In July of 1867, Father Sarto, then 32 years of age, was appointed pastor of Salzano, one of the most favored parishes in the diocese of Treviso. Soon his concern and help toward the poor became well known throughout the parish, and his two sisters, who acted as his housekeepers, were often at wit’s end […]

Prognostications for 2014

When it comes to predictions, I have, ahem, a mixed record.

I got 2010 right very early on, arguing late in the summer of 2009 that the Tea Party Movement was a portent and that, if the Republicans even pretended to get on board, they would sweep in November, 2010—which they did, taking the House and doing better at the state and local level than they had done at any time since 1928.

“As surely as the Lord your God lives,” she replied, “I don’t have any bread—only a handful of meal in a jar and a little oil in a jug. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for myself and my son, that we may eat it—and die.”1 Kings […]

Writing at MSNBC.com, Geoffrey Cowley has some good news. The new health care exchanges may have opened with a whimper this fall, but they closed the year with a surge as consumers rushed to meet the Dec. 24 deadline for insurance policies that take effect January 1st. Over 2 million people have now enrolled in […]

10 cents’ note on a new type of addition reminded me of the following problem. Three fishermen at a remote river location catch N fish and realize that it’s too late for them to leave.  So they put the fish in a pile and go to sleep.  A few hours later one of them wakes […]

What’s the benefit of marrying into a family of ex-Soviet citizens? Crazy media reading on the holidays. Although I grew up as a child of the Cold War in Kansas (Titan missile bases miles from my house, “The Day After” TV show), it’s still hard, even though I’ve lived in a former Soviet republic for […]

Italy’s high court has overturned a man’s conviction for having sex with an eleven year old girl because: …the verdict did not sufficiently consider “the ‘consensus’, the existence of an amorous relationship, the absence of physical force, the girl’s feelings of love”. Preview Open

Some fascinating history. A sample: “As Christianity spread, and then became the official religion of the Roman Empire in 380 (Constantine allowed the toleration of Christianity in 313, but it was left to Emperor Theodosius to do the deed for which Constantine is often credited), pagan holidays were either incorporated into the Christian calendar or […]

John Hinderaker at Power Line notes: From the Daily Mail, a fascinating historical document that I had never seen before: in July 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the moon for the first time.  In those days, America’s space program took real risks–remember Apollo 13–and it was by no means certain that Armstrong […]

Your Thoughts On Stephen A. Smith’s Statement About the Wrongful Ostracizing of Black Conservatives?

Blacks in America famously shifted from being a mostly Republican monolith to a mostly Democrat monolith.

After the Civil War, Blacks voted near-universally for the Republican Party, who formed to free them from slavery. They voted Republican at a much higher percentage than whites did for decades. The Ku Klux Klan was formed by Democrats and part of their oath was that a member had to swear to never have been a Republican. Blacks were not even allowed to attend the Democratic National Convention before 1924.

Not new, but worth repeating… To All My Democrat Friends: Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit, my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low-stress, non-addictive, gender-neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday, practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or secular practices of your choice, with […]

I’ve never had a good meal at a Chinese restaurant with the words “golden”, “palace” or “lucky” in the name.   Have you? I have fond memories of China Land in San Diego in my teens, where the main drags leading  away from the Naval Training Center and Marine Corps Recruit Depot intersected.  It served OK Cantonese, […]

There’s a palliative care patient next to the Doctor’s office. She’s the only patient on the floor on this particular ward. She’s 90 , from a nursing home, with advanced Alzheimer’s Disease, heart failure and kidney failure…. and perhaps has had a heart attack (Her blood enzymes are suggestive). She’s all alone, nurses don’t check […]
