Mr. President, Master the Mask War!

President Trump should seize control of the narrative again. Given that the Vice President, who failed to protect the start of the administration by standing with General Flynn, who folded like a cheap suit as governor when corporations threatened his state for opposing the radical anti-Christian corporate agenda, masked by “sexual identity” activism, has failed to provide real leadership to the “coronavirus task force,” President Trump will just have to do it himself. Since masks are now a political statement, turn the narrative against the left.

Contrast the black masks of the left, the black masks of the real fascists, with a custom-fitted, carefully styled white lower-face covering emblazoned with bold blue USA outlined in red. Think Ralph Lauren style here. Unveil the new look the next time President Trump strides out past the press gaggle to Marine One, or with the First Lady on the Fourth of July. Make VP Pence wear one. Have Kayleigh McEnany wear one into the press room, then take it off to address the camera.

The Trump campaign needs to be ready with off-the-shelf models in several sizes. Sell them at cost, including shipping and handling. Get a sea of white masks with USA out in the face of the black masks and odd “face coverings” that mark the left and Democrats. Red is Labour and Blue is Tory. Everyone knows this. Make it the same stark color contrast between populist and conservative Trump supporters and the uniparty establishment.

President Trump should stick it to Mitch McCarthy, errrr, Mitch McConnell and Kevin McCarthy. Send them the off-the-shelf version in a larger size that makes them look even more ridiculously beta as Mitch already does. Sent the same to Liz Cheney, Mittens, and the other Endless Warriors. Master the Mask War, Mr. President!

Cliff, I couldn’t disagree more. It’s never the ‘thing’ it’s always the action. The ‘thing’ is pretext.

Yes, and it would give antifa goons a chance to commit atrocities in masks identified with Trump and “right-wingers”.

I have been saying since that beginning that nobody is exploiting this amazing advertising space of facemasks.  Coke and Ford should have made a billion masks and passed them out.  I don’t need anymore of those koozies!

I will say that Trump has offered free USA mask to folks that donate $20+.   He needs to be passing them out at rallies and any place that people gather and not just to donors.

That said, the science on masks is fuzzy and we are moving to herd immunity and we need to stop wearing masks.    Masks should be worn for personal protection only during the summer.

First, the whole mask thing is bogus. It’s complete hogwash.

Second, most people don’t want to wear their politics on their sleeves or on their faces. I wouldn’t.

Third, the press would have a field day. It will look like Trump caved. It would look weak.

Again, it’s not the thing that matters. They themselves don’t really believe masks are effective, they just want to make people do things. They don’t actually care about health or the spread of the virus.

They don’t really believe guns (thing) are the problem, they just want to make their enemies turn in their guns.

    Cliff,

You may be on to something. I hadn’t thought of the mask as a fashion statement until, in-line at Publix, a woman was wearing what I thought was a Gucci mask. So I said, “Is that a Gucci mask?”. She laughed and told me it was the bottom half of a bikini.

    I wasn’t in Kansas anymore.

They can already do that with the hats and shirts. In fact, that’s been true as long as there have been campaign buttons, or any other branded clothing or bits of flair.

I doubt we’d get the crap beat out of us. Most Trump supporters, in my neck of the woods anyway, wear the masks for the least amount of time possible.

So we are fully oxygenated. However, the rest of America, that seems to think they need to keep the mask on even while driving in their car, is so low on oxygenation that in any real  fight they’d last half a second or less.

The anti-mask crusade is clueless, at best. The data, while far from perfect, supports it. We are seeing a spike in cases of infection as we reopen-we desperately need to reopen yet avoid a 2nd wave-the appropriate use of masks & social distancing is by far our best bet.   We are seeing the effects of our dysfunctional tribal politics. Wear a mask, hope for a vaccine or get Joe Biden.

So I take it the OP is pro-mask and wants to start a war of the masks.

I’ll just show my whole face, and wear a bland surgical mask when I absolutely, absolutely have to.

All the data isn’t in yet, but if the number of deaths don’t significantly increase or even continue to decrease, as the number of infections do rise, then the excuse for slowing or stopping the spread start to disappear.

And the argument that the healthy population shouldn’t hide from getting infected get stronger, so as to burn this out sooner.  A benefit to everyone.

    So why wear masks?

Here in the wacko western part of WA  (west of the Cascades), I wear one only to get into and through the stores to do my shopping without being”Karen-ed”. But as far as efficacy? Forgeddaboudit, as my NY friends might say.

This is the kind of argument that seems to win these days. When you want to impose a particular rule, instead of trying to convince people that your position makes sense, you claim the other side are “antis” that need to make an argument against your rule being applied. Shifting the burden of proof, in other words.

It worked for the advocates of same-sex marriage.

Hard to make it more political than it already is. I make no argument about public health effectiveness, although I suspect, based on the limited literature on home-made cloth nose and mouth coverings, there is a positive marginal effect on slowing the spread.

There is very little time between now and October 3-November 3. That is the effective voting window given all the states with long mail-in ballot windows and voting locations open days or weeks in advance of the election day. I’m all about stopping Biden, Schumer, and Pelosi. I think we should not give up the “we care” visual message conveyed to marginal voters.

Too late for that.  I think Trump (and Pence) has it right in showing an ambilvalence towards wearing masks.

This weekend is going to be a big one with the virus.  People are going to ignore physical distancing rules despite all the restrictions.  Infections will continue to rise.

But will deaths?  If they don’t, then the air will start to go out of the stop/slow the spread movement.  Trump’s ambivalence will then be a plus.

I know it’s a liberal rag but Collins is worth listening to.

It would be nice if Mr Fauci, or self proclaimed health expert Bill Gates could explain how the rushed into production COVID vaccine will have any efficacy and how it will be safe.

The efficacy question is  a major one. It stems from the reality that despite the decades that flu vaccines have been available, they are not effective, and even when the public does go all in on a vaccine for a particular year, there are still 60,000 deaths.

I am equally leery about the idea that “X amounts of tests show a spike in COVID.” I’d like the COVID numbers to be about actual peeople, and not the tests. It is leaking out from medical personnel that when a person tests positive, if theya re in the hospital, they will be tested another two times. This is done ostensibly as a double check on the positive COVID verdict. But staff at major hospitals say that it is the test results that are counted – so when a patient with positive COVID status is tested two or three times, that counts as two or three cases.

Remember the hospitals are getting anywhere from            $ 19,000 per COVID case admitted at their hospital. And some places have been promised up to $ 300,000, if the person ends up intubated and then dies.
