Contributor Post Created with Sketch. Hillsdale’s New Graduate School of Statesmanship

Here is some news that someone you know might be able to use.

After almost one hundred seventy years as a liberal arts college dedicated solely to the education of undergraduates, Hillsdale College is, in a very modest way, branching out – with the establishment, within its politics department, of a Graduate School of Statesmanship. Its aim is to provide instruction at the graduate level in political philosophy, American government, and statesmanship with an eye to preparing young people for careers in the academy, in think tanks, and in government.

I have just read two excellent articles (both from National Review) about Herman Cain’s economic ideas, in particular the “Nine, Nine, Nine” plan.  They have given me pause and a good deal to think about, and I think that they will do the same for you.   The first is by Kevin D. Williamson in […]

Contributor Post Created with Sketch. Fox & Friends’ Extraordinary Coverage of the Killing of Anwar Al-Awlaki

At 4:15 Pacific time this morning, I turned on the TV to watch Fox & Friends.  Immediately, I heard the Fox-News-alert “bing” and Iearned that U.S. drones had killed Anwar Al-Awlaki.   As Steve Doocy noted, Fox News’ K.T. McFarlane had earlier explained why this was more important than the killing of Usama bin Laden.  The reason was because bin Laden had largely been isolated and unable to direct many terror attacks.  Meanwhile, Awlaki was not so isolated and had recently directed more attacks than bin Laden. Further, he was younger, more internet savvy, and seemed to represent the future of al Qaeda.

For the remaining hour and 45 minutes of the show, the hosts interviewed Gen. Tom McInerny, Gen. Jack Keane, Judith Miller, Geraldo Rivera and others.  All provided impressive information and insights about Awlaki.  Fox & Friends also provided a report from correspondent Greg Palkot, who relayed some information from a secret source in Yemen.  The show provided another report from correspondent Jennifer Griffin, who relayed information from an anonymous source in the Pentagon.

This is something I’ve thought about since the Obama administration announced this policy last year, that they would target American citizens. I think it brings up important questions about national security and the safeguards we want to have in place so that the gov’t doesn’t just recklessly kills people without justification.  But is this policy […]

OK; never mind the fact that I can’t think of a single person who is actually advocating that we should have to pay no taxes.  Never mind the fact that the apparent hypocrisy against using ‘infrastructure’ while protesting an expanding federal behemoth is a canard (I mean, you already paid for it, didn’t you, so […]

The argument in favor of the Postmodern tendency to deconstruct and reconstruct reality is that it has allowed us to gain new insights by viewing events and ideas from a fresh, unbiased perspective.  Unfortunately, this tendency has also caused an almost complete disregard for context.  Without context, true understanding is impossible.  So if you, like […]

I watched the season premiere of the CBS police drama Blue Bloods recently, and it reminded me that I sometimes wonder if anyone in entertainment media is aware that this show even exists. If they knew what was going on on this show, they might second guess their decision to air it. This is justified […]

Ramesh Ponnuru wrote a great article in the August 29 issue of NR that argued the Tea Party’s control of the GOP is more myth than reality. The more I hear this line from liberals the more I tend to think that it’s a cliche or talking point used to demogogue them, especially when racism […]

I just watched a short video commentary on Greece at StratFor and their conclusion seems to be that Europe can’t afford to kick Greece out of the Eurozone, yet can’t afford to let them stay, either. and so the path forward goes like this: Greece is not salvageable. Greece simply can’t compete unless it is […]

Many thanks to Troy, Casey, and Mollie for their recent posts on the unbelievable regular-season baseball finale. In my family are a Yankees fan (dad), Tigers fan (mom), D-Backs fan (sister), and Brewers fan (me)–what fun. Any chance we could get Ricochet’s Own (TM) Ursula Hennessey to weigh in on the awesomeness that is October […]

Contributor Post Created with Sketch. Obesity, a Roadblock to the White House?

Here on Ricochet, we’ve had a few conversations about politicians’ looks, and whether those looks are presidential.  Tommy De Seno’s wife, for instance, just doesn’t think Paul Ryan “looks like a President.”  Pat Sajak thinks Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush all looked the part, but that Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford, and Al Gore simply didn’t.

Whenever this topic comes up, Chris Christie’s weight inevitably surfaces in conversation.  I get the sense that most here don’t consider Christie’s obesity a liability, and some might even consider it a net plus.  For example, Scott Reusser says that, “for me, somehow it seems to add to his oh-what-the-hell-I’m-just-going-to-tell-it-like-it-is image.”

As some others have noted on the member feed, Herman Cain has been pushing his 9-9-9 plan of which the final 9 represents a 9% national sales tax.  This is probably a fine idea except that I believe that the only taxing power the federal government has is excise taxes, import duties and income taxes […]

Reporters will interview that woman at significant anniversaries, asking her if she knew what a pivotal role […]

Contributor Post Created with Sketch. My Big, Incomprehensible Feud With Some Other Blogger

This one is so important that I need to settle the score before I mention that the Chinese are planning to invest a billion dollars to open a coal mine and build a coal power plant in Turkey. I don’t know much about the Zhejiang Energy Group, but I don’t plan to find out, because I have a lot of irate blogging to do. Someone who wants to do real journalism might look into this, though.
