H. R. McMaster: The Policy “Battlegrounds” He Has Won, Lost, And Continues To Fight
Lt. Gen. H. R. McMaster, US Army, ret., the former national security advisor and the Fouad and Michelle Ajami Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution discusses his latest book, Battlegrounds: The Fight to Defend the Free World, a re-examination of the most critical foreign policy and national security challenges that face the United States, and an urgent call to compete to preserve America’s standing and security. McMaster takes us through a world tour of hot spots and outlines the threats to our security, freedom, and prosperity, including nuclear proliferation and jihadist terrorism. McMaster also discusses his upbringing, his career as a soldier and an officer, and his new life as a policy expert at the Hoover Institution.

I appreciated H.R. McMaster’s Dereliction of Duty and his last publication in active service: President Trump’s National Security Strategy. I respect McMaster for giving his full support and competence to shepherding, cat-herding a NSS with which he might not personally have agreed in every particular. That is the mark of an excellent staff leader, understanding that his duty is to his commander.
Another engaging and enlightening conversation. I very much appreciate the Lt. Gen. avoiding the White House intrigue-style book that seems so fashionable for those of post-Trump Administration positions. It adds a level of seriousness and credibility that these times require. I especially think it’s profound Lieutenant General McMaster’s statement about foreign (nefarious) actors exploiting American’s divisions to sow discord and mistrust. Our “Peace Through Strength” now comes from a strong, unified nation rather than the overt military strength during Reagan’s Presidency. New times are witness to new obstacles and new tactics in global warfare. It’s heartening to hear we have people in power willing to adapt to such conditions and not conceding America’s power to tyrants and anti-freedom forces.
