Anna Egorova was a Soviet attack pilot who wrote a vivid and interesting memoir.  When she was a child, her mother would pray, ”kneeling before the icons, as she firstly listed all our names, the names of her children, begging God for health and wisdom for us, and then at the end of each prayer repeating: ‘God save them from slander!’ Back then in my childhood, I didn’t understand that word…”

After her brother was taken away as an Enemy of the People, she understood.

That sounds interesting. I might add it to my reading list.

Now I’m trying to remember the movie that stars Dmitry Dyuzhev (the guy who played the “bad” monk in Ostrov) and the young woman who played Betsy in Stilyagi as one of the female pilots.

Ah, here it is. There is a version on YouTube with English subtitles and one without.  It’s not a great movie, but better than the average run of war movies under Putin. I was able to watch the whole thing, which is not something I can often manage with Putin-era movies. I see there has been a sequel, which I have not seen.  This one came out in 2013. Maybe somebody would like to identify the planes in use. Seems to me the ones used by the female pilots were some old, slow clunkers, or maybe I’m thinking of a different war movie showing female pilots.

Looks like it might be a decent series.  Looks like one of the planes in use was the Yak-3…I believe some of the female pilots did fly this airplane, though more of them flew the Poplikarpov biplane and the Shturmovik ground-attack plane.  The Yak-3 was apparently a very good fighter, and there are quite a few of them around today…here’s one currently for sale.

A once famous radio preacher J. Vernon McGee once said how young people start a movement and church that is going to be different and fresh from the current status quo.  They are not going to be stuck in the stale legalism of the past and be a part of something fresh.

Soon, they realize that they have children and need a children’s program.  And they need to figure out how to support missionaries.  They grow large, and they need a place to meet.  Now they need to hire someone to maintain property.  You get the idea.

Before they know it, they look exactly like the entrenched church they were reacting against.
