In regard to James Lileks’ unexpected and fantastic question to Dennis Prager, I’m truly suprised no one has started this conversation. It is noteable that these two are always compared. Probably the most legitimate reason for comparing these two has something to do with their respective positions in the Austro-Germanic symphonic tradition. Much has been […]

Contributor Post Created with Sketch. Big Moolah, the GOP…and What the New York Times Won’t Tell You

In the New York Times today, a story on the private organizations that have sprung into being over the last several years to raise money and campaign on behalf of Republican candidates. By and large, the Times story does an admirable job of neutral reporting–that is, of suppressing the disdain for these organizations that the Times newsroom most certainly feels.

But then comes this:

How great was the Ricochet interview with Dennis Prager last week! What a thrill to finally hear the meetings of those minds! (Only wish that Rob Long could’ve sat in as well.) For those of you who don’t know, Dennis created a YouTube channel and website called “Prager University.” Here’s a brief description of the […]

“Each year, the Great Pumpkin rises out of the pumpkin patch that he thinks is the most sincere. He’s gotta pick this one. He’s got to. I don’t see how a pumpkin patch can be more sincere than this one. You can look around and there’s not a sign of hypocrisy. Nothing but sincerity as […]

Contributor Post Created with Sketch. Anita Hill Meets Herman Cain

Uh oh. This just in, from Politico:

POLITICO EXCLUSIVE: During Herman Cain’s tenure as the head of the National Restaurant Association in the 1990s, at least two female employees complained to colleagues and senior association officials about inappropriate behavior by Cain, ultimately leaving their jobs at the trade group, multiple sources confirm to POLITICO.

Tom Meltzer at the Guardian has made a short animated video confirming what you’re no doubt suspecting about the euro bailout:

Haaretz.com had what I thought was a hot story yesterday: One of the Saudi royals has placed a huge bounty on the heads of Israeli soldiers. Did anyone read of this in a domestic newspaper, watch it on a nightly TV news show, or hear it on talk radio? Fair or not, when I read […]

Contributor Post Created with Sketch. On the Eve of All Hallows, Or the Ricochet Pumpkin Patch

As Hallowe’en progresses, from time zone to time zone, East to West, would you do Ricochet a favor? Pull out your camera or smartphone, snap a picture of one or two of the most impressive/scariest/most creative Jack O’Lanterns in your neighborhood, then post them right here. Heck. We’ve all had it up to here with politics. Let’s have a little fun.

Stanford-Pumpkin-3.jpgI’m composing this on Sunday evening, the day before Hallowe’en, to be sure to catch the attention of Claire, in Turkey, and Judith, in Israel (I don’t know if anybody carves pumpkins over there, but I thought I’d at least give Claire and Judith to comment on Hallowe’en in their parts of the world), but I herewith do my best to get things rolling with a couple of shots I took in our own neighborhood last year.

I attended a public panel discussion not too long ago on the subject of curriculum reform sponsored by the Society for the College, an organization for which I happen to serve on the board. A particular point of contention among faculty was whether or not there should be some sort of writing composition requirement, something […]

Contributor Post Created with Sketch. Libya Finds “Nuclear Materials”

This just in:

AGI) Tripoli – The outgoing premier of Libya’s NTC, Mahmoud Jibril, has announced that nuclear weapons were found in the country. It was reported by TV network Al Arabiya. Muammar Gaddafi officially gave up his nuclear weapons program in 2004 in a bid to strengthen Libya’s ties with the West. Jibril also said that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will provide further details on the weapons found in the next few days …

On Fox News Sunday today Rick Perry was confronted by Chris Wallace with the reality that his plan will result in a bigger tax break for upper income people than the middle class. I may be wrong, but it sounded a lot like Perry said that he doesn’t give a rat’s posterior that upper earners […]

Contributor Post Created with Sketch. The Week Democracy in Europe Died

“[B]elieve me,” writes our own James Delingpole below, “however bad you think things are in the US right now, being in Europe, even on the periphery, at the moment is like standing on the prow of the Titanic and watching the iceberg approaching.”

According to Janet Daley of the London Telegraph, last week the iceberg struck.

Given the high stakes of the 2012 election and a Republican field that is weaker than most of us would like, it’s not surprising that so many of us have taken a rather Eor-esque approach to the process of selecting a nominee. I’ve certainly spent more time than in previous elections obsessing over the candidates’ […]

Mona Charen’s recent article in National Review takes up the “problem of the decline in marriageable males[,]” and places the blame on women for their role in the sexual revolution. Women, she writes, have “conspired in their own disempowerment not because they love their sexual freedom (though a few may), but because people like Gloria Steinem . Excellent piece in the NYT about the Herminator that really illustrates the head scratching that Mr Cain is eliciting from the pundit class. Embedded in it was a quote from that noted amateur obstetrician/blogger, Andrew Sullivan, stating that the Republican party has an “increasing detachment from the reality of governance.” It seems to me that the public, […]
