Recommended by Ricochet Members Created with Sketch. Facebook Cancels the Dangerous Bret Weinstein

Bret Weinstein, the former biology professor hounded out of Evergreen College in Washington State, tweets:

“I have been evicted from Facebook. No explanation. No appeal. I have downloaded “my information” and see nothing that explains it. We are governed now in private, by entities that make their own rules and are answerable to no process. Disaster is inevitable. We are living it.”

To be clear, Bret Weinstein’s politics are center-left and he, like Jordan Peterson, considers himself to be a classical liberal. Apparently the censors at Facebook, some of whom have been recently revealed as Chinese nationals, have determined that Professor Weinstein’s views are just too dangerous for other Facebook subscribers to read.

Here is the “vile” “enemy of the people Weinstein discussing his views with Dave Rubin sometime ago when he was elevated to celebrity status after he was labeled a racist by a woke student mob at Evergreen College.

Thanks…could have been my unconscious bias in invoking the name of a horrible slave owner and white patriarchal figure.

He was also a guest recently on Walk-Ins Welcome.

He has interesting things to say, and I hate what happened (is still happening, apparently) to him and his wife. But I have to admit it bugs me when people like this remain resolutely on the left. It is the left that does this, not the right.

I know. I’ve got a few center-left friends who persist in being, well, center-left, even as they decry cancel culture and the suppression of speech. But as long as they decry cancel culture an the suppression of speech…I count them allies. A dedication to the pursuit of truth and and an insistence on facts …will end up leading them away from the left. If —thanks to the influence of those still-doggedly-Democrats—- the Democratic party became more center and less left, it shall be an improvement.

But that doesn’t work if they just vote for whatever Democrat candidate is put before them.

I’d agree for the most part. To be fair, there have been some on the Never Trump Right that have beat up pretty good (metaphorically speaking). In my/our defense, we haven’t tried to shut anyone down or get them fired but I feel perfectly guilt-free in discounting, disregarding ,mocking, ignoring, laughing at… much of what they write.

And taking a bit of satisfaction – schadenfreude? – when Lefties get cancelled by other Lefties?

Why are these people still on the left, exactly?

If he is Center Left, he should join the Right, and stop trying to split the middle. He should have been more active on his side, while they were busy attacking ours. I have never heard of him, so I cannot say he was doing a good job defending the Right.

You don’t remember the dust-up at Evergreen College? If I remember correctly, he refused to stay off campus when black students declared an “all black” day. He was castigated for it.

Obviously, it’s unacceptable and unforgivable to be against black racism.

He did more standing up when his line was crossed than a lot of others have. So I’ll give him credit for not rolling over and taking a principled stand even if everything in his principles kind of ripened the ground for it.

Day without Whites. It was a reverse an annual Day without Blacks. Instead of some folks choosing to stay home, some folks decided that other folks would not be tolerated for a day. Insane!

I suspect it has something to do with his economic policy preferences, as well as a desire to avoid associating with post-liberal and nationalist types on the right (Patrick Dineen, Sohrab Ahmari, Michael Anton, etc.).

    Did not remember his name.

Did he lose his job? Was he beaten? He helped to make these people possible. His hands are red with blood as are the hands of all Liberals. They groomed and created these monsters.

Whenever I watch Bret Weinstein, it’s clear to me that he is wild-eyed radical and possibly a covert fascist masquerading as a left-of-center progressive who, when not dog-whistling to legions of rabid right-wing conservatives is demonstrating to anyone who watches him how crazed and unhinged he is. Clearly this is what the brave and courageous censors witnessed which is why this enemy of the people should be cancelled.

The text above is satire but my guess may be overheard in Portland, Oregon coffee shops.

Totally agree. He gets stiffed by a group of Marxist students attending a prestigious college, with it being obvious our government was footing the bill for their tuition.

Yet even 18 months later, he was still concerned about the White Supremacists hiding under our beds, and behind the local convenience stores. Even as the Marxists are rioting, and carrying flame throwers with them the way anti-Vietnam protesters once carried signs.

I guess for some people, no matter what, there just is no being “woke.”

Maybe. I know there’s been a lot of divisions and rancor on the right in the past 5-10 years. But I think the distinction you made (we don’t shut them down or get them fired) is huge. Mockery and dismissal is waaaay different from making it impossible for a fellow citizen to go about his day and his work.

It seems, thanks to the attention that Weinstein got from folks like Rod Dreher, that Weinstein’s account has been restored. Facebook is, of course, blaming computer error in saying that Weinstein’s account was mistakenly flagged as an imposter account. But it took a massive amount of embarrassing national attention to get this done, which required an actual human being to review the matter – Facebook’s prior faulty “review” of the initial appeal was of course also automated.

Honestly, this reads like the subtitles of the opening credits of The Holy Grail.

The bizarre assertions that humans have already reviewed and confirmed and that there will be no explanation or appeal is just too common in the industry. It’s like they have a script.

This is a post from author/former naval aviator CW Lemoine about getting demonetized by YouTube.

    https://youtu.be/AiS9LD_QIH8

One characteristic aspect of YouTube’s behavior is lying to Lemoine about it, as Facebook did with Brett Weinstein.

Long story short. Lemoine initially pushed back and was told that there was profanity “throughout” his video (a mock dogfight between US and French pilots) and verified by alleged manual reviews. You might be thinking that the French pilot swore. No. Just a Youtube lie.

Lemoine pushed back further and was merely given a timestamp of one alleged example of profanity. There, his guest mentioned the great test pilot “Chuck Yeager”. Auto caption could not figure out “Yeager” and put in a blank space: “chuck [___]”. No “throughout”.

How does this happen? They can’t be demonetizing all videos where auto-caption can’t get a word right. They must be reserving this treatment for people who have low PRC social credit scores or the like
