We Need More Men Like King Randall

At a time when kids are emerging from criminal incarceration and broken homes, we need heroes like King Randall stepping in with a vision and pure determination.

A Marine veteran, King Randall has decided that in the absence of other help from his community in Albany, Georgia, he would rescue these abandoned young men, put a roof over their heads and provide them with training in the trades and in academics. He was even prepared to raise funds to provide a boarding school for them.

But the local school authorities don’t want any part of his plans.

King Randall made an offer for $500,000 on a school that was about to be demolished. Unfortunately, after dragging out the transaction for seven months, the school district superintendent decided he didn’t want Randall opening a school without meeting certain conditions; it was rumored that he didn’t want the competition. The superintendent decided to require that the school could not open as a private or charter school; that Randall had to prove that he was opening the school for the “public benefit.”

Seriously? Here is a young man who is taking kids off the street, giving them a place to live, and offering them an education when others have probably assumed that they are a lost cause.

The lack of support from the education hierarchy is tragic.

Find out more at TheXForBoys.org. You can also see King Randall recently interviewed by a local newscaster.

In this video production (which I’ll bet was produced by a donor), Randall’s down-to-earth efforts don’t seem to mesh with it. I encourage you to go to the other videos on his website or the one where he is interviewed. He’s smart and dedicated and impressive.

This makes me sad.  If there is any truth to the charge of systemic racism in America, It is that the public education system has continually failed young black men in particular.

Me, too, @raxxalan. And outraged. His own community is rejecting him for political reasons. It’s a travesty.

The military has managed to undo the damage inflicted by local government and public education in many cases but now we are seeing the overt effort to destroy that as well.

Wouldn’t our knowledge and experience tell us this opposition is a constant in the response by public education officials and teacher unions to any private entity infringing on the education domain? And they use public resources to fight these battles.

Yes, which is why we need more school choice and we need to break up the teacher’s unions.   Monopolies are never good for the consumer. Public Governmental control of the monopoly doesn’t change this.

I agree. But this particular situation is pretty pathetic, given the man who is starting it, the kids he’s rescuing, and his goals. Also, why did it take them 7 months to refuse the deal requiring that he meet their demands? And is it legal for them to do that after the fact? I hope there’s a lawsuit coming.

Everything that Democrats are doing for (actually doing to) impoverished minorities is exactly the opposite of what need to be done. Good on Randall.

Probably. He’s not only a black who has conservative values, a Christian and a Marine veteran, but he’s not afraid to admit all three. It makes me wonder if those factors played any role in their shutting him out, @freeven.

We are seeing some great efforts by several states to find creative ways to increase school choice: tax breaks for businesses and scholarships for students are two of them. The states can’t keep up with the demand from parents, and the businesses are stepping up.
