Pining for Live Events from Last Year

Last year, just before the whole WuFlu thing blew the world into insanity, I sang in a concert. It was a lovely concert, an anniversary event for the founding of this choir which is perhaps the finest of its kind in the world. The videos are unedited, but the sound is wondrous to my ears.

The thought of such a concert today is somehow scandalous. Choral singing has been hit very hard by COVID. It was a full house and a magical evening.

I miss that.

Lovely.  I just listened to a small sampling and emailed the links to myself so I can listen to them tomorrow when I’ll be driving for 7 or so hours.  In your direction, as a matter of fact.

iWe, you’ve entered the phase of being worth the whole price of a Ricochet subscription. Thanks for a beautiful sidelight into something so recent and so long ago.

The loss of shared in-person experiences has been devastating not just to the arts, but the idea of the arts. The necessity of the arts. There are those who look at the idea of a choir on stage as a super-spreader event, and insist we retreat to our bolt-holes and view the world from the safety of Zoom. They have a peculiar moral authority granted by the institutional zeitgeist. To hell with that

Beautiful.  A capella large group is not easy, and there’s nothing quite like male voice harmonies.  The young man (Jake?) did so well…your director was wonderful making sure the choir didn’t overpower him, helping him bow.

    Is it all Hebrew?

Good choirs manage to never overpower a soloist – the conductor is fantastic. I have sung with him, on and off, since 1995.

    Is it all Hebrew?

Yes – different music from the liturgy. The music was composed between the 19th century and the late 20th.

I love an all male choir too. I love listening to Russian Orthodox liturgy for just that reason. Also the Dominicans from the House of Studies in DC and the Hillbilly Thomists.

For four glorious weeks in October I was able to have socially distanced, masked rehearsals with the 25% of my choir that was willing to come to rehearsal.  Many others Zoomed in from home.

Even with all its challenges, it was great to hear them sing.

    Yes, it was muffled…..

Then the numbers spiked in Baltimore, and management ended the rehearsals.

Now we are back under 5% positivity rate again, so we’ll see.

My mother loved to play records by the group 16 Singing Men when I was growing up.

“The Love of God” has always been one of my favorites (Christian faith).
