What If They Gave an Impeachment and Nobody Cared?
This week’s Twitter conversation focused on different stories each day. Monday was mostly Super Bowl reactions and making fun of David Hogg’s pillow start-up. Tuesday, it was Gov. Cuomo’s Covid scandal and the guy who logged into a Zoom court hearing with a cat filter. Wednesday, Joss Whedon was blasted for his cruel treatment of actresses and Disney fired Gina Carano from “The Mandalorian” for being conservative. Thursday, the Lincoln Project self-destructed and people canceled their Disney+ subscriptions. Friday, it was some Justin Timberlake scandal and Biden flack T.J. Ducklo threatening a reporter.
There was another big story this week that only the DC media and paycheck politicos seemed to care about. Apparently, the Senate is presiding over the trial of ex-President Trump. Reviewing the top Google searches of the week, nothing related to the impeachment made it to the top 10. Not “Trump,” not “Senate,” not “Constitution,” not “impeachment.” Here on the western edge of flyover country, no one has mentioned it in real life, not even at a long, robust, 20-person gathering I attended Thursday.
Much like Trump’s previous Senate impeachment trial, the general public could not care less.
Despite this, Beltway types insist that this is the most important story ever to swamp the banks of the Potomac. Yet it feels even more muted than the Ukraine impeachment, an event so earth-shaking that the Democrats forgot to mention it in their convention a few months later.
Is it me, or has America moved on?

It would be more correct to say we see no point in paying attention to this farce. Clown World will be Clown World, and everyone gets Canceled. Nothing to be done about it through the political arena right now, but we’ll remember who participated.

I tried to listen to a few minutes of the defense, but decided that even I (someone who is actually interested in arcane statements of the founding fathers) would rather listen to music at the moment and read the transcript of the proceedings later.
During the Kavanaugh hearings, I was watching in suspense. In this case, it really doesn’t seem to matter and feels predetermined. Honestly, I just got back from a lovely restaurant dinner and might have missed breaking news. I’d rather relish in my ability to go to a restaurant than fixate on political news. Still gotta check-in to Ricochet though…
The entire narrative surrounding Jan 6th was absurd, the unhinged voices blaming it on Trump were foolish, and ordinary Americans (as opposed to those beltway types) are smart enough to have known that from the start.
Their power is illegitimate, their motives, disingenuous, and their actions are fraudulent. Just like Joe Biden, and we’re not about to entertain blowhard arguments to the contrary.
The stories about people using gorilla glue on their heads and mouths should have made the top ten. Someone should start a TV Show called Political Bloopers! Then there is the flowery press Corp asking Biden what his valentine gift is to Jill, as they walked around cardboard hearts that they set up on the WH lawn – that was just precious.
As far as the faux impeachment trial, I could only stomach the Trump Attorneys’ defense part. I think they did a good job. Yes, the country is moving on (to stupid apparently). Interesting to watch the Lincoln Project and Cuomo implode – and it’s been less than a month!
To be precise, not even Google, with its slanted searches and manipulated algorithms, was able to get the moot court impeachment into the top ten. Though I’m sure the results Google did present were all enthusiastically supportive of the Democratic side.
I’d be interested to see what the other search engines, who can’t afford Google’s enormous staff of news suppressors, reveal.
The Democrats and their allegedly Republican fellow travelers have made one thing abundantly clear in the last 5 years: They wanted Trump gone from the White House. Ok. Mission accomplished. The electorate is ready to move on but the elected are not.
They see a danger in Donald Trump that must be eradicated. But instead of stating their real fears – that he posed a danger to their power – they made one up , namely that Trump was always the fascist-dictator-in-waiting. Always in waiting, though. Never actually doing anything, but waiting. God knows he had one opportunity after another handed to him, especially in the last year. Pandemic? Antifa and BLM burning down cities? What gifts for a man itching to seize dictatorial powers! The states are doing a horrible job! The President must take control! Send in the troops to enforce a lockdown! By God, it’s so dangerous we can’t even think about holding an election! Republican dictatorships always seem to suck at consolidating their power.

When 44 Senators voted that it was Unconstitutional, the handwriting was on the wall.

I’d prefer a Trump replacement, but it’s good to keep the possibility of Trump 2024 alive. At the moment we don’t have a good slate of replacement possibilities (with the possible exceptions of Ted Cruz and Rand Paul) so it’s best to keep Trump 2024 in the running.
It should be ignored. The only way impeachment/removal could have worked is if Pelosi delivered the articles the weekend following the riot and the Senate acted on it immediately. Instead, Pelosi took her sweet time. Once Trump left office on his own, removal was superfluous.

How could I have forgotten De Santis? Don’t know anything about Noem. Still it’s a good idea to keep Trump 2024 in the running just to keep everyone honest if for no other reason.
