Oregon Troopers Leaving Portland

Yes, the siege of the Hatfield Federal Courthouse has lasted for over 70 straight days, leaving only the question, is it because the civil authorities are incompetent or corrupt? From Zachary Stieber in the Epoch Times:

Oregon State Police troopers are leaving Portland despite continued violence in the state’s largest city.

Troopers were helping quell the unrest that has consumed portions of the city since May 28.

Capt. Timothy Fox, a state police spokesman, told The Epoch Times that the decision stemmed from the district attorney overseeing Portland deciding not to pursue some criminal charges.

“The Oregon State Police is continually reassessing our resources and the needs of our partner agencies and, at this time, we are inclined to move those resources back to counties where prosecution of criminal conduct is still a priority,” Fox said in an emailed statement late Thursday.

The state police had also fulfilled their commitment to a two week stint that ended on Aug. 12, he added.

“Troopers are returning to the communities that they are assigned to serve and protect. We will continually assess our resources if our partners at PPB need OSP assistance,” he said.

The violence has not subsided, as Steiber previously reported in the Epoch Times the DA is not pursuing charges because:

Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt claimed the unusual move would lead to a safer community.

Speaking at a press conference, Schmidt said he acknowledges the emotions of those involved in nightly demonstrations, many of which have turned violent.

“These demonstrations are being used to righteously express grief, anger, and frustration over that senseless act of violence, and the countless other abuses people of color have endured throughout history at the hands of the legal system,” he told reporters.

Schmidt said he wants to be responsive to demands from the demonstrators and the new policy on handling protest-related cases is just the start.

Escape in the third degree, harassment, and riot will also not be prosecuted under the policy.

County DA Schmidt may soon be tutored by US AG Barr if not the National Guard. In the meantime we have these little reminders that elections matter. Isn’t there another Blue DA in the news with creative approaches to law enforcement?

Incompetent or corrupt?

Sisyphus: “These demonstrations are being used to righteously express grief, anger, and frustration over that senseless act of violence, and the countless other abuses people of color have endured throughout history at the hands of the legal system,” he told reporters.

The District Attorney went on to explain that:

The demonstrations will result in more senseless acts of violence and other abuses, which will launch counter demonstrations to righteously express grief, anger, and frustration, and those counter demonstrations will result in more senseless acts of violence, leading to counter counter demonstrations.  With any luck, we’ll be able to sell tickets, creating a completely new form of reality entertainment and a sustainable revenue source for the city.  We’re all very excited about the long-term jobs that will be created.  The Mayor is certain that this idea will catch fire.

    Or he should have.

Move the Federal Courthouse?!? How is that done? You can’t pick it up and carry it somewhere else. It’s probably a $200 million building. The suggestion of just walking away and leaving it to be destroyed is unfathomable to me. And, yes, it would be surrendering, and thus, encouraging more of the same mayhem and chaos. The Oregan State police are leaving, according to this article, because the city prosecutor refuses to charge the violators. The State Cops said under these circumstances there is nothing they can do to help. The Feds, however, have their own prosecutors.

I think we really mean move the federal court, not the courthouse, and if their destruction makes it unusable.

The Hatfield Courthouse is now an icon of Trump’s unflinching dedication to the rule of law and of Mayor Wheeler’s flaccid and even submittal to the Insurrection. This show won’t close until after the election unless Wheeler closes it. The feds aren’t restricted the way the Portland and Oregon LEOs are, and they can out man and out last the Insurrection.

Agree, and I wouldn’t take any action to relocate until after the election. The optics might play well in Oregon, but not in red states.

At what point can the feds simply state that Portland is in a state of insurrection? Can the mayor or the DA be prosecuted for neglect of duty?

Barr has mentioned possible civil rights charges against delinquent office holders. I have no idea how that would play out but Andrew McCarthy or John Woo might have an idea or two.

Pile up enough federal charges (with the DOJ’s unlimited budget) and then you don’t have to worry about getting convictions. The process by itself will bankrupt said delinquent office holders.

Sounds unfair?  Yep. Just ask General Flynn. Or Carter Paige.

Always remember, if there is a Democrat or a RINO, a Mitt Romney or an easily-rolled Jeff Sessions, anywhere in the decision loop, all charges will be dropped.

You hear that, citizens of Portland?  Your DA is not backing up law enforcement.  If you can’t buy a gun, move . . .

Could the feds not send a 200 million dollar bill to Portland for destruction of federal property?

Heck, I could send a bill…and have about the same chance of collecting!

It is clear that the elected officials in Portland will not prosecute the criminals who have already injured federal officers so it is not reasonable to put federal agents or troops in a Fort Apache situation and ask them to take such personal risks.

The federal government has many of the protesters in custody and is bringing charges. From assaulting a federal officer to attempting the destruction of a federal building, there is no problem finding and bringing federal charges for the siege of Hatfield. But that does not solve the broader problem of residents and businesses impacted by the rioting.

They need to cut their losses and leave. Problem solved.

I dislike the idea of leaving without many of the empty heads getting cracked open this looks as though they have “won”, and they did!

At a minimum, any costs associated with damage to Federal Property, injuries to Federal LEO, labor costs should be deducted from ANY transfers that go to that miserable city: grants for anything-energy, education, environment, law enforcement, transportation.

“There have been a total of 63 shootings so far this month compared to 28 in July 2019, according to the Police Bureau.”

These are not shootings involving police officers in Portland. This is no accident. The governor, Multnomah County Commissioners, and Portland City government are all totally incompetent. The last bastion of sanity in Multnomah County, and Portland are two law enforcement agencies. There is no sanity in the state capitol.

The Portland Police Bureau is under staffed, and not appreciated by city, or county leaders. This should come as a big warning to businesses in Portland. You are no more than a cash cow to a city that has no desire to protect you. Property owners should pay attention. You are going to be taxed out of your homes in Multnomah County to make up the budget deficits that are on the way to pay for government stupidity, and the destruction of the last months. Stupidity is expensive.

Obviously, the answer is corruption. Otherwise they would have condemned the destruction, vandalism, intimidation, and other evils from the beginning.

It’s a federal building with federal officers. Local politics don’t explain why federal officers have been ordered not to shoot people who are trying to kill them, to blind them, to burn them alive. Responding to violent insurgents with restraint has allowed the insurgency to grow.

The groups behind these riots around the country have received millions of dollars in funding through public “charitable” contributions promoted by major corporations and Democrats. There are dangers beyond the immediate. But even just the immediate threats of frozen bottles and firebombs should be enough to elicit a quick and forceful response.
