Early on the misty morning of February 6, 1986, an ambulance, sirens and lights blaring, pulled up outside the Government Printing Office in Washington D.C., where reporters had gathered. Siren off, but with the lights still flashing, two attendants got out and raced to the rear of the ambulance. They pulled out Paul Olkhovski, an […]

Why Are Babies Yummy?

Here’s an off-the-wall item that has nothing to do with politics, because every once in a while, why not?

I’ve always been a little weirded out by the people — and there are lots of them — who respond to cute babies by saying, “Oh, I could just eat him up!” or “Doesn’t she just look delicious?” or (as was said to my baby firstborn, and which made me want to grab him and flee the scene): “Ooo! I could eat him alive!”

I once had the “opportunity” to meet a bunch of NYC mobsters.  They all were packing (although our host required all the pistols be deposited in a bathroom, not worn), and they all were licensed.  They all were licensed, it emerged over the course of the evening, because they all had local government jobs that […]

I would like to bring to your attention that Jonah Goldberg announced yesterday on The Corner that Cosmo the Wonderdog passed away. Anyone who is moderately familiar with Jonah’s writings, especially on NRO or on Twitter, will know that Cosmo was a very large and important part not only of Jonah’s literary oeuvre, but also […]

Mark Steyn says we are no longer rich enough to recover from all of our Ruling Party’s idiotic mistakes.  Too many Americans are so ignorant, stupid, and lazy that they will not fight to regain the liberty we lost years ago to the Progs no matter how desperate things get.  Every time I hear a […]

Does anyone know what’s going on with the debt limit?  It sounds like the Tea Party caucus in the House is in a position of forcing the U.S. into default, if it wants to. Is that correct?  Would the House really breach the debt limit?  Obama isn’t going to cave this time.  The man’s afraid […]

We have two games being played simultaneously. That’s the problem.  First Game: ObamaCare Let’s call the first game “ObamaCare.” Nobody likes ObamaCare. We read a story this week that Obama himself was just trying to come up with differentiating PR points from Hillary, and he blurted out a set of stupid promises, none of which […]

I just came home from watching Ron Howard’s new film, Rush.  I’m a huge F1 fan, and it has been exciting to see Ron at the various races the last couple of seasons, along with Niki Lauda, whom the film is, in part, about.  I was excited to see the movie, so much so that […]

I’ll be the first to admit that federal employees health benefits are a good deal. It’s not so much that we are offered gold plated plans; rather, we are offered a plethora of plans. In my geographical area I can choose from several different HMOs, about a dozen Fee-For-Service plans, high deductible options, health savings […]

It’s the decider in the AFL – Fremantle vs Hawthorn, at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (the MCG, or more recently just “the G”). I’m kinda torn – I grew up IN Fremantle, but WITH Hawthorn (my grandfather was a life member of Hawthorn, their bootmaker for 40 years – so my Mum bleeds the Hawks […]

I hope you’ll trust my translations. (Or check them!) In the Portuguese Wikipedia entry for “Tactical Schemes in Soccer,” but not the English entry, it says: “The first logical tactical scheme was the 4-2-4, when it was believed that the object of soccer was to score goals.” It is now believed that the object of […]

One of the cries most often uttered this week is “well we have to win elections” if we want to do x or y or z. Yet when the GOP does win elections what can we point to as an actual “rollback” of all these government programs and subsidies that the conservative intelligentsia claims to want to have […]
