Trump and Asian Americans

William Huang, a prolific demographic researcher who was raised under China’s one-child policy published an article tracking how Trump is doing in the 2020 campaign with Asians versus his 2016 campaign. Some highlights:

When a blind Chinese activist named Chen Guangcheng spoke at the Republican National Convention praising Trump for standing up to the Beijing regime in August, many Democrats called him ungrateful, as the Chinese lawyer and pro-life activist who exposed the evils of the one-child policy implemented in his hometown of Linyi was rescued from China and found refuge in America during the Obama administration.

Blue check accounts on Twitter were also bewildered about why any Chinese person, or Asian person would still support Trump in 2020 when he is an “anti-Asian racist” who made up nicknames for the virus like the “kung flu” and “China virus”. Surely, they believed in their detached-from-reality universe, those mean nicknames would seal the deal and make Trump lose every single Asian voter.

Trump cannot possibly be gaining among Asians especially after what he has been saying during the pandemic, right? Many Asian Americans, particularly Chinese Americans, are said to be greatly turned off by Trump doubling down on attacks against China, accusing him of anti-Asian xenophobia and scapegoating them in a pandemic which they did not cause. Surely, Biden is in position to run away with the Asian American vote, right?

Wrong.

What mainstream media and Twitter activists do not understand is that, when Trump tweets out “China virus” or shouts “China must pay a price for what it has done” at his campaign rallies, these comments are not anti-Asian. In fact, many, many Asians love it. They relish it when Trump attacks China. Not only are his “anti-Asian” comments making him more popular among traditional Asian demographics that lean red, he is also gaining from other Asian American groups with his blunt rhetoric and action towards Communist China.

See, Asians are not some unified bloc which acts all indignant when Trump attacks China. Many Asians do not see that as an attack on them, but instead as an attack for them. Anti-Communist and anti-Chinese sentiment run deep in many Asian communities, with the beef often going back centuries between Asian countries. Assuming Asians are united is as naïve as thinking Brits and Russians will agree on anything just because they are all “white people”.

Trump has gone from a 79%-18% deficit in 2016, to a 55%-30% deficit in 2020. Don’t tell the Biden campaign, but Trump’s anti-CCP stance since banning travel to and from China in January has helped him in an Asian community that includes staunch anti-Communists who came to this country to escape the ravages of Marxist regimes. Democrats touting Xi as a Biden supporter have been doing Trump a favor in this area, as well.

If we dig even deeper and break the vote down into ethnic communities, we will find a lot more astonishing gains for Trump. He is now winning the Vietnamese vote comfortably at 48% Trump-36% Biden, making them the most pro-Trump Asian bloc in America, completely reversing his performance in 2016. He has more than tripled his Indian American support, with him now on course to getting 28% of their votes instead of the 8% in 2016. And despite everything from banning TikTok and WeChat to tweeting about punishing China for the pandemic, he has only lost a few percentage points of Chinese American support, with 20% intending to vote for him this year compared to the 24% that voted for him in 2016.

In the PRC they know who Xi endorses:

Perhaps the most telling sign of who Beijing actually favors is this recent one: when the Vice-Presidential Debate took place a few days ago, the CNN signal in Beijing showed Kamala Harris when she talked, but when Mike Pence began speaking, the signal was immediately cut in true CCP-style censorship.

China is perhaps the best “get out the vote” machine for Trump. Every time Trump attacks China, he actually gets more Asian American votes, not less. Also remember that 15% of Asian voters remain undecided. If half of them go Trump’s way on Election Day, he might win 40% of the 2020 Asian American vote, double the votes he got in 2016. They are the fastest voting group in America and can play a significant role in many battleground states. Immigrants who fled socialism in their home countries may well become part of the bastion protecting America from falling to the left itself.

Democrats seem to be counting on some sort of dual loyalty of Chinese voters to help them against Trump by openly pushing — at least until six days ago when Hunter’s laptop became a matter of discussion — the fact that the Xi regime would prefer a Biden presidency in 2021. It’s also sort of hard to see Chinese ex-pats from Hong Kong being all that thrilled over the idea that Xi loves Joe the best, or that lots of the major corporations like Disney and Apple, or high-profile pop-cultureites like LeBron and the others in the NBA would have no problem with a Biden Administration looking the other way as Hong Kong’s remaining freedoms are totally crushed, as long as they had a chance to make big profits from the mainland (and this would also be true for any invasion of Taiwan by the Xi regime).

The mainlanders outnumber the Hong Kongese in this country, in round numbers the total Asian immigrant population in the US was 12 million in 2015. All of the numbers I found presented “China” as a bloc, incorporating the PRC, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, so it is hard to get a feel for the ratios. But that’s a red herring, at the Biden logic level, Trumps China tension is racism and so everyone who is not a white supremacist should be supporting Biden to end racism.

I totally agree that corporate America is beyond morally bankrupt, and Biden is their candidate. Just attend one of those Anti-Racism reeducation exercises they are putting their employees through.

Owning the media has made the Democrats very, very sloppy. They have gotten away with a ton. Phantom riots, for crying out loud. They thought they could pretend them away, gaslight the world in the age of mobile phones and Internet.

If the Democrat numbers crunchers have a general idea of the mainland/Hong Kong/Taiwan break-outs and if they make any distinction at all between the three, they probably consider the latter pair too numerically trivial to deal with, in the same way they felt in 2016 that Flyover Country outside of a few select areas no longer had to be worried about, because they had such domination of the bi-coastal parts of the U.S. that they owned the White House forever. That likely also factored into why Disney. its ESPN subsidiary and the NBA were caught off-guard by the Hong Kong protests last year — if they didn’t care about freedom there being crushed, when there were billions on the mainland to be had, while should anyone else?

(As for owning the media making Democrats very, very sloppy, you can look at the Hunter Biden laptop, and how the tech giants and networks trying to go full Xi on The New York Post has backfired so far, because while they control most of the media, they still aren’t in control of all of it.)

It is no coincidence that the NBA, and other pro sports cartels, that shut down Hong Kong sympathizers to please Xi are now pushing BLM on the American people. Burn it all down and start over with American companies that respect free speech and the Constitution.

One of the ironies last fall was that even the far left was mad at the NBA for their situational wokeness — they were perfectly fine with with anti-U.S. statements and no doubt are good with the league’s BLM symbolism during the Bubble playoffs in Orlando. But they were irked at learning the players and coaches weren’t totally down with the struggle against capitalism, because in their minds, the Chinese regime’s flaws are it’s not communist enough. The billion-dollar deals between Xi’s people and the NBA was what really set them off.

(It also led to the cratering of the NBA’s ratings last fall, well before anyone had heard of COVID or any shutdowns, to the point the league was talking about shortening their season starting in 2020-21 to begin at the end of December. The ratings kept falling through the playoffs, and COVID will keep the season from starting at its normal time anyway, but it will be interesting to see if the numbers bounce back come playoff time next spring and/or if the NBA even cares, since they’ve apparently patched things up with the Chinese leadership and got the final game of the playoffs back on state-run TV there. If they think they can make more $$$ in China with their situational wokeness than what they’ll lose in U.S. viewers or in-game attendance, they won’t change what they’ve been doing.)

The NBA needs (apparently) to state the following:

“We are in the business of exhibiting basketball games and authorizing merchandise. There are no political, philosophical, or religious positions to which we as an organization adhere, and any such positions, express or implied, by our employees, associates, or adjuncts are theirs and theirs alone. Wanna buy a jersey?”

Then they should delete their Twitter accounts.

I think in large part it comes from mainly settling in urban areas that leaned heavily Democrat, to where if you wanted a say in things, you also had to be a Democrat. The Vietnamese who settled along the Texas Gulf Coast and not in the urban centers lean far more Republican, while you’re now seeing the inner city phenomenon of second- or third-generation children of Asian immigrants going all-in on the Democrats’ identity politics agenda, while trying to sidestep the contradiction that Asian-Americans are treated negative like white people in many areas of educational and economic preferences.

That’s a hard circle to square, but those pols and other activists have basically put their own advancement over the people they supposedly represent, much as the private sector union leaders in a lot of areas have decided to stick with the Democrats over their own union workers, even as the party’s openly said it really doesn’t need the support of the old industrial worker sectors like coal and steel, and doesn’t care if those jobs dry up and die (public sector unions are a completely different story).

Yes, the Vietnamese are different.  I live in NYC.  I’ve been around Asian-Americans.  I can’t speak for all the ethnic groups but Chinese-Americans clearly support the Democrats.  I don’t know about Filipinos and Koreans.  They tend to be more religious Christian.  They might vote conservative.  I have not seen breakdowns by ethnicity.  But my experience is that Chinese-Americans are solidly Democrats.

Democrats will bend themselves into pretzels to make the narrative fit their hatred of Trump: Trump hates China which means he hates all Asians. Makes sense to me. Sigh.

Asian American immigrants are usually Republican.  Their ‘spoiled rotten’ children drink the kool-aid and vote Democrat or Bernie.

For the purposes of winning presidential, senatorial, and gubernatorial elections, I’m not sure that lots of Asian-Americans live in a lot of swing states.

The states with the highest percentage of Asian-Americans are Hawaii, California, Washington, Nevada, New Jersey, and New York.  About 55% live in those six states.  I guess Nevada is a swing state, but the rest are tough.  Illinois also has a lot of Asian-Americans, but that state is tough too.

Georgia has more Asian-Americans than most states, but they didn’t elect their first Asian-American woman (to a small city council, city population ~6,500) until around 2013.

Only once in my life, 30 years ago, did I ever hear anyone describe herself as Asian: she was from Syria or Iraq or someplace; light skinned, dark hair, and most recently from London, speaking fluent English with a diffuse nondescript accent.  Now, Asian is considered an ethnicity or even a race, and has been for a decade or so.  I even read, a few years ago, someone who was violently attacked describe his attacker to the police simply as Asian, and I didn’t know what to make of this description, other than that it was as innocuous and as non-identifying as possible.

Nowadays, when I hear someone is described as Asian, I always wonder, Does this mean a blonde-haired blue-eyed Russian?  Or a dark-skinned brown-eyed Indian?  Or a white skinned black-haired Chinese?  And how are the police supposed to put out a BOLO on an Asian: Be on the look out for a man, mid-twenties, either blonde-haired blue eyes, or dark-skinned with brown eyes, or white-skinned with brown eyes and epicanthic eye folds, wearing a dark jacket and jeans, leaving the vicinity of 23rd and Cross streets.

How is Asian a personal descriptor of anyone?

(And now, racially speaking, “Asian” is joined with “/Pacific Islander”, which further diffuses and nullifies any specific meaning that would be given to the term.)

I thought these were grouped by more or less genetic mapping and region.

Russia never seemed asian to me because it is isolated from the rest of Asia. They are their own region on a continent.

Same with India. They are largely their own region. The Middle East and Mediterranean is also their own regions.

Lumping them all as asians is just more of this pretense that genetic differences don’t exist in people groups and can’t be adequately separated. I think some great scholarship has been done tracing human migration and its largely done by genetic differentiation caused by regional isolation.

The Horde (yes, that Horde) was a common feature of proto-Russian existence, with constant raids and pillaging and looting and taking of slaves. The Viking roots of the Rus served them well in competing with the Han militarily, and their cities slowly grew stronger under the continual onslaught. So, yeah, she is likely as Russian as anyone else.

A very small part of Russia is in Europe.  Maybe the most densely populated part, but by land area it’s in Asia.  If the Chinese are Asian then the whole Russia/China border is in Asia.  Russia is also multi-ethnic.

Where is Nikki Haley’s parents from?

I believe they are from India.

Ah! That’s Asia, then. I always think of Asians as being Russian or Chinese.

Ha! I think of Asians as Chinese or Japanese or the countries nearby. When people say Asian I think of East Asians.

I used to, but now it means more than just that. The Middle East really is Asian.

Asia is a land mass though, not a genetic pool.

I do think that Asians are one of the big five racial categories of homo sapiens.
