds but all of that is secondary to not […]

Have I found a legal loophole to end the oppressive seizure of income by those states that tax income?  SCOTUS in Pollock V. Farmer’s Loan & Trust, declared income tax illegal.  In a fit of bad planning the States then amended the constitution,  the 16th amendment making income tax legal.   It states very clearly […]

A bunch of hugs go out to 10 cents who suggested RicoMeet, and to Pencilvania, who stepped up to the drawing board to create some logos.  Please vote in the comments.  I can’t decide if RicoMeet is better as a noun or a verb, but regardless, the member initiated meet ups are a lot of […]

A lot of people in Ricochet are probably aware that liberals have been attacking suburbs for some time.  For one thing, they’re seen as a way to escape control of the big city. I just read this, by Paul Graham, which mostly is about teenagers in school, and why nerds are treated the way they […]
