Dan Rather Medals for News and Guts

I see that the University of Texas has inaugurated a journalism award named after Dan Rather. For those too young to remember, Dan Rather is infamous for attempting — unsuccessfully — to sway the 2004 Presidential race in favor of Democratic candidate John Kerry by launching a smear attack against Republican candidate President George W. Bush based on an obviously fraudulent document allegedly produced in the 1970s but in fact created using Microsoft Word.

In a similar spirit, I’d like to suggest a few more honors the learned folk at UT might like to bestow.

Jeffrey Epstein Award for Service to Minors

O.J. Simpson Exceptional Husband Award

Harvey Weinstein Award for Excellence in Relationships

Jussie Smollett Recognition for Accuracy in Crime Reporting

BLM/Antifa Award for Urban Small Business Support

Leo DiCaprio Megayacht Award for Environmental Sensitivity

Twitter/Facebook Prize for Support of Free Speech

As you know, keeping parody ahead of reality is hard.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo was given the Edward M. Kennedy Institute Award for Inspired Leadership following his controversial response to the coronavirus pandemic.

    Washington Examiner, December 10.

    Per The Federalist, Cuomo tweeted,

“I learned about humanity, leadership and putting people first from the great Senator Ted Kennedy.”

As a newspaper columnist (perhaps James Taranto of the Wall Street Journal) used to say,

“Mary Jo Kopechne could not be reached for comment.”

Here’s a young Anderson Cooper on the TV game show “To Tell The Truth.” He’s one of the impostors … Note the ease with which he tells lies on national television:

Don’t forget the Baghdad Bob award for journalistic integrity. Of course, we couldn’t possibly narrow it down to a single winner this year.

I thought it perfectly appropriate.  If Mary Jo had lived she’d be old enough now to die in a New York nursing home.
