So I talked to @FlaggTaylor about Mr. Jones, the new Agnieszka Holland movie about Gareth Jones, the Welsh journalist who dared to risk his life to reveal the truth about Stalin’s murder of millions of Ukrainians, the Holodomor, only to be faced with systematic lying by liberals in Moscow and Britain, orchestrated by Pulitzer prize winner Walter Duranty, who didn’t want to believe the truth, or publish it. In many ways, liberalism is back to its ’30s form.

Agnieszka Holland was one of the earliest advisors of the American Cinema Foundation’s Andrzej Wajda Prize. At the time she lived in Los Angeles (may still, for all I know) and was one of the few Oscar-level directors of that era who was completely unpretentious. “We could, you know, put (another female director from eastern Europe) on the jury. but she is, you know, lesbian”. She knew we are conservatives. “Perhaps that is a problem for you”. Nope. Gutsy heroine against post-Stalinist repression? That’s what the entry fee is.
I watched this the other day. I thought they did a pretty good job.
I watched Burning Bush and am looking forward to seeing Mr. Jones. By the way, there is a film about the Holodomor. It came out in 2017 and was called Bitter Harvest with Max Irons. I have not seen it yet but have it on my Netflix list for when I’m in the mood for terror, starvation, Stalin, etc.
I missed that one! Seems to have been a financial disaster in America–but streaming might be the second chance it needs–let me know if you like it, if you get around to it.
