The Truth They Cannot See: Addendum

Just to get a good visual reference of how far the median Democrat has lurched to the left, I added a central reference point to these graphics from Pew Research. It’s the yellow line in the graphics below. Pew did a study measuring the range of political beliefs held by members of each party. It began in 1994. In 1994 the median voters in each party were not too far apart. There was a broad spectrum of overlap. Notice that a large swathe of Democrats – almost half the party – are to the right of the marked midpoint line in yellow right over the “x” in “Mixed” in the legend. In fact, that central point almost coincides with the line denoting the median Democrat.

By 2017, those Democrats to the right of the midpoint have virtually disappeared. There is still a sizeable chunk of Republicans left of that midpoint. But it is Republicans that are routinely painted as extremists. That’s demonstrably false.

Yeah. Democrats have lurched at least 2 standard deviations to the Left.  Their current median was representative of about 10% of Democrats in 1994.

there is no common ground for “compromise” with them.

In 1994, to be a good Democrat, you needed only to vote for Democratic politicians and prefer that the welfare state continue to exist. In 2021, to be a good Democrat, you need to accept all tenets of the new avant-garde morality and commit yourself to the cultural revolution.

As recently as a decade ago, the major political fault line in the United States seemed to be between those optimistic about the ability of state power to solve problems and those skeptical of it. Now, the major fault line is between those who prefer the old social order and those who want to erect a new one in its place.

Many of the political clashes of old were about means. Now, they’re about ends.

Dixiecrats skew this.   Also, Democrats used to be anti-communist.

Thanks for the post and the graphic. At least on MSNBC Joy Reid appears to have take to calling Republicans extremists and terrorists. Now I will hold my thoughts on her as a person and just note her analyses has no real basis in data or theory. Your chart shows it, but history as well, Republicans, including evangelicals, have acquiesced to virtually every “progressive” goal– they are more accepting of gays, weed, politicians who have extra-marital affairs, politicians who don’t go to church, it’s the exact opposite.

My guess is comments about republicans being extremists or terrorists may help MSNBC build a lane but it is a lot of what is wrong with this country today. Trump is being impeached and tried for the “end result” of a series of “but for” statements where anyone of them is totally permissible under the 1A. Does MSNBC want that social/political standard of liability?

    EDIT

We can compromise with Democrats and lots of legislation still gets passed. Campaign finance laws need to be removed we’d get more moderates running. Also… hate to say it but Ginrich. We need to get rid of term limits on Committee chairs. It made parties and their leaders (often the big fundraisers with safe seats in the party) way too strong. We can reduce some polarization in the Congressional voting process.

This uses math, did we not see in the good Dr Bastille’s post that using math is blatantly racist?

Wonder what the same graph would show now.

The Democrats have moved lightyears to the Left since 2017.

Really.   2012 Obama looks like a moderate centrist by comparison.

How far has the Left moved to the far radical Left? Remember initially how we were told that we simply needed to approve of gay marriage? At the time, few people saw how much further the Left wanted to take us.

A friend of mine on FB was just notified about a memory she posted two years ago today:

From the Big Duh! file — So here is a tweet from some lady who wants future generations to be thankful: @Titania McGrath “Future Generations will thank us if we successfully eliminate Heterosexuality

    10:16Am Feb 08 2019

The reply of my friend, Elise Mattu four days later: “But Titania, if we eliminate future heterosexuality, how will there even be any future generations??”

Rational thinking is part of white supremacy according to the Smithsonian. The left now believes that “Your truth isn’t my truth…..I appeal to a higher truth” (ie lies that serve my interests).  The belief that there are “facts” is itself an attempt at oppression. One could go on for a long time. The biggest problem is that any graph of the media or academia will only include the far left part of the Democrat curve.

this was with Trump in office. It was removed.

When a Democrat calls you a “fascist” they are only announcing how close they are to Lenin and Stalin.
