Recommended by Ricochet Members Created with Sketch. “We Are Leaving,” Says Police Officer

I’ve been puzzled that while the media, corporate America, and others are hyper-focusing on the relationship between law enforcement and the Black community across much of the US, it’s all been mostly one-side; focused only on what many in the black community have experienced and feel. And now, it’s morphed into “defund the police.”

The stories and “the conversation” are important. But what about the other side – the people who protect and serve our communities?

I’ve worked with law enforcement. As a newspaper editor eons ago, I occasionally would use my day off (Monday, the odd day we didn’t publish) to spend the day traveling with Oklahoma State Highway Patrol troopers I had befriended while covering crimes. After all, in my first job as a rookie reporter for the local newspaper while in college, I was responsible for the “police blotter,” including trudging over to the local police station to collect daily info about deadly car crashes, burglaries, and public drunks (Monday was the best day, after the weekend). I was captivated by the stories of the officers I encountered, which of course provided great fodder for news stories that weren’t off the record. I quickly grew to admire and respect what they were often called upon to do. It’s the toughest business that I know and it takes special people to do it.

One time, I was asked to join on a manhunt for three escaped prisoners. We found one that was left behind by the others. I’ll save that story for the future. They asked me to join them because they knew I would not get sick upon discovering what we would find, and as often happens, the local newspaper would also serve as the official photographer for such scenes.

An op-ed was published in lawofficer.com by a Tulsa police officer whose headline should capture your attention. It is a must-read if you would like a more complete perspective of our “current unpleasantness.”

Blue Lives Matter, too.

Cops are being scapegoated by tyrannical city governments that pass laws against lifestyle choices and then task the police to enforce them as a collection racket. Big city mayors this is all on you!

I have been vigilantly defending cops on social media, including the incident in Buffalo with a 75 yr old man instigator.

But then there appear a few cases where I say “WTF”. Cops in Minneapolis are slashing tires in parking lots, to make sure they don’t become potential 3000# projectiles?!? https://www.npr.org/sections/live-updates-protests-for-racial-justice/2020/06/09/873110812/police-officers-slashed-car-tires-during-minneapolis-protests-police-agencies-sa and then of course there is this case in Florida, where the police opt to beat the crap out of a white guy, just to prove that their abuse isn’t solely based on racism. https://www.actionnewsjax.com/news/local/man-stunned-with-taser-by-jacksonville-beach-police-i-was-just-protecting-myself/593792413/?fbclid=IwAR2UzoLv-oFr_b0QYIV1B7vZhkiAbs9nYqKw4sKePXaV1JIOReYTqvn6-nI

Then of course there is the example of police shooting a wheelchair bound guy in the head with a rubber bullet. https://www.dailymercury.com.au/news/cop-shoots-wheelchair-bound-man-in-face/4031281/ I mean, was this guy really that big of a threat?

I know we can all find examples of exemplary conduct by the police, and abhorrent behavior by the police. It feels these riots, much like the covid-19 issue before, show the true colors of many people. The liberal little despots who abused their power stopping funerals, and seed sales, are the same kind of people who abused their position of trust as law officers during riots. These are the truly dangerous people.

if I was a cop I would have resigned by now. Not sure why they haven’t.
if you think the current cops are bad wait until you see their replacements.

I would bless their choice to walk away, even though that will hurt so many people.

I hope what will happen if they walk away: people with means will hire them as personal guards.

yes, but they will not be police with police powers. They will effectively become well paid thugs as they follow their employers whim.

When all the police walk away, it’s the wild west.

The Left will be begging for Police.

Every day of this insanity my heart becomes harder toward the left, and I find myself wishing them ill.

They are moving to small cities that recognize the need for police. Jack Dunphy, a former LAPD officer who has been writing about police issues for years (under that pseudonym) has mentioned in his latest column that he retired from LAPD and is now working for another city in CA. Several years ago, I read how LAPD is losing officers who serve their probationary period, then move on to a smaller, safer city.

The way we are going they are all going to quit anyway. They will have too for the safety of their families.

The likeliest scenario is for cops to not respond to robbery and theft anymore. This happened in Baltimore where police took a big step back from day to day beat cop stuff. Murder is up of course though.

You have been around long enough that you should know that when The Left says it wants a “conversation” it means nothing of the sort. It has already decided the matter, and so any holders of counter-thoughts are told to “shut up.”

And since the large, Democrat-run cities have spent years relieving the law-abiding citizen of his ability to defend himself, his family, and his property, there is an insufficient collection of residents who might counter the armed obviously not law abiding people who invade.

I wonder if those store owners etc recognize that “defund the police” also removes the mechanism that might have protected them from these extortion threats.

Makes me wish I still had my NHM-91 with heavy chrome-lined “match” barrel and bipod, plus 75-round drum magazine.

can we sponsor a national poll, like the use on the reality shows:

Police strike in your city, yes or no.

Then give the police in the cities with more yes votes a 40 hour Riot Relief.

Honestly, I think there is a majority of people in this country who are opposed to what is going on…

In reality, that might be true. Although I suspect it might be less than we would like. But they won’t admit it because then they would be targeted.
