TX06 Special Election Followup

Today is May 1st and municipal election day in Texas.  I wanted to follow up on the results of the TX06 special election that was held also.  I thought there might be interest since there were 4 previous posts on the election with over 200 replies.  I guess it is technically 3 posts (one, two, three) and a podcast in the last month.

The big contention was whether this “anti-Trump” upstart, Michael Wood, would be the future of the GOP.   One of the candidates in the race was the widow of the individual who previously occupied the office.  Mrs. Wright is the leading vote-getter and will be in the run-off.   With 94% of the votes in, second place is barely held by Jake Ellzey, who I thought was the most likely winner (I didn’t know about the widow component).  If these results hold, it will be two GOP candidates in the runoff.  Third place is some Democrat that would certainly lose in the runoff.  And that anti-Trump upstart? He is currently in 9th position with about 3% of the vote.  It looks like that bold strategy didn’t pay off in MAGA country.  Paging Liz Cheney…

Candidate Votes Percent
Susan Wright GOP 15,020 19.21%
Jake Ellzey GOP 10,842 13.86%
Jana Sanchez DEM 10,476 13.40%
Brian Harrison GOP 8,474 10.84%
Shawn Lassiter DEM 6,941 8.88%
John Castro GOP 4,308 5.51%
Tammy Allison DEM 4,222 5.40%
Lydia Bean DEM 2,913 3.72%
Michael Wood GOP 2,497 3.19%
Michael Ballantine GOP 2,212 2.83%

The important thing is that the Camping Ban looks like it is passing in Austin.  Yeah!

3% for the NAT. I guess Rs don’t listen to the endorsement of a formerly R newspaper. Paging a certain NTer for his explanation.

Obviously, the 97% need to beg the 3% for forgiveness and to be allowed back into the club.

Is it still legal for MAGA types to vote in Texas? If so, it seems like a clear case of voter suppression.

Such a shocking result. Does noone read the newspaper? Or take their orders from the newspaper? Or from Ricochet posters? Truly shocking.

The only serious problem might be that Michael Wood was only Second To Last, not Last.  That might be reason enough for some people to be jubilant.

But at least he apparently finished below ALL of the Democrats.  That’s something.

Despite never running for elected office before, Michael Wood came in 9th out of 23 candidates, beating out 6 Democrats.  More significantly, he came in 5th out of 11 Republican candidates.  Not a bad showing at all.  The nature of these jungle primaries is that towards the end the leading two or three candidates cannibalize the voters from everyone below them, while candidates down the list have people desert them.  Also, Texas has a long history of electing a Congressman’s widow to his seat.  This election held true to that form with Ron Wright’s widow, Susan Wright coming in first.

That Michael Wood held on to his votes is a sign of future strength.

Let’s go back to 2008.  A Joe Biden came in 5th among Democrats once the race settled down to Obama, Hillary and Edwards.  Folks who liked Biden or Bill Richardson deserted them for the three leaders.

What ever happened to that Joe Biden?  Clearly coming in 5th in Iowa was the kiss of death for him….

Again, Biden won Georgia, Arizona, and Wisconsin and Pennsylvania by .2%, .3%, and .6%.  Without the NT vote, Trump and Biden would have each had 269 electoral college votes and as there are more Republican delegations, Trump would have won in the House of Representatives under the 12th Amendment.  The NT’s kept Trump from winning.  Someday, Trump will be gone, and NT’s like me won’t be forced to vote for Democrats.

Biden is the least bad of the Democrats.  When asked what they liked about Biden, the strongest response was “Not Trump.”  That is what I like the most about Biden, he’s “Not Trump.”  I had a gut feeling that Trump, alone of any American President, would not respect the will of the voters and would Goebbels-like try to steal the election using “The Big Lie” employing the equivalent of the Brown Shirts, which is why happened on 1/6 in the Capitol Riot.

If I lived in Texas 6, who would I vote for in the runoff?  There are two Republicans left, one Trump endorsed, and one not Trump endorsed.  I would vote for the least Trumpy candidate.

There were 147 members of Congress who promoted and voted for the Trump Big Lie.  I will be satisfied when each of them has been defeated.  That includes Arizona’s 4 Representatives, Andy Biggs, Paul Gosar, Debbie Lesko, and David Schweikert.  Just as Steve King was driven out in Iowa, these Representatives will be driven out in Arizona.  Operation 147.

America’s position in the world is weaker, thanks to your vote and the “least bad” Democrat’s fostering of the evil Iranian and Chinese regimes. Inflation is up, thanks to your vote. America is on the road to energy servility, thanks to  your vote. Jobs for minorities and those without college educations are shrinking thanks to your vote. And small minority business owners are being burned out of their businesses thanks to your vote.

And your defense of those outcomes? Proudly declaring the political equivalent of “She made me do it.” You remain proud of the evil you have unleashed.

I didn’t unleash the evil.  The Republican Party unleashed the evil when I nominated Trump in 2016, and then systematically refused to stand up to him.  When it becomes available, I suggest that you listen to “The Dispatch” April 30, 2021 podcast “E Pluribus Unum” which features the last “Republican” president George W. Bush.

When I joined the Republican Party it stood for a strong National Defense, limited government, free trade, optimism, rejection of cults of personality in the world, and inclusion.  I am still a member of the Party of Reagan; I respectfully decline to join the Party of Trump, and I withhold my vote from the Party of Trump.  Bring back the party of Romney, McCain, Bush, Dole, Ford, Goldwater, Eisenhower and Reagan, and I will be there.  But the Party of Trump?  No.

Free trade de-industrialized America and killed American jobs. “Free trade” is what got our enemy China into the position it is in. Thank you, Reagan and Bush.

Time after time he would advance the very same argument in the same words at the same point. And would be equally impenetrable—impenetrability, that was their chief trait! I know a guy a little like him. Daddy issues turned him bitter against everything manly that made his society comfortable, and his anger still surfaces in pretense like CoD and UFC. Never saw a man with more chickish preferences.

The only question for me is, is whether our case is a broken individual, or (as I suspect) a paid troll. Either way, his only hope is thru it. No leftist has ever been saved by convincing.

Still beating the wife, I see. And totally unapologetic about the damage you have done to the country.

However bad Trump was as an individual, he was – and remains – less dangerous to the country than the “least bad” of the Democrats. Racism is now taught in schools without Federal pushback thanks to your vote.

Reminds me too of something I found in a different thread:

    The Reticulator (View Comment):
It’s interesting that Biden has become what they all predicted Trump would be, yet they don’t seem to mind.  Maybe their criticisms of Trump were insincere.

Bush.

Still arguing the woman deserved beating. You voted for it. You own it.

No.

The party of Trump stood for a strong national defense, limited government, a strong economy (especially among minorities) optimism and inclusion. That is what you reject when you reject the party of Trump. Reagan and Eisenhower would be ashamed of you. Your petty-minded vindictiveness towards a man you dislike (Not Our Kind, Dear) has blinded you to the evil you have unleashed. You don’t like Trump. We get that. We also get that you have cancelled out a strong national defense, limited government, a strong economy (especially among minorities) optimism and inclusion to support a President who delivers pessimism and divisiveness – and wants to deliver all US citizen to a Woke Gulag.

    Own it.

    Seawriter,

I think that we will need to agree to disagree. I am doing what I think is right and you are doing what you think is right. I can’t and won’t abide by the “Big Lie” Trump and his 1/6 Brown Shirts.

    Gary

I see you’ve replaced the Charlottesville Delusion with the 1/6 Delusion.  (Although I won’t be surprised if you also continue with the Charlottesville Delusion in the future.)  But just replacing one delusion with another, doesn’t mean you’re getting better.
