I had a little extra time this morning, not having anywhere to be until 9:30. That meant a cup of coffee, freshly brewed at home.  That meant a long, hot shower, and a piece of toast with butter.  Another piece of toast; more butter.  That meant that the kid with his little runny nose got […]

If you recall, David scolded us during the PPACA debate that we should have negotiated and compromised on this legislation; he was wrong because we’d never get enough to make it worth having our fingerprints on that cow pattie. Now, in his piece “The ObamaCare Ripoff”, he has discovered that people get their insurance canceled […]

I’m honestly curious about this question myself, and I don’t think I’m the only one… With the rise in popular of Rand’s work in the last 10-20 years, can one be a Christian and an Objectivist? Is there a dichotomy between a philosophy that teaches that an “individual should ‘exist for his own sake, neither […]

A polling firm came out with a look at libertarians that included this snippet: Compared to the general population, libertarians are significantly more likely to be non-Hispanic white, male, and young. Nearly all libertarians are non-Hispanic whites (94%), more than two-thirds (68%) are men, and more than 6-in-10 (62%) are under the age of 50. […]

A Political Crook Without a Party?

Echoing reporting from Al Jazeera, the Los Angeles Times reports tonight on allegations that California state senator Ronald Calderon accepted more than $60,000 from undercover FBI agents purporting to seek legislation favorable to the film industry.  But if one is curious as to which political party Calderon belongs, nowhere in the 500-word story is this information revealed, an omission that of course tells the astute reader he’s a Democrat.  (In an editorial fig leaf, a caption below the accompanying photograph identifies him with a “D-Montebello.”)  Al Jazeera somehow manages to squeeze Calderon’s party affiliation into the second paragraph of a 360-word piece.

And now my questions to the Ricochetti: If Calderon had been a Republican, how many times would this have been mentioned in the L.A. Times story?  And how is it that the L.A. Times and all the other California media outlets got scooped on this by Al Jazeera?

In his Morning Jolt newsletter this morning, Jim Geraghty puts together an impressive (depressing?) list of the dismally small numbers of successful Obamacare enrollments in various states. It turns out that not very many states have been able to get anyone to sign up. After One Month, Quite a Few States Don’t Have 1,000 Paid […]

Today’s selection is dedicated to Ricochet’s own Frozen Chozen, with whom I have chatted up in this forum many of the Twin Cities based acts I have been turned onto over the years.  A favorite connection has been Trampled by Turtles, an upper Mid-West band whose accoustic blue grass runs almost entirely in the opposite […]

Note: This is a day old because I only just got the time to do it.  If anyone else has already written on this, let me know; I’m sorry for stepping on your post. Buzzfeed has a post up by community member Michael Blackmon entitled “17 Deplorable Examples Of White Privilege“.  Some of the entries […]

Powerline really nailed Obama for his Big Lie tonight: http://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2013/10/obama-lies-health-care-dies.php The Republicans have had an issue handed to them for the 2014 election: “Obama lied to you and then made sure to protect his crowd of union members and government workers. We (the GOP) stand for Main Street America that wants a REAL free market […]

Last weekend, the Mrs. and I were invited to supper with the smart and gracious Janna Levin, a cosmologist, artist, and writer, who was visiting campus for a couple of days of talks. The Mrs. and I are both astrophysicists, and Mrs. H. does the same research Levin does, so it was a great chance […]

I’ve started a “second career” as a junior  college instructor in science. The college has enrolled me in a couple of month-long workshops on teaching methods, where I encounter edubabble. Can anybody recommend a Primer on Contemporary Edubabble? (This could be a book or review article, I suppose). Preview Open

Much has been made, quite legitimately, about Obama’s baldfaced lying about the impact of Ocare (“You can keep your doctor and plan”). I just wondered how the Ricochetti felt this ranked given other, previous, Presidential and Admin statements that, shall we say? stretched the truth. I offer the following to get us started: Preview Open

I caught the last two minutes of Hannity’s interview with the authors of the above mentioned book.  I believe it will be an interesting read.  If the truth ever materializes as to how our enemy gained the knowledge of who was on that Chinook helicopter that night, I reserve the right to tell my parents […]

Time for the GOP to Close the “Compassion Gap”

ObamaCare is a disaster. Our enemies could hardly have contrived a more destructive, divisive set-up for the practice of medicine. But if there is any silver lining to this national nightmare, it’s that it offers a second chance to a party that badly needs one.

So let’s seize this opportunity to re-introduce the Republican Party to America.
