QOTD: “Lucky you” (Harry Potter)

I don’t know how many Harry Potter fans are on Ricochet, considering that I’ve never seen a post about it before, but as a typical millennial, it’s probably my favorite book series. I’m currently listening to them on audiobook for the first time (the Jim Dale versions), and I recently finished book 5, Order of the Phoenix. As always, this particular conversation between Ginny and Harry jumped out at me, and since it includes one of my favorite quotes from the entire series, I thought I’d share:

“We wanted to talk to you, Harry,” said Ginny, “but as you’ve been hiding ever since we got back–”

“I didn’t want anyone to talk to me,” said Harry, who was feeling more and more nettled.

“Well, that was a bit stupid of you,” said Ginny angrily, “seeing as you don’t know anyone but me who’s been possessed by You-Know-Who, and I can tell you how it feels.”

Harry remained quite still as the impact of these words hit him. Then he turned on the spot to face her.

“I forgot,” he said.

“Lucky you,” said Ginny coolly.

For anyone who needs a reminder, this takes place shortly after Harry, Hermione, and the Weasley children return to the Burrow around Christmas after Harry has the dream/vision about Mr. Weasley being attacked by Nagini. Arthur is found and taken to the hospital, but Harry withdraws from everyone around him out of fear that Voldemort is going to use him to hurt someone he cares about.

One reason I love this quote so much is just because of the emotional impact; the reminder of what Ginny went through during Chamber of Secrets three years before, and how much that must still haunt her (something Harry doesn’t really think about until this moment, and so neither do we). However, another great thing about this conversation, and the book in general, is that Ginny is really starting to become a central character. She’s more involved in the plot of the books now, and we get to see highlighted the fiery and bold personality that makes her such a fantastic character. In fact, my favorite thing about the Harry Potter series is the development of so many engrossing and complex characters!

If you’ve only ever watched the movies, Book Ginny is so much better than Movie Ginny. Book Ginny would never tie Harry’s shoes for him; unless she was tying them together! 😂

My favorite quote from the books is at the end of the first book, when Harry and Dumbledore are discussing the destruction of the Philosopher’s Stone. (note: if you can, get the British editions of all the books, and the new illustrated editions-they are more authentic than the US editions).

    Dumbledore says:

To the well-organized mind, death is but the next great adventure.

There are definitely some Potterheads on Ricochet, of all ages. @rushbabe49 is a yuuuuuge fan (and a Baby Boomer). I’m a Gen-Xer who adores the series (Mr. Charlotte and I read the books aloud to each other over the years as they came out). Pretty sure there are others. Back in the early days of Ricochet there was a wonderful guy named Kennedy Smith who was perhaps the biggest HP fanboy of all time. Sadly, he died several years ago but is remembered very fondly.

I’m a fan, however my wife is an uber-fan. Not sure whether she’s spent more hours reading and re-reading the series, or scoffing at the movies (other than the two Chris Columbus directed).

It was the first movie that hooked me on Harry Potter, even before I had read the first book. I still think that was the best of all the movies.

Allie, my apologies for failing to recognize your great quote. Order of the Phoenix was the first time that the “raging hormones” of puberty affect all the kids, and cloud all their judgment. Ginny does get some great development, too.

The scene at Ollivander’s where Harry gets his wand is maybe the best of all the movies. Perfect. RIP John Hurt.

Another fan here (late boomer). I got hooked reading the first book to my daughter, then in second grade (she had ghastly reading teachers until 4th grade). One of my favorite memories is sitting in the car by the shores of Dillon reservoir, my husband at some conference. She and I were racing to finish the third book before he got done, to see if Sirius and Buckbeak would be saved. He wasn’t amused that we groaned when he walked up, leaving everything in suspense.

As a matter of fact, I’m rereading them now. About a third of the way into Goblet of Fire. Love your quote!

Azkaban is definitely one of the best books in the series! That’s such a great memory.

Allie, the group is public, so you should be able to join easily.  On your own page, or even here, hover your mouse over your profile picture, and you will see a bunch of links, one of which is “groups”.  Click on “all groups”, and search for Harry Potter Lovers.  There should be a ‘join” button.

My Patronus is a stoat (sort of like a weasel), but if I get another chance to get one, I’ll try and see if I can get something else.  I’m betting that the wizards behind the Wizarding World site are making new interactive “tests” for both wands and Patronuses.

I agree with you. Ginny was practically written for Harry, but the movies shoved her out. It was always about Harry having a family. And for both Hermionie and Harry, marrying them into the Weasley clan was the best way to treat the orphans in the group.

You know, I never thought about it that way, but you are right!  Personally, I think Harry should have been more effusive toward Molly Weasley, especially when he was younger.  She was the mother-figure in his life, and I felt like he was too distant, even knowing that boys aren’t as emotional as girls are.

I always assumed this was due to Harry’s wariness toward adults in general. He always has a hard time trusting them since so many have let him down.
