Most people are understandably focused on the the topic of gay marriage after the mystifying, disastrous, fantastic (in the sense of fantasy) opinion that is Windsor v. United States. But a few folks are picking up on the fact that post-Windsor, laws criminalizing or banning polygamy are likely unconstitutional. Here’s Buzzfeed for starters: Preview Open

Yesterday while pondering the true horrors of Rubio’s immigration bill, it came to me that small-town, Normal Rockwell WASPs like me grew up with two American cultures: The one we experienced at home and church (“Traditional”) and the popular one delivered through entertainment and public schools (“Popular”). There are some overlaps, but there are many more regions where Traditional and […]

The Supreme Court Has Cheated Us All

Justice Scalia, concluding:

Few public controversies touch an institution so central to the lives of so many, and few inspire such attendant passion by good people on all sides.  Few public controversies will ever demonstrate so vividly the beauty of what our Framers gave us, a gift the Court pawns today to buy its stolen moment in the spotlight: a system of government that permits us to rule ourselves….

The legal theories of strict construction and/or originalism are based on what the words meant to the people who passed the law. These two gay marriage decisions are completely antithetical to that. Here’s a case where later judges have re-interpreted what the lawmakers of the time “really” meant, completely dictated by the subjective view of […]

I knew times were tough around the first of the year and a Ricochet 2.0 upgrade isn’t cheap. I guess pimping out middle aged women is the way to go to gin up the ad revenues. Is this is what is passing for appropriate advertising these days from the “Right People. Right Tone. Right Place” […]

What do you do/say, when you meet a rock star? I have an opportunity to meet Governor Walker this weekend. My college roommate called me to invite me to his business, where the Gov. will be signing into law the Wisconsin state budget, at my buddies’ business (which the Lt. Gov recruited to moved into […]

The GOP establishment, or, at least, what’s left of the old Rockerfeller/ Chamber of Commerce/ Consultant wing of it, thinks that the GOP must pass the Gang of 8 in order to save party by appealing to Hispanics. They are assuming that the GOP cannot appeal to Blacks. If the GOP can get 40% of the […]

Some of you may have seen some excerpts, at the end of the evening news, of a Belmont horse race wherein a horse ditched her jockey at the gate and then won the race.  Here are the full two minutes of that race.  For my money, the lady’s trainer should be sitting chilly with a […]

It’s not just because he voted against the immigration bill, but he laid out his reasons for voting against it in a thoughtful manner. And, as Stephen Kruiser said, he opposed it without using the words “liar,” “traitor,” or “amnesty.” “My bottom line in deciding whether or not I support this bill has always been […]

I just got a call from the NRSC and their whole pitch was take back the Senate so we won’t have an immigration bill like this. I was stunned, although it makes sense since most of the caucus voted against the bill. The call came just after a call from Marco Rubio’s committee. Ironic, isn’t […]

It’s wrong to think this is funny, right? Determining the exact nature of the new laws has been difficult, given that many ACA terms have yet to be worked out. Hollywood productions, for instance, might find it irksome simply trying to categorize employees as full- or part-time, seasonal or variable, and it’s important that they […]

Xbox One vs. PlayStation 4

The next generation of console wars is raging across the Internet with the imminent release of new gaming consoles by Microsoft and Sony. When Amazon’s Facebook page launched a friendly poll to gauge interest in the two systems, the voting was cancelled early when things started to get ugly. PlayStation 4 was killing Xbox One by 95 percent. Ouch!

Of course, part of that might have been a backlash to Microsoft’s DRM and always-online policies—policies they’ve now cancelled. Xbox One games will not require Internet connection every 24 hours just to play offline.

Aside from the obvious issue single term senators have in the Oval Office, I think Cruz’s real talent would be wasted if he ran for president. If he is to continue in public service, and there is every indication that he will, then I’d much rather see him don the black robe and take a […]

It’s been a crappy week for some conservatives.  But I just read something that made me feel a whole lot better. In this month’s Commentary, John Podhoretz writes a beautiful memorial for his sister Rachel (Bad Rachel of blogging fame and wife of Eliot Abrams), who died of cancer. Preview Open

Two Questions Regarding Snowden

Here in Seville, where I’ve been for almost a month, the big stories are Bon Jovi waiving their fee to make their concert affordable for struggling Spaniards, and Edward Snowden. TV and radio news cannot get enough of either story.

Two questions:
