There Will Be No Beauty Left

No churches with their glowing stained glass windows, no murals, no paintings of Christ with the children, no depictions of Mary being touched by God—all these will disappear if Shaun King has his way. He told his 1.1 million followers that all images of a white Jesus and his ‘European’ mother should be destroyed. White Jesus is a symbol of ‘white supremacy,’ and has been used over the centuries to oppress anyone not white.

How many of his followers will take his pronouncement and follow through with destroying churches, statues of Jesus and Mary, paintings, etc.? Should armed guards be stationed 24/7 to protect “The Last Supper?” What about the statue of Mary and Jesus, “The Pieta?” Wasn’t there an attempt years ago to damage that? How many paintings and murals with a white Jesus also show people of other races? In many of those, Jesus is seated among the people. Would an oppressor feel comfortable enough to sit with those he is supposedly oppressing?

Full disclosure — I do not go to church, the last time I was in a church was for my mother’s funeral in 2013. However, I would feel the loss keenly if I see churches being smashed on TV, whatever the denomination. Just being outside, in the sun, rain, wind, whatever, is a reminder to me that man needs more than himself for fulfillment. Does that sound corny? I’ve never tried to express these feelings in print before, so probably not doing it very well.

I just know those destroying statues and monuments will never be able to produce such beauty; beauty that people want to stop and stare at for hours. Beauty that people will travel miles and miles to be able to gaze upon. Beauty created by man, with talent and skill from God, that has inspired countless millions.

“Normies?” Please grow up already and learn to speak to people. We could use all the intelligent help we can get. This kind of stuff doesn’t help anything.

If you were expecting this current state of affairs (the basic form, not necessarily the timing) as a result of Republican fecklessness and the general credulity by the public-at-large, then you are not a normie but rather a ‘whacko bird’. While not always appropriate for every venue, memes such as this serve as much of a purpose as Thomas Nast cartoons.

Not really. There’s a big difference between caricaturing public officials and govt. or social institutions, vs. insulting and demeaning the very people you are supposedly trying to win over to your side. Stuff like this is obviously just red meat for those already on your side, preaching to the choir. And it does nothing to further your cause.

That’s not how memes work on the internet-like I said, it isn’t always useful or appropriate, but it is situationally effective, especially among the younger generations.

FWIW, my Black liberal preacher friends are not at all amused with Mr King’s proposal.

This was posted in another thread.

One of them wrote something like, “You wanna tear White Jesus but not the Baphomets? I see what you’re doing.”

Had to look that up and laughed.

What is crazy-making is that regardless of the ‘look’ of Jesus who was a Semite by genepool, the meaning of Jesus is aracial. I get why European artists painted Jesuses who looked like them – their grasp of science, history and geography was poor to begin with and afterwards they simply recycled the assumptions that came before them. Slightly less understandable is black – vs Semitic – Jesuses, but still, the point of Jesus is that people are called to be like him and having as a referent a picture of someone who doesn’t look like you might make that slightly harder to convey or take to heart.

People being what they are – fallen – it comes as no surprise that we might mock each other’s Jesuses for inauthenticity.

But there’s no way to square that with calls for their destruction; that’s racism, pure and simple.

That’s the puzzling part. People raised by loving parents, with structure and responsibilities, but also a wide social circle, full of activities and fun, not struggling against much of anything, subscribing to this violent movement sweeping the country. Don’t they realize they’re trying to destroy the system that got them the advantages of their childhood? They are trying to destroy anything, everything good, which would include their parents. If that isn’t insane, I don’t know what is!

I imagine that they learned how much they were victims while in college.

Recitation is partway to belief and there are many kinds of loyalty oaths being proffered.

The only ‘loyalty oaths’ being accepted should be these—“Our Father, who art in heaven…”, followed by, “I pledge allegiance to the flag…..”!!!! ‘Nuff said……
