There Will Be No Beauty Left

No churches with their glowing stained glass windows, no murals, no paintings of Christ with the children, no depictions of Mary being touched by God—all these will disappear if Shaun King has his way. He told his 1.1 million followers that all images of a white Jesus and his ‘European’ mother should be destroyed. White Jesus is a symbol of ‘white supremacy,’ and has been used over the centuries to oppress anyone not white.

How many of his followers will take his pronouncement and follow through with destroying churches, statues of Jesus and Mary, paintings, etc.? Should armed guards be stationed 24/7 to protect “The Last Supper?” What about the statue of Mary and Jesus, “The Pieta?” Wasn’t there an attempt years ago to damage that? How many paintings and murals with a white Jesus also show people of other races? In many of those, Jesus is seated among the people. Would an oppressor feel comfortable enough to sit with those he is supposedly oppressing?

Full disclosure — I do not go to church, the last time I was in a church was for my mother’s funeral in 2013. However, I would feel the loss keenly if I see churches being smashed on TV, whatever the denomination. Just being outside, in the sun, rain, wind, whatever, is a reminder to me that man needs more than himself for fulfillment. Does that sound corny? I’ve never tried to express these feelings in print before, so probably not doing it very well.

I just know those destroying statues and monuments will never be able to produce such beauty; beauty that people want to stop and stare at for hours. Beauty that people will travel miles and miles to be able to gaze upon. Beauty created by man, with talent and skill from God, that has inspired countless millions.

It’s not at all comforting, but once one recognizes that this is about Western Civ., it all fits together.

Are you saying ‘Western Civilization’ inevitably destroys all that is good and beautiful? Eastern ‘civilization’ seems to do a thorough job of that, looking at followers of Islam. Or am I missing something here?

Of course I’m not saying that.  I’m saying that Shaun King and his followers have a much larger agenda than focusing on black lives.

Yes, I agree that it really isn’t about Jesus, or Christianity, or even racial disparity. As Hoy says, it’s about attacking Western Civilization itself.

But it isn’t really even about that. It’s about attacking the status quo, which just happens to be Western Civilization for these foolish nihilists. The worst of them simply want to tear down those things that are already established, and, since they grew up in our culture, our culture is the thing that offends them.

If that weren’t true, it would be hard to understand why they want to attack the most humane, just, and equitable civilization in human history. But it isn’t about building anything, not really. That’s just talk, to justify the destruction. Whatever their motive, they don’t like things that most of us consider beautiful: clean walls, public order, stained glass windows in quiet churches, gentle speech, peace.

I don’t think there are very many of these people, but they’re a bad influence on the goofballs and restless children around them.

Meanwhile, the surrender cons still think they can placate the anti-American mob by using the South and our culture as their whipping boy.  It didn’t take long for them to go after the ultimate targets.

The worst part is that none of this except the timing is shocking to anyone who was paying even the slightest amount of attention, and not willfully ignoring the evidence before their eyes.

Hank, I disagree with you about this one.  I think that Jesus is the wellspring of everything that is good about what we now call Western Civilization, which as recently as Churchill’s great speech in WWII could still be called Christian Civilization.

I think that even if you are not a believer, you should be able to recognize the Christian underpinnings of our culture.  Douglas Murray is a good example of this, calling himself a “Christian atheist.”

I don’t know anything about this Shaun King fellow.  His focus on “white Jesus” seems to suggest an association with Black Liberation Theology, but maybe he just hates all things white.

Yes, I understand now. King is wanting all facets of our society destroyed. He’s picking the ones for destruction in a calculated way, to demoralize those who would oppose him and his ilk.

One of them wrote something like, “You wanna tear White Jesus but not the Baphomets? I see what you’re doing.”

Had to look that up and laughed.

Protect all statues and monuments.  To paraphrase Reverend Niemoller, “First they came for the Confederate statues, but I did nothing because I wasn’t a Southerner . . .”

No, he’s saying that this is the apex of a 50 year assault on the idea of western culture from the postmodern left.  These are not people that want to improve lives through the equal application of western principles.  They want to destroy the very underpinnings of the western idea: personal freedoms, individualism, and responsibility.

Pretty sure there are still plenty of statues, flags and buildings that will be destroyed first.  Churches are safe for the time being. And like NASCAR proved recently there are still a lot of places where white people can virtue signal that BLM. Even if the “noose” was just a rope used over a year ago as a door pull.

I realized that earlier in the thread. I do wonder—at what point does sane America stand up and say, “That’s enough!”? The President’s church was attacked again, CEOs of many corporations are groveling before these thugs, and the ‘noose’ in that black Nascar driver’s garage was the pull rope for the overhead door! It has been said this current situation actually started 100+ years with the man who gave us the Dewey decimal system. It’s been downhill since then.

Churches are safe for the time being? The church at Lafayette Square across from the White House has been attacked again. I have a feeling there will be other churches vandalized soon enough. It seems to be part of the effort to keep ‘us’ off balance, not knowing what to expect next. Here’s a thought—how many church windows had black craftsmen design and make them? Just wondering….

If you were expecting this current state of affairs (the basic form, not necessarily the timing) as a result of Republican fecklessness and the general credulity by the public-at-large, then you are not a normie but rather a ‘whacko bird’.  While not always appropriate for every venue, memes such as this serve as much of a purpose as Thomas Nast cartoons.

I was dismayed the other day to stumble into the Facebook page of a young college woman of mixed race who grew up in our church, never was discriminated against by her extended family or anyone in the church, went to college easily, had a middle class upbringing that her black father obviously could support from his job, etc. Yet the page was reeking of “Black Lives Matter.” I think there is just a major part of the human race that wants to herd-follow and feel virtuous, so it is a potent thing to have a mass movement claming righeousness that they can instantly tack themselves to without peeking behind the curtain. It’s hard to figure out how to combat this no matter how many counter-facts are offered about police being mostly responsible, etc. Add to it the nudging by national enemies through social media and the lack of historic perspective.

There are even theories now (watch the Democrats projecting China collusion onto Trump for a distraction) that the Chinese and DNC actually want a lot of economic damage, even if it costs American lives, for different but dovetailed purposes (trade issues and the election).

I don’t know if China and DNC concocted the virus but they sure are trying to ride it, although there is no logic to blame Trump for it. One perhaps better theory I heard is that we are borrowing again in massive amounts (a democrat push that I can certainly believe) . While it is unpopular to oppose more debt in a “crisis,” it could eventually hurt our standing as the world’s reserve currency. And China has always resented that status and has wanted their renobi or whatever they call their currency to take the place of the dollar.

Not really. There’s a big difference between caricaturing public officials and govt. or social institutions, vs. insulting and demeaning the very people you are supposedly trying to win over to your side. Stuff like this is obviously just red meat for those already on your side, preaching to the choir. And it does nothing to further your cause.

That’s the puzzling part. People raised by loving parents, with structure and responsibilities, but also a wide social circle, full of activities and fun, not struggling against much of anything, subscribing to this violent movement sweeping the country. Don’t they realize they’re trying to destroy the system that got them the advantages of their childhood? They are trying to destroy anything, everything good, which would include their parents. If that isn’t insane, I don’t know what is!

We have a culture that idolizes “teachers,” and teachers have a huge influence on the minds of young people growing up. And that idolization only gets  stronger at the university. A charismatic professor with a strong leftist bent and a desire to indoctrinate can erase years of upbringing.

I think the original comment begs the question, in that I’m not at all sure that these kids were raised “with structure and responsibilities.” My six kids were raised on a farm. None of them wants to live on a farm now, and I don’t blame them, but all of them are capable, responsible adults. But farms are nice that way, because they’re just full of opportunities to do unpleasant things because you have to. That builds character. It’s harder for the kids who grow up in the suburbs, or in the city. There aren’t as many opportunities, especially for young kids, to do unpleasant things.

If you’ve got only one or two siblings, and if the schoolyard is a hyper-regulated anti-bullying zone where cooperation is the theme rather than the free-for-all of competitive, sometimes abrasive play, then you probably don’t have a lot of practice with minor conflict resolution. (“Daddy, where do snowflakes come from?” “They come from overly coddled childhoods, my dear.”)

I’m not saying that we have a generation or two of lazy, socially inept, marginally competent, spoiled, self-indulgent, instant-gratification-seeking young people.

    Ahem.
