Marie’s Quilt Flag

After three months of quilting, my wife Marie just finished this quilt of the American flag. We’re going to use it as a wall hanging inside, a flag for special days outside. Marie took two flags, put batting in between, and then quilted a pattern down the 13 stripes and then quilted around the 50 stars. She had to align the two sides perfectly, so she spent a lot of time pinning the two sides together before she could quilt even a small section.

My camera angle makes the flag look much larger than it is. It’s a normal-sized flag, 32” by 56”, a typical size for hanging outside one’s house. Marie is actually eight inches taller than the flag.

Same flag with side lighting to emphasize the quilting.

Good job Marie!  There are lots of effort hours represented in that piece of art. I’m thinking it also holds a lot of love.  Hope your hands are holding out:)

That top photo is an amazing optical illusion, isn’t it?  Marie is actually 8 inches taller than the flag. It was complete happenstance.  I didn’t even notice how odd it looked when I took the photo.

In fact, I want that one. The original “Marie” flag. How much?

Philo, Marie rarely makes quilt hangings  for sale.  She makes them for certain places in the house. Thanks for your implied compliment, though.  I’ll tell Marie.

Nice quilting pattern and smart idea! And when you do hang it outside, the sturdiness of it should keep it unfurled instead of tangled around the pole.

Does she do the quilting by hand, machine, or long-arm?

I can only imagine! Mrs. Tabby has a hard enough time pinning a regular backing in place.  I assume she used cotton flags, as the common nylon material would be a complete nightmare to keep in place during quilting.

Just don’t hang it outside in Portland.

Wow! has been taken, so I’ll just say “Beautiful”

I may be mistaken, but I am seeing more glimmers of patriotism lately – in spite of all of the flag burners around.

I am seeing more “thin blue line” flags and the other day I saw that in addition to a green line flag.  I had to look that up – it is to honor the military.

We live in farmland which is slowly transitioning.  About 3 miles from my house is an old farm with a large silo and they have put a huge american flag draped down the silo.  It makes me happy every time I see it.

I think people driving by Marie’s quilt would have the same feeling.

I just put up our historic 15 star and 15 stripe flag outside the kitchen door.  The main part of our house was built in 1803 and that was the flag that would have been flown.  It was the flag immortalized by Francis Scott Key in 1814.  Eventually, they decided that adding a stripe for each new state would be a problem and went back to 13 stripes.

Willowspring, I hope you’re right. Wouldn’t it be nice if the effect of the rioting, burning, etc. was a resurgence of love of country and patriotism.

You know, Jim, sadly you are probably right. The anarchists who rise up late each night in Portland would probably burn any American flag in sight.  They hate America.

Tabby, it is cotton. And yes, she had a hard time aligning the two sides.

Absolutely magnificent!  I still get a thrill when I see America’s flag unfurled, and when one is made with love like this one, I get double thrills.

Adding to the chorus of astonishment at Marie’s beautiful needle work in service to honoring our flag.  God bless her!

@willowspring, we are noticing more flags hung in our neighborhood in the last few weeks.  My son has been counting them as we walk/drive around.  The numbers are definitely going up.

I have noticed over the years, and feel free to disagree with me if your observations are different, that the odds of a residential display of our flag are about 90% that the family is Republican.
