Tomorrow is Fathers’ Day. Fathers are pretty well despised in today’s popular culture. Probably for the reason given in this quote. A father does things he does not like to do to protect his family.
Yes, that may mean fighting to defend them. But it means more than that. It means going to a job you despise – with a smile on your face – to provide the wherewithal to give them the food and shelter they need. It means setting an example for your children to follow, when you would rather be following your own interests. It means putting aside immediate pleasures for the long-term benefit of your family. It means scaring off the unworthy boys chasing after your daughters, but forcing yourself to step aside when someone worthy of your daughters comes along. It means disciplining your sons when they do something egregiously stupid – even, or perhaps especially, though it was the same egregiously stupid thing you did at their age.
None of this is fun. (Okay, maybe chasing off unworthy boyfriends is.) But it is necessary to provide for your family and ensure your children grow up to be functioning adults. (Producing functioning adults is the real mission of a father.) And perhaps that gives a clue as to why popular culture holds fathers in such low esteem. Modern popular culture is about fun first and foremost, not about providing for others or preparing for the future. Responsible fathers are a rebuke to popular culture, so they have to be destroyed.
Fatherhood is about accepting the responsibilities of being an adult and passing on those values. If you do a good job, the reward is worth the aggravation.

With the great modern upheaval going on as we speak, what are the odds that this is the last Father`s Day?
It’s all in how you do it.
I think that a lot of what has happened to produce what we have today is that too many parents wanted to be friends with their children, rather than civilizing influences. And civilizing children can also take a lot of actions that a man doesn’t want to do and doesn’t like to do, but that need to be done.

I had no problem being friends with my kids, but there was no doubt that they’d be disciplined if they stepped out of line. The two aren’t mutually exclusive.
When your children are adults, you can be friends with them. That doesn’t mean that, prior to adulthood, you have to be unfriendly. Or that you can’t play, or enjoy yourselves together doing mutually interesting or entertaining things.
The big difference between my child and my friend is that my child tells me his/her troubles, and I don’t reciprocate. I don’t come home from work, and weep on my ten-year-old’s shoulder about the mean thing my boss said to me. I am responsible for my child, my child must be held responsible to me.

My two sons are fathers and my grand daughter will be celebrating Father’s Day with her father.
I think much of the current hysteria will peak November 3 and, while there will be crying and gnashing of teeth, things will settle down. There is planning behind most of this. Not by the BLM types who are looting. They are foot soldiers. Barr’s DOJ is quietly scooping up lots of the white kids who were acting as field staff, You will start to see complaints about DOJ drones watching the riots as the organizers realize the game is being watched.
They wanted a Kent State but that will not be given to them.
I’m betting that the fathers here on Ricochet are some of the world’s best fathers. And they have some of the world’s best children. Happy Father’s Day to all the Ricochet Fathers.
