No Disrespect Intended, Of Course

This morning I learned that Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks, has stopped the playing of the National Anthem at their home games; it was his decision alone. The anthem has not played for any of the 13 games played at home. The most shocking part of this decision is that he supposedly hasn’t received negative feedback. Or maybe fans just don’t care.

Cuban has backed players’ protests in the past. In June 2020, he supported players and coaches who refused to stand during the playing of the anthem:

‘Whether it’s holding their arm up in the air, whether it’s taking a knee, whatever it is, I don’t think this is an issue of respect or disrespect to the flag or to the anthem or to our country,’ Cuban said. ‘I think this is more a reflection of our players’ commitment to this country and the fact that it’s so important to them that they’re willing to say what’s in their heart and do what they think is right.’

I had to read the quotation twice. I think any player who behaved in this way fully intended to disrespect this country.

I would love to imagine that some fans will finally choose to demonstrate their love of country and begin to sing the anthem spontaneously at an upcoming game.

Take that, Mark Cuban. No disrespect intended, of course.

Update: After this post was written, the NBA released a statement asserting that all NBA teams must begin each game with the national anthem.

Jen Pissaki thinks Mark Cuban is just a neat guy.

White House Backs Mavericks Axing National Anthem Because US Fails ‘Often’ (thefederalist.com)

If Ms. Psaki is not proud of her country, she can blame herself.  Everything I do not like about my country today can be laid at the feet of people like her.

Just to refresh our memory, this is what the Marxist/Socialist/pick-apart-the-worlds-greatest-democratic-republic people don’t like.  Written in 1814 by Francis Scott Key who had been inspired by the sight of the American flag still flying over Fort McHenry after a night of heavy British bombardment:

Personally, I think somebody should take a boombox and go serenade Ms. Psaki a la John Cusack with it until she gains a little more respect for the country that gives her a podium to spew her hate-America woke pile of steaming excrement.  We can use this rendition of the anthem:

I think anytime is a good time to remind us there is a place called “land of the free and home of the brave” and we need to live up to it.  Sing it loud and proud.  Sing it often.  Psaki-and-Co. can sit down or take a knee while the rest of us stand up.  I’ll be hand over heart thinking of my nephew 2 LT Joshua getting ready to muster out across the ocean soon.

Every once in a while I contemplate making a Top Ten All Time Overrated List and Mark Cuban is always on it. IIRC he has a couple of patents- that all lost money. He sold out at the height of a stock bubble just in time b/c the purchaser of his company took a bath. It was one of the worst purchases of the roaring 90s. He just might be the luckiest man alive in the financial world. I just can’t decide how far down the list below Princess Di he belongs….

Oh my gosh, please please create this as a post. And invite addenda/substitutions in the comments. I would read the hell out of that.

Once you are put in a certain level, you never go too far below it. I once had a director at a large corporation who was a complete idiot. But he was a director, so they kept giving him director jobs. He got shuffled off to lead a worthless group, the “Americas Engineering” group. We already had a “Worldwide Engineering” group. I was sadly put in this group so I saw first hand what an idiot he was. Every week we had a staff meeting where the topic was, “what should be the purpose of Americas Engineering.” After a year we still hadn’t a clue, and not any projects of note were even started except by mistake and mostly without him being aware.

A colleague in Nashville called me up and had a problem, so I went there (with approval) and was living in Nashville for four months helping them with that problem. When our new design was installed and working (at one tenth the cost of their original plan that didn’t work), this manager showed up for the presentation and was surprised the project was my work. He never read a single email I had sent him or my direct boss.

When the layoffs came, our entire group was let go. We had been some of the best engineers in the company, but it was simpler to ax us than to weed out the lower performers in other groups.

The idiot director got a high paying job right away because he had “director” at the major company on his resume. I’ll bet it took a while for them to realize he was an idiot too.

I don’t know much about Mark Cuban. The few times I’ve seen him on tv he impressed me as being a punk. But it won’t matter how many times that punk fails. He’s on tv. He’s well known. He has money. He will never know hunger.

Success doesn’t consist of doing things well. That is rarely rewarded. Success comes from social interaction despite competence. Mark Cuban is likely the type of guy that is effective at rewarding and punishing people and gaining their loyalty.

The Mavericks were 43 wins, 32 losses last year. He still owns them. He’s still rich. No one cares. He’s not judged by competence, he’s judged by his personality.

    And now by his patriotism.

Some people will remember this offense.

The problem is, if you find out that he’s more suited for low-paid grunt work than for director work (never mind that he’s probably even less competent at assembly line work or janitorial work than he is at being a director) you can’t really kick him out of the high paying classification. Because if you did that, it would set a precedent, and who knows who among the director class would be next. You really don’t want to go there, do you?

    so do.

I saw the prospect of this happening in one organization. I saw a City Manager tolerate a Director who was awful to his people, and he just wouldn’t fire him. Although I suspect he would have promoted or hired someone just as nasty. The psychology of this stuff is mind boggling!

It is. And what is worse is that this costs the salary of the Director, the brain power of the people who leave rather than tolerate him, the costs of HR or legal department time to deal with any fallout he creates, and all the noise he creates in the signal that is supposed to be productivity.

What businesses need is a hybrid consultant/axe-man to clear out these problems. Deadwood is bad; diseased wood is far worse.

Ties that bind become weakened if not re-tied regularly.  And with the Left, you give them an inch they take miles and miles.  I view saying the pledge and singing the anthem not as forced dogma, but more a reminder of what we aspire to be as a country: land of the free with liberty and justice for all.
