In Staten Island, The Beginning of a Popular Resistance to Lockdowns

A bar owner declared that he would no longer put up with arbitrary totalitarian state edicts that would destroy his business, and called on the people of America to take to the streets to protest.

An insurrection against these totalitarians is now the only remaining hope of America.

Stay tuned. If the owners of my hardware store in Southwest Ohio decide to join the movement, I will be on the streets of Loveland, Ohio to join them.

In Staten Island as I write this, the revolution is underway.  People are in the streets. Pray that it will spread. They can’t arrest us all.

Editor’s note: Here’s a popular video making the rounds about what’s happening in Staten Island:

Off to a bad start.  I wonder if he has friends…

The co-owner of a bar on Staten Island which declared itself an ‘autonomous zone‘ after its liquor license was yanked over COVID-19 lockdown violations was arrested and perp-walked out of the business in handcuffs on Tuesday night.

According to Deputy Sheriffs, Mac’s Public House general manager and co-owner Daniel Presti was charged with several offenses, including obstructing governmental administration, for continuing to operate the establishment despite being in an ‘orange zone’ – where indoor dining is not allowed and there is a 10 p.m. dining curfew, according to NY1.

I really do want to see how well this authoritarianism goes down with a lot of the Biden voters when Joe’s the guy in office, and if states and cities not in lockdown mode have similar COVID numbers and way better economic numbers than those areas going through the total shutdown farce.

The main reason Andrew Cuomo became a hero to these types wasn’t because he was doing things right, but because he was doing things the opposite of what Trump was saying states should do and for Trump-haters, that made backing him a symbol of #TheResistance. How long does the zeal for totalitarian governance stay in place if infection/mortality rates  are no better in deep Blue states 4-5 months from now than they are in Red states, or if their numbers are even worse, despite those draconian measures?

That’s when you may see protests like this one on Staten Island move from the Red areas of deep Blue states to deep Blue areas of those same states, like northern Brooklyn or Manhattan. With Trump gone, it’s going to be a lot harder for the Cuomos of the political world and their media allies to continue to gin up the hate by trying to blame everything on Mitch McConnell, the lone GOPer with any power in Washington (assuming the Republicans get at least one win on Jan. 3 in Georgia). Their lockdowns suddenly will have to stand on their own merits, based on effectiveness and comparison to areas with different policies (and if you’re a authoritarian governor operating next to a Red state, as with the case of New Mexico vs. Texas, the ability to justify shutting down things like restaurants and supermarkets may be even harder to maintain, when a contrary option is on display just across the state line).

I read a troubling article (dated November 30, 2019) this evening: “Evictions Have Led to Hundreds of Thousands of Additional Covid-19 Cases, Research Finds”:

Expiring state eviction bans have led to hundreds of thousands of additional coronavirus cases, new research finds, raising alarm about what will happen when the national eviction moratorium lapses next month.

During the pandemic, which at one point was estimated it would displace as many as 40 million people, 43 states, plus Washington, D.C., temporarily barred evictions. Many of the moratoriums lasted just 10 weeks, while some states continue to ban the proceedings.

Forty million people displaced through evictions! Covid-19 is the least of the problems these unfortunate people are facing. I hope the protests sweep the nation.

As to the bar owner, posting support on his FB page is not going to help him.  Getting in the street in front of his bar with 50,000 other citizens demanding his release, as Mark implies, will.  Making a crowd funding account to cover his expenses will.  Coordinating another 30 or 40 dining areas in one precinct to all open simultaneously will.

The merits of the shutdown are not the issue here; our extraordinary placid, whipped response to it is.

This is my big concern.  How will LE react as they continue to be called in to make arrests such as these?  Right now, they are doing what they see as their duty in making these arrests.  But as the rules become more restrictive, more repressive, and more idiotic, what will they do?

The fact that they think arresting people at their dinner table is “their duty” is what really bothers me.  I’d love to see what any of those here on Ricochet that have LE backgrounds think about this topic.

    Buckpasser,

When writing the comment, I wrestled with the “duty” phrase.  I really do not know what they see as their duty.  I assumed the best of the LEO, and so wrote it as “doing their duty”.  Perhaps a better way to put it is that they were told to arrest the guy, so they did their jobs.  At some point, if they are continually required to make such arrests, I hope they start to question what their job really is.

Totally agree that I’d like to hear from some members with LE experience on this topic.

Actually if anything, I think the sham elections are going to end.  The election has exposed them to a degree and we already see new movements rising to against them.

I made these comments about who will enforce these restriction in https://ricochet.com/831808/fighting-words/comment-page-3/#comments

“Here’s the problem for the far left. Who is going to enforce their agenda? That is, who are these progressive democrats going to turn to – to arm and “make” everyone comply with their rules. They will go after our collective pocket books, and that seems to be the initial plan, but that will only get you so far. Sooner or later if these tyrants want to get anything done, they’ll have to “bust some heads.” Watch for who will be designated “head buster,” for that will be the time conservatives will have to decide whether it’s better to die on your feet – or live on your knees.

Yes, Antifa/BLM/Et al are well organized, funded, and do great street theater for MSM. However, to paraphrase Orwell’s comments about Kipling’s poem “Tommy” referring to soldiers guarding civilians that: “People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf,” and update it for our purposes to say “Tyrants can only sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.” The “mobs” are not going to do the hard and deadly counter-insurgency action that will be required to go state-by-state, city-by-city, town-by-town, street-by-street, house-by-house to find, disarm and subdue possibly 74 million insurgents/rebels/freedom fighters – whatever.

This will require a well equipment and professionally train and lead military and police force to have any chance of bringing the “deplorables” to heel. As I see it, with the bulk of the U.S. military force made up of personnel from fly over country, it is going to be difficult to turn these assets against their own kind. I believe Brock O and crew understood this and began the process of purging the military forces back in 2009, starting with the officer class. The “de-fund the police” movement is just a continuation of the process. My best guess is the current military and police structure is not going away. The designated “head busters” will come from there.”

The COVID hype would end tomorrow, if Talking Heads were deemed non-essential, and News Shows were allowed on only 45 minutes a day per station, Then  these powerful and influential people might begin to  worry about being in a bread line like everyone else.
