In Modern Ireland, Practicing Catholicism Oulawed
Today the Gardai (Guardians of the Peace) took time out from not doing their job arresting drug dealers (Ireland is filled right now with cocaine) and instead focused on the few people who dared attend an SSPX Mass in Athlone, Ireland. The government in Ireland has claimed that public Mass is illegal, outside of a wedding or a funeral. Neither is baptism or confession with a priest allowed. Abortion is fine however, you can still get one of them in post-Catholic Ireland.

But the worst of the worst is not Ireland’s appalling government which produced this as a response to COVID. No in my mind it is Ireland’s Catholic Bishops (and to be fair other religious leaders). Just like with the abuse crisis which destroyed the faith for many in my generation, the bishops say nothing about the above. They whine, of course, but they do little else. They are terrified not just of the government but Ireland’s anti-Christian media. The Catholic laity and the brave priests who cater to them are on their own shall we say… some shepherds.
The apostasy in Ireland began with the bishops in the previous generations that covered up sex abuse and abused their power. Now their successors are allowing their churches to shut and their laity to receive few if any of the Sacraments. Enraged I am, I cannot tell you otherwise.
Cromwell would be proud. Alas as the excellent Englishpapist Twitter account pointed out though, not even the worst of the Brits (in past centuries) hate Catholicism like those who run modern Ireland. He’s right too.

The road is very long indeed that never turns again.
All I can do from here is pray, Paddy, but I’ll do that.
[Sigh.]
I am an agnostic, but this infringement on religious liberty is outrageous. I know Ireland doesn’t have our constitution. But the First Amendment was premised on G-d given rights that the state cannot morally infringe upon. And those rights do not exist only in America.
Actually Rodin it’s worse than outrageous.
Our constitution specifically outlaws the above. The religious protections are strong. In fact our one literally invokes Jesus by name to watch over Ireland.
It’s just the covid madness of government and the reactions of bishops which have brought this about
What’s the plan for Emerald Isle? Lockdown 4ever ? Hold out for 100% vaccinations?
Why are so many modern Christians wimps? Myself included.
Jesus has been called the Prince of Peace. But he by golly stood up for what he believed in. At considerable personal risk, obviously. He was a radical, who sacrificed for his cause – us.
We are comfortable. So we love peace, and avoid conflict.
Which makes modern Christians easy to manage & control.
Unlike our savior. He was not so easy to manage & control.
The sad thing is Paddy – don’t expect any real help from our dear Pope on this matter. Defending the real faith ain’t in his wheelhouse it seems. He will make a trip to Iraq to sell us out to Islam but lift a finger for Ireland Catholics- forget about it.
I don’t know what an SSPX mass is, but I know the significance of Clonmacnoise for Christianity. Not the same thing as Athlone, of course, but pretty close.
I see that Dr. Fauci, a Clinton, and some Big Tech reps are meeting at the Vatican to celebrate Karl Marx’s birthday* with Pope Francis. Ireland will not get their freedom until they choose to be free. (* not actually a bday party for Marx. I think it some kind of new age wellness thing or maybe Francis will announce that he is selling indulgences to those signing up for a vaccine passport.)
All you need is a little rebranding. Call yourself Muslims. Invoke God under the name “Allah,” which simply means God. And then they’ll leave you alone.
When someone asks “What would Jesus do?”, remind him that turning over tables and driving people out with a whip is one of the options.
I am so sorry, Paddy. I just can’t imagine this happening in a Western country. Especially one that has practiced deeply in the past.
He’s busy preparing for a big “health summit” – obviously not spiritual health. Paddy – it will be up to the people.
There was an episode a couple of years ago when an American Catholic bishop made some comments that enraged progressives. The media/political know-nothings thought it was an Irish bishop and there were hysterical condemnations by one and all, including Ministers of Government. Then the penny dropped and the story disappeared.
It is no coincidence that Ireland is an outlier in banning religious services and in coming down like a ton of bricks on Catholic pensioners at prayer. A case was taken in the High Court by the estimable businessmen Declan Ganley to challenge the constitutionality of the criminalising of public worship. When lawyers for the State were asked if such worship was in fact criminal they had no immediate answer and were given a few weeks to come up with one. Then the Government passed a Statutory Instrument (somewhat like an executive order) to make sure it was. Apparently, on a strict reading of the legislation,it is illegal to attend one’s own Church wedding!
I recognise one of of the congregation there but not the church so I think it’s where another friend of mine goes. I can’t remember what they’re called but they are sort of schismatic. The priest is a very impressive young man from New York. They were doing their best not to draw attention to themselves these past few months which makes me suspicious of and rather irritated by the loudmouth in the video at the start.
