You Want Unity? Seriously?
It’s like asking a person who has gone through four years of unjustified, ceaseless torture to join up with you in running the country. Let’s be unified?
I don’t know whether to laugh or cry.
First, let me say that I’m not a person who takes revenge, which I define as exacting punishment for a wrong in a resentful spirit. But I do feel motivated to avenge this corrupt election: I do want to inflict punishment as an act of retributive justice. At one time revenge and avenge meant the same thing, but I think the subtle difference is relevant in this situation.
Joe Biden is not justified in asking for unity. In the last four years, the Democrats and the media have scorned the President and the Presidency. They have lied, distorted, and planned ceaselessly, every single day, to destroy President Trump. Attacking the President, his family, his staff, and his supporters with such derision and hatefulness does not warrant any effort on the part of the Republicans to come anywhere close to trying to unify the government. In effect, the Democrats violated every code of integrity, decency, and truthfulness in their efforts. Political parties always have a certain amount of feuding that happens, but to begin attacking the President before he even took office is detestable. There needs to be accountability.
In addition to choosing to avenge the President’s treatment, I think we need to understand what Biden means by unity: don’t get in our way. He can’t possibly believe that the Republicans will support a far-Left agenda. Joining in his plans to destroy the country economically by trying to initiate climate change legislation, increase taxes, continue to abuse our education curricula, remove tariffs with the Chinese, pass onerous regulations against businesses—there is no way that can happen with our complicity. It not only would eliminate the economic growth that occurred during Trump’s time in office, but would take the country into an economic tailspin.
But Biden’s using the word “unity,” when other words might have been more appropriate is a “tell.” If he had said cooperation or negotiating in government, I might have had a different reaction. But Biden is addressing the entire country, more specifically Republicans. He’s talking to us, the citizens on the Right:
He wants us to make believe that the last four years never happened.
He wants us to be willing to put aside our differences and support their agenda.
He wants us to forget those who insulted, attacked, and harassed us, even making sure that people lost their jobs.
He wants us to make believe that there is no cancel culture, that it’s okay if the mainstream media continues to berate us, that we should be helpful and cooperative, just like the Republicans of old.
You destroyed any possibility of our working with you. You have no idea how deplorable we can be.
No matter who finally wins the election, you will lose.

Well said. As I commented elsewhere we are not going to see “unity” no matter who wins this Presidential election. The next 4 years will be worse than the last four.
The biggest weakness in Biden and the Dems’ hand now is that their policies — the new normal — have been shown to be unnecessary. The policies of the Trump administration over the last four years demonstrate that everyone (importantly, including blue collar workers of all colors, especially in “flyover” country) can participate in the rising economic tide. The “magic wand” that Obama claimed didn’t exist actually is readily available. Trump’s economic policies will either continue (under Trump or Harris/Biden), or they will be the rallying cry for a resurgent GOP in 2022 and 2024. We will be able to ask, with an easy comparison: are you better off now than you were four years ago?
The peace and comity that Biden’s selling will not last the end of this year at best. He’s not known for his cool head, articulateness, or thoughtful demeanor. The press may blame others for Biden’s heating things up, but things will continue to burn hot.
We are not returning to quiet and normal. Not for a long time. Probably not for a decade or more.
I agree, @nocaesar, well said! And I didn’t say we should never support their legislation, but only if it meets our principles and genuinely helps this country. I just don’t see that happening.
When the left calls for unity what they are really saying is: “Sit Down. Shut up. Do as your told (by your betters).”
It has been said many times, but this is not the time to “go wobbly.”
I will leave the Republican party if they do that. Trump worked too hard to drain the swamp, @joelb, and I have also said many times myself, it’s time to stand up for what is right for this country. No more “Mister Nice Guys”!
First, I have not heard the Fat Lady singing yet. We need to allow the President enough time to pursue the fraud claims and provide the Courts with enough evidence of the voting corruption. This is for all future elections. We must have fair, just and standard election results and counting, or democrats will always win by cheating as they have for decades. If you can’t stomach fighting for Trump, at least fight for the Republic.

If we have Biden, agreed. Biden will make even Jimmah Carter look good. And it took 4 years of Jimmy to get eight years of Ronald Maximus. We have until 2024 to unite around Trump 2024 or a fighter like Trump who is less off-putting to too many potential voters. Whoever it is will still have to win a primary and that will require someone more like Trump than Romney.
I still think he should wish for a pony while he’s at it.
I fully support your call for the investigation of corruption, @columbo. (I did end by saying, whoever wins the election.) But even if Trump wins, all Republicans should be put on notice that this isn’t about who they like or don’t like. We will have almost lost this country (and may still), and as one governor snarkily said to Trump, Republicans need to put on their big boy pants.

I agree, but it’s most important to be effective. So we cannot mistake tactics for strategy. It is critical to have the discipline to maintain a smiling face while patiently waiting for the opportune time to stick in the shiv. Or be the iron fist in the velvet glove. There is a rising generation in the GOP who, so far, have demonstrated guts, determination, and foresight. There will be times to be patient and times to be impatient. But at all times we must be ruthless.
I am a seventh-generation product of the Establishment. Because of that I have always had an instinctive level at which I would pull my punch for fear of damaging the furniture. No more. I am uninterested in being fair. I want to win, and will use whatever means needed. I care about the collateral damage as much as the Democrats do. This is a very new dynamic for me. I’ve always been willing to fight hard, but it was always: fight hard, play fair, and be a good sport. I was raised that way before I was born. That attitude, wavering over the past few years, is completely gone, and replaced with a determination to win, using whatever means — other than against God — necessary.
I so appreciate your describing your personal changes, and to a degree I can identify with them, @nocaesar. I see myself as strong and direct, but rarely chose to fight; I always wanted to find a way to work things out. I think generally I am able to do that in my own life. But I’m not in Congress. I do think that Republicans can use decorum and politeness, but I expect them to fight when necessary. No excuses.

Right. Cocaine Mitch, the murder turtle, is a perfect exemplar for us. He is a great yin to Trump’s yang (or is it the other way?). Dan Crenshaw, Tom Cotton have different styles, but are equally effective. Ever since Ted Cruz stopped trying to be Reagan during the 2016 primary, and has just been himself he’s been quite effective.
I like all of them a lot, and think they have real potential. They all can contribute a lot to our future!

I was thinking very seriously that, although I cannot speak from experience, this must be sort of what a battered spouse feels like knowing the son of a gun promising roses will hit or cheat on you again, barring an internal transformation, because that’s the way they roll.
I don’t know about the analogy, @mim526; we don’t have a choice about staying in the game. But I sure do feel beaten up, after all the years that the Dems have abused the system.

This year and this election has been something I can’t even find the words for. I am Catholic and am especially disheartened that 3 of my 4 children (23, 28, 31) voted for Biden. It especially hurts for me because I think that a Catholic cannot in good conscience vote for a man and ticket that is so openly pro-abortion. It is extremely hard to unite with them. I pray we will get through this, both as a family, and hopefully as a country.
But we must never give in to our principles or beliefs.
Certain True Conservatives will continue to assure us that Joe is a paragon of “character” and a fine defender of all that is American.
I’m so sorry about your children’s choice. I hope the time will come when you will come together with these choices. I can only imagine how painful it must be.
In a nation of 330 million people, there isn’t going to be very much unity. Americans subscribe to different religious beliefs, different hobbies, different priorities. So, Biden’s call for unity is just rhetoric. It’s a performance.
Biden is trying to convince those mushy middle swing voters, “Come on over the Left side of the street. We’re the nice folks. We aren’t those mean guys on the Right.”
But eventually the gloves are going to have to come off if Biden is serious about jacking up taxes on the American people.
As for the Donald Trump’s voter fraud argument, the answer is really hiding in plain sight. It’s hard to lose an election, or so I would imagine. So, if one has lost an election, there aren’t very many options. One of them is to announce publicly, “I tried very hard, but I lost.” Another option is to say, “My opponent cheated.” Donald Trump has chosen the 2nd option.
Trump might be able to convince Sean Hannity that Biden stole the election. Somehow the Democrats stuffed ballots in Pennsylvania handing the election to Joe Biden while at the same time electing a Republican majority to the Pennsylvania state legislature.
Wow. That’s some incompetent ballot stuffing. Redistricting is just around the corner and if the Democrats were going to bother to do some ballot stuffing, they would be incompetent to not mark those ballots with a check mark next to Democrat candidates’ names.
Why stuff the ballots in Nebraska’s 2nd congressional district for Joe Biden but also provide votes to Don Bacon, the Republican candidate for Congress in Nebraska 2nd? Same in the New Hampshire state legislature. Why give Biden an 8 point victory while electing a Republican majority in the state legislature to cooperate with a Republican governor?
Why give Georgia’s 16 electoral votes to Biden while not giving US Senate candidate Jon Ossoff (Democrat) a majority and thus the Senate seat?
I think the Trump folks simply want to solicit more money from the MAGA crowd, so that Trump’s attorneys and consultants and make more money and pay for their vacation homes on the Gulf coast.
