The Day the Right Struck Back

I also remember in 2009, with Democrats holding every part of power, and conservatism a perpetual minority.  It seemed a pretty hopeless time.

But I was watching CPAC on tv, then this speech happened.

And there was suddenly hope.

Thanks, David.  I confess that when it was finished my wife and I were reminiscing a little and I suddenly felt like I was about to cry.  I think it was when she said they are still afraid of Rush, even after he is gone, because he told the truth about conservatives, and they can’t stand to have the truth be heard.

[EDIT: Sorry, the part of this that was political was inappropriate on the day of a man’s death and should have been left out.]

He had a genius for encapsulating and explaining.  Millions of people understand the issues solely because of Rush.  I often suspect that every time the MSM is surprised to see polls that show Republicans know a lot more about pending legislation, civic,s and politics than Democrats, I wonder how much of that was due to Rush.

There was a humanity there and respect for his listeners.  I recall listening to the show a long time ago and he made some surprisingly gratuitous nasty crack about former President Carter’s daughter Amy’s appearance.  The switchboard had lit up. His listeners were appalled.  He said ” my own mother called” to chew him out.  He apologized without reservation and praised the decency of his listeners and for keeping him in line.

His metaphors were often marvelous.  He pointed out in ’95 that when the MSM was running opinion polls about the popularity of Newt Gingrich it was telling.  He asked when have you ever seen an opinion poll about Jim Wright or any other Speaker before enow?  He said the polls were like those surveillance planes that take before and after pictures of aerial bombing targets.  They just want to measure whether their constant attacks on the new GOP majority and its leader were having the intended effect.  Brilliant.

Is it the pollen count in here this morning or what?  Second time something made my eyes all itchy while I was trying to read about Rush.

It was really my defining moment and me going all in on American Conservatism.

“I have learned Fox news is carrying this live.  So this is my first ever address to the Nation.”

I guess God has to give up his room to Rush now.

Just listened to his apocryphal joke.  Both Larry King and Rush passed this year, but I have no doubt of where Rush is right now.

But this speech is what I loved about Rush.  His optimism.  It isn’t much apparent these days in conservative media.  He believed in America and he believed in Americans.  After any disaster, he would say “just you watch-we will recover faster than anyone predicts and without government help.”  And we did.  So that is what we must remember.  Things are dark now and his passing has made it darker, but this country is worth fighting for and giving into despair is the worst thing we can do.

I listened to the first of nine parts and stayed to listen to all nine. Very inspirational! If you have time for nothing else Part 9 addresses hoping for the President (and his America-hating policies) to fail and remembering that we are not a minority. The President then was Obama, but it all still holds true today.

Yeah its very inspirational from a time that seemed a lot darker than this.

In 2 years Republicans took back the house in a landslide, and Obama didnt even have John Boehners phone number.

A post by  my cousin today:

I remember when I was a one man band with a truck and a part time helper in 1989 trying to build a business. I lived in that truck 14-16 hours a day. The radio in my truck was tuned to WGST 640 AM listening to Neal Boortz in the mornings and I listened the first day Rush Limbaugh started broadcasting. I didn’t know what to think about him for a while but he made me laugh and that was enough at the time. He made me think, he made me mad, he inspired me to not take everything in the media or politics as the sacred truth. He was flawed and so am I and so are you. RIP Rush Limbaugh. I’ll miss you.
