Brian Kelly Of Notre Dame Creates Some Controversy
From Sports illustrated:
“I’m not sure we’ll play in the playoffs if the parents can’t be there,” Kelly said, via ESPN, during a call with reporters ahead of the ACC championship game. “Why would be we play if you can’t have families at the game? If you can’t have families at bowl games, why would you go to a game where your families can’t be part of it? What’s the sense of playing a game in an area of the country where nobody can be part of it?”
There is a very good chance that Notre Dame will still make the playoffs even if they lose to Clemson today. The final decision to play in an empty Rose Bowl would be made after ND consults their players if they are selected as one of the top four teams. There is no reason that the game couldn’t be played in Arizona, or Dallas.
Kelly questioned why the Rose Bowl must be held in Pasadena and said he would be in favor of moving it to another site.
“Why can’t it be the Rose Bowl in Las Vegas? Why can’t it be the Rose Bowl in another town? Where’s the flexibility? The one thing these kids have been is incredibly flexible,” Kelly said, via The Athletic’s Pete Sampson.
On Tuesday night, CFP executive director Bill Hancock said the group hoped the California government will ease its COVID-19 stadium protocols and players’ families will be able to attend the Rose Bowl.
“Maybe they [CFP] need to spend a little less time on who the top four teams are and figure out how to get parents into these games because it is an absolute shame and a sham if parents can’t be watching their kids play,” Kelly said. “My kids have been on campus since June. They haven’t seen their families very much at all. They’ve had to fight through COVID, some of them have had COVID. They can’t be around their families for Christmas, and you’re going to tell me we’re going to have a playoff and maybe one site can have families and the other can’t? Please.
“Somebody’s got to wake up in that room and figure this out or you might as well call this the professional league.”
Clemson coach Dabo Swinney agreed that the Rose Bowl could be played in a different venue with families in attendance.
“It makes no sense to me to put a bunch of kids on a plane and fly them all the way to California to play in an empty stadium,” Swinney said, via The Athletic‘s Grace Raynor. “That makes zero sense.”
Swinney added that he feels this way regardless of whether Clemson lands a CFP spot.
At least Coach Kelly, and Coach Swinney have the decency to try and include the families of their player’s if they would like to see their sons try to win a championship.

They are correct but Kelly is still a dolt. All ND cares about is $$$$$$ and trying to act like he cares about his people given his history is disgusting.
But yeah, having this in LA is totally idiotic.
Newsom and Garcetti have decided that crowds are bad. Very well; hold the game elsewhere. It’s a win-win.
(Note to Gavin and Eric – just because it is already built doesn’t mean anyone is coming back.)
Glad to see this, it’s about time someone with some influence talks sense in public.
Good on both coaches, may thier tribe increase
Watching the game now and it looks like ND will be out of the playoffs, most likely.
Brian Kelly is a good man.
Won’t happen because of the money (Clemson’s already canned their track & field and cross-country teams due to lack of revenue). I guarantee if either coach tries to boycott the game, they’ll be “suspended” and one of the coordinators appointed as acting . . .
And the Rose Bowl as a BSC semifinal game is now the Randall Mill Road Bowl, or the Jerry Bowl, or something like that, since the game has been moved from Pasadena to Arlington, Texas on Jan. 1. AT&T Stadium just got finished hosting the first round of the Texas high school football state finals with fans in the stands (one of the eight games got COVID-delayed to the first week of January and the big schools play there Jan. 15-16), so barring some massive surge over the next nine days, the BCS game will have fans there, even if it doesn’t have Notre Dame, after the egg they laid Saturday against Clemson.
No game in the Rose Bowl this season and SC, after losing to Oregon Friday, has announced that it will decline any bowl invitations.
Has there been a documented superspreader event yet? None of the political rallies or marches, none of the urban riots caused an uptick that I find. I can recall experts tut-tutting that some irresponsible GOP governor allowed 400,000 bikers to gather unmasked for a week in Sturgis then not admitting they were wrong in predicting a big surge in cases when that did not happen. It did not happen even in SD or in neighboring MN (where they really tried hard to find a link to Sturgis).
Has any Governor ordered a follow-up study (a) to ascertain whether it can be shown there was even a delay in the spread;(b) to quantity the immediate and long-term economic cost of these measures, and (c) to identify whatever trends are emerging as to adverse outcomes from the “prevention” measures imposed?
We have shut down all normal life at the recommendations of people who have been consistently wrong. Why is Neil Ferguson of Imperial College not wearing tar and feathers? When Fauci tried to claim that the entirely predictable Gompertz curve decline in cases in NYC was instead due to Cuomo following Fauci & CDC guidelines (this after Fauci’s useless flip flop guidance changes on the likely severity of COVID, the efficacy of masks and his entirely portfolio of ineffectual actions) why is he accorded any respect? Why is he employed? It is one thing to be dishonest, another to be incompetent —but can it really be OK to be both?
You can lecture me about “the science” if you actually test your hypotheses as to whether nine months of “prevention” measures worked. Everybody (a) who can’t do their job using Zoom and/or (b) is not a government employee may be bankrupt soon if not already—and Granny is still dying. And the operant recipe is still to do more of the same but pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.
The comeback from people defending this atrocity is “well, can you prove it would not have been worse if we had not done this stuff?” Sounds kinda sciency but it requires us to ignore the fact that the bug spread in EXACTLY the way epidemiology would predict and if that classic curve was not disrupted in any way, then the bug was limited only by natural resistance and the reduction in suitable targets/carriers and not by anything else. The bug spread and killed in identical patterns in similar regions in exactly the same time frame despite different interventions and different timing of similar interventions. By comparing jurisdictional apples to apples we have a clear picture of whether or not ANYTHING worked. If I am wrong, please show me a state or country graph where there was a noticeable change as a result of a lockdown, mask order or combinations of interventions.
”Governor, here is a graph of COVID in our state. Please point to where the cases/deaths declined as a result of what you ordered us to do. Please provide the science you relied upon to limit bar hours, to restrict and even kill small stores but not big ones. Explain what science called for closing schools despite the unambiguous position of US pediatricians. Please show the contact tracing data that quantifies the risk of restaurant openings. Then explain why Swedish restaurants stayed open with no comparable change in the rates, curves, duration or timing of the incidence of COVID. In other words, Governor, put up or shut up and don’t even try to cherry-pick the studies, we’ve got a fuller list.”
The Rose Bowl game has been moved from Pasadena to Arlington, Texas (Dallas Cowboys home field). The City of Pasadena has the rights to the name “Rose Bowl”. At the present moment it’s unclear if Pasadena will allow the College Football committee will be able to use the Rose Bowl logo. The CFP and the Rose Bowl committee had tried to negotiate a agreement that would let the families attend the game in the 95,000 seat stadium, but they were turned down by state officials. The NFL 49ers are playing their home games in Glendale, Arizona due to the fact that the state will not allow them to use their stadium.
The 1942 Rose Bowl Game was moved to the East Coast after the attack on Pearl Harbor. The 1942 game was the 28th Rose Bowl Game.
Thanks for that information @dougwatt, but I am still a little confused. Which state officials turned down the Rose Bowl committee’s request to allow families to attend? Was it the California Rose Bowl people or the Texas folks? If the former, who cares? I don’t even know why they bother calling it the “Rose Bowl”. Just call it the Bowl Championship Semi-Final at Arlington Stadium.
Only Trump rallies and church services – documented by the MSM, of course . . .
This year, they should rename the Rose Bowl to the COVID Bowl in honor of California’s restrictions . . .
State of California officials refused to allow parents of the players to attend the game, from the Washington Times:
They moved the game to Texas – end of problem!
Thanks. That makes more sense to me.
The City of Pasadena owns the rights to “Rose Bowl?” Fine. They own the rights to the answer to a future trivia question. As Joni Mitchell once told us, “you don’t know what you got ’til it’s gone.”
I’d like to see this game called “The Hose Bowl,” with a pantyhose manufacturer picking up the tab for naming rights. This would make fun of Pasedena and generate revenue for the company, the schools, and the state of Texas . . .
