I got the Middle East and Central Asia correct. Some of the African countries I had a hard time placing except for Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Algeria, Morocco, and Sudan.
Four wrong. Pretty good I thought. Never been to any of these places.
The Stans and the non-Mediterranean African countries screwed me up. Got most of the Arabian Peninsula right, though.
I got all the ‘stans right on the first try, much to my surprise! I guess reading my brother’s letters from Ukraine (and pointing out Ukraine repeatedly on the map to the kids) gave me some learning-by-osmosis. I did get two of the African countries wrong, but the right answer was always one that shared a border. And I got Bahrain wrong, not because I didn’t know where it was, but because it’s a teeny tiny island right next to Qatar and it was hard to get the pointer there.
The problem for many of these states is that their borders are meaningless lines on a map. Many of them are only sovereign with the good will/neglect of larger powers.
The site distributes some disturbing propaganda.
This page on Islam, for example, has a whole flurry of hagiographic canards –amounting to indoctrination, not education. There are too many to list, so I’ll just mention two instances of feeble Arabic lexicography. ….
Yes, when I woke up this a.m. I realized I should have checked out the site a bit more. I just love map quizzes and so I blindly took it and shared it. However, there are many quizzes out there, and I know of them since I used to have my students take online ones all the time. Should have linked to one of those. Anyway, I saw this quiz on my husband’s facebook feed. We both have some crazy, nutty (liberal) facebook friends, so I’m not at all surprised that the site has crazy, nutty (and dangerous!) world views. Sorry folks.

Now that’s branding for ya.
Done. Had some problems with Western Sahara (it doesn’t hint Morocco).
Getting the last ten was pretty comical. Glad there isn’t a scoring element.
As a teacher, I was prepared to use this as a resource…until I saw the crap about climate change and “Wisconsin: justice is in the air.” FAIL.
it was iffy. . .but let Clair know that I got Turkey on the first try!
If only the USSR hadn’t broken up I would have had a perfect score. Too many ‘stans that I never quite sorted out. Until now.
Mixed up Tajikstan with Kyrgyzstan. I wish they had one for cities.
Yes! I got *that* one correct. The Stans, among others (if I’m being honest), killed me.
Hi Keith, I used this site for maps games for my students. As far as I can tell, it’s not pushing any philosophy. Let me know if you see one!
I did pretty well I think. Mixed up a couple of the ‘Stans and a couple of the African countries. Guessed and surprised myself on the Gulf States. But I have been to a number o the countries on the map.
Same.

“The ‘stans, the ‘stans!”
Same here. Had no idea which ‘stan was which, got all the rest right. ·Apr 6 at 7:17pm
Right about now, this test is only a secondary reason to wish the USSR was still around. There was some advantage to having rational bad guys keeping irrational bad guys in line.
As for the test itself, I’m sure I did somewhat better than the average Harvard Grievance Studies major.
Switched Bahrain and Yemen and switched Tajikstan and Kyrgyzstan.
Is this the first step to Ricochet Jeopardy? I’ll take ‘stans for $100!
Wow. It took my eight-year-old and me a long time. Some of it I attribute to the irritability of the arrow, but geography was not my strong suit.
How did you get to the website this was on, though?
Same here. Had no idea which ‘stan was which, got all the rest right.
For those of you with an Xbox 360, there’s a great little geography game on Xbox Live called Globe Clicker. It tells you a city and you have to click on the location using either a topographical map or a night-time satellite image. It scores you on both accuracy and time. And the city list goes beyond capitols.
I’m a big fan of interactive lessons for kids.
I flipflopped the Tajiks and Uzbeks, and Bahrain and Qatar. A far cry from my old National Geographic globe!
To my amazement, I got the ‘stans right – probably because I’ve been staring at maps of the northern Afghanistan border – but flipped Yemen and Oman, also Mali and Niger. And I thought Bahrain simply wasn’t on the map…until I squinted real hard and saw the eensy teensy white dot.
It looks like a majority of Ricochet members agree: this game has the ‘Stans sideways.
This discriminates against iPad !
I thought I was pretty smart, until (like others) I ran into the ‘stans. I did not study these in school since it was all USSR then, but I suppose that is no excuse. I had trouble with Western Sahara too. I want to try tomorrow with my 9 year old.
Okay, that was embarrassing.
Beat it, but I definitely needed to brush up. Thanks.
I didn’t know Western Sahara existed.
Palestinians, you’re on world maps. You’re a free nation. Act like it.
